MY21 Amundsen Map update procedure

Featured Replies

I can only speculate Bry that perhaps it depends on whether or not any of your local roads have been updated.  I know that Customer Services told me that the maps in a car were updated when the maps for that country were updated, but then yours should have been updated as well. And others in this thread have said they are on a different version to me. I don't know how you can check that you are receiving the online updates, but if you are getting the software updates to the shop app etc the basic connection to the servers seems OK.

I'll be driving up your way this weekend... it'll be interesting to see if my maps get updated to v21.5 as well!!

Sure will be interesting to see if they update, but surely  Skoda are not using an update system that depends where you drive in the UK, however it would explain why I'm still on 19.11 though as I have not left my local area since I got the car in March.

I just tried to download ECE 2021/2022 , valid since CW45_2021 using Chrome (Windows 10 computer) and it just wouldn't happen.  It downloaded on Firefox fine.

(Later - I'm politely reminded this thread is for MY21 Amundsens, mine's the 2019 model with SD card maps.  Wake up, FG.)

I'm guessing you've got an older infotainment system (MIB2?) since your signature says you have a 2019 Karoq. Since the MIB3 systems in this thread can't use the Skoda Update Portal, you'll get more help from one of the other update threads.

Apologies, I'd forgottent the thread was about non-SD card Amundsens.

Actually, my post was offering advice, not looking for help!  Rolls eyes, laughs at self.

What I realized is that the map version does not really matter...near to my home location they are building a new highway, it`s not opened yet, but it already appeared on my map? Marked as closed so it`s pretty in sync...I am on 19.11 since November 2020 when I got the car but looks like it`s still updating?

My trip up to Ladybower didn't generate an update to my nav database - it's still at 21.2. But as I haven't spotted any errors in it yet, perhaps we're getting too hung up over the version numbers? Perhaps they become less relevant when the car is only updating part of the database rather than the whole file??

After 7 months of ownership I've nearly done a thousand miles in the car, so it's just about run in! it was nice to make a longer journey at last (50 miles out in the morning and 50 back) and to see an indicated fuel consumption of 36.2 in the morning and 44.2 in the afternoon! Not as bad as I feared the 2.0 TSI 4x4 might be :)

Yeah exactly, I think if Skoda would not show the Nav map version, nobody would really care

Hi.

I have just been chatting to Skoda UK Customer Care (ongoing issues unrelated to the Map Update), but interestingly they said that the maps will only look for an update if you are 60 miles outside where you normally drive. He also said that you should now be able to download the European Maps database and update via the USB C socket. Has anyone actually tried this recently?

Thanks for the update, but that sounds counter-intuitive to me! Why should I get map updates for roads a hundred miles from me, and not the owners actually living there!

And when I enter my VIN (for a MY21 Amundsen system) in the Skoda Update portal it still talks about downloading the ECE 2020/21 file (valid since CW whenever that is) onto a 25GB SD card.

As my navigation database has certainly been updated (according to the changed version numbers), and I haven't been more than 50 miles from my home since covid lockdowns started, I'm not sure that I believe what you've been told - unless anyone else can confirm it??

Chris

Where you live gets updated - it is only when you drive 60 miles away from there that it looks for another update. That is how it was explained. It seems that it is a partial update and not a full country update so they can even push out monthly updates if needed for a specific 'region'.

I was trying to find out how I could get the latest updates for a European country before actually departing.

Ahh.. ok, So that is an update to what I was told months ago, that it looks for an update when you drive to a new country. As my trips to France have been cancelled for the last two years, I haven't needed to worry about updated French maps, but the best of luck if you're still able to get away!

My son was able to visit his second home in France last month, and said Eurotunnel was very quiet, and that he had no problems at the borders either end.

We, too, often go to France. Next trip due in a month!

My preferred navigation method is to use Waze on my phone (which uses google map data) as this gives me realtime traffic info.

I combine this with a zoomed out in car nav screen.

I then get a long range view of major town names, which helps with diversions etc.

Yes, I tried this a few days on both my Kamiq and my wifes Golf MK8. Neither one worked and although as a new Kamiq owner I've been beavering away trying to find out how to update maps (mine still shows 19.11) I wish I'd known about this thread beforehand, it would have saved me going through some of the heartache that you guys have already experienced.

sorry to gatecrash, especially as I haven't anything helpful to say....... but I am sitting here patiently awaiting my new Karoq Edition (end of September??) so am using my time wisely reading the whole of the Karoq forum!! I am really confused by the whole updating of the maps etc... I have had a Fabia 3 for since 2015 and before that a Superb Mk1  and never had to update anything.. Is this new to the Karoq/Skoda? I tend to use Apple Car Play without any problem - is this still going to be the case? Many thanks in advance.

Cars are now virtually computers on wheels, so have a lot of software that needs regular updates. If you had a built-in satnav in your Fabia or Superb, then the maps would get out of date and not show changed or new roads unless you updated it. But if you use the maps on your phone instead, then obviously that would be using its own updated maps instead.

Have fun :)

I may get pilloried for this, but it is just a personal opinion.

Re forums; they can be a good resource of information and often there are things to be learned that you'll struggle to find out a dealer. Some of what you'll read though isn't always fact, it's often just opinions.

Some contributors just copy and paste things they've found on the internet, which again aren't always factual or current.

As with review sites e.g. Amazon, with forums you have to learn to sort the wheat from the chaff. You do get trolls on forums, but I find most people are well meaning but you have to work out if the posts you read are actually relevant to any question you've asked. One of the good things about forums, is that there are many members who are willing and good at doing the research that others find difficult or are too lazy to do themselves.

As for your actual question about reading the whole Karoq forum, I'd treat it like the owners handbook i.e. skim through it to get a feel for how things work and later, when you need to know something specific, look up that particular thing, at least that's what I tend to do.

With regard to map updating, that's always needed doing, but the way that it's done is constantly changing. If you don't update it's not the end of the world, it just means that at some juncture on a journey you might get led up the garden path. As things currently stand, with your new Karoq just register with Skoda Connect when you take delivery and you will automatically receive any updates that are relevant to your car. Map updates are issued twice yearly by Skoda, which is usually June/July and November and if you missed any because you weren't signed up to Skoda Connect, you'll just have to wait until the next one.

There is talk of Skoda letting us go back to the old way of manually updating later this year, but until/if that actually happens it remains unconfirmed.

Now that raises a question that I haven't yet found the answer to. When you registered with Skoda Connect, did you verify your identity with Skoda via your dealer so you can do dopey things like unlock your car from afar !!

I do wonder whether this needs to be done to enjoy all of the Connect benefits, although my dealer principal thinks that just registration should be enough.

Just after I'd reregistered ( I'd already been registered with my previous Kodiaq) with Connect last week, my infotainment screen offered me an update. It was a generic one, not a map update.

Strange you've had nothing at all for a year, have you tried rebooting your infotainment system ?

Was that map updates or just generic updates ? You're obviously registered with Skoda connect, but did you do the full registration verification with your dealer so you get all benefits ?

It's about time Skoda / VW told us what system they use for Navigation Database updates, im the same as olderman1, still on 19.11 after 5 months, there has been one update that it notified me about and as far as I know it did it,  but the system information didn't change...

It seems like Skoda employ the Mushroom syndrome, keep us in the dark and feed us on B.S.
