Mapping Software

Featured Replies

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone knows of any decent mapping software which can be used for importing data, measuring distances, bearings etc. It needs to show details when you click on the imported data. Have tried Autoroute but doesn't have enough detail, and I currently use Infomap professional from some years ago, which has everything but the maps are too old and their are no updates.

Cheers

The ESRI stuff is pretty good, but you need the tiles from OS mastermap for it to work really well.

For home use I use the Memory Map stuff. Works pretty well and is available in a variety of scales (25k is the best it gets however). Allows aerial photography overlays too and has the capability to do 3D mapping. Allows fly throughs of routes too :D

I use mappoint... its the more "business" orientated ver of autoroute.. has a bit more detail, but can be used to import statistics and can help analyse things. it was useful in my last job for say throwing a load of postcodes at it to map out.

Yes. I've not used any others but MapPoint exposes lots of COM objects so that you can automate it in fairly powerful ways.

Memory Map doesn't say anything about importing locations, so don't think it'll be enough. I'm just looking for an all in program ready out of the box to allow imports of data which you can then specify the information you see when you click on that point, e.g. lat, long and heading. I'm looking in to MapPoint at the moment, it's for work I need this so budget is important as well.

Cheers for your suggestions so far.

Memory map imports the following file types:

MMO - Memory-Map's proprietary overlay object format.

CSV - Memory-Map's Comma Separated Value file. Data can be viewed and manipulated in Microsoft Excel, or other custom applications.

SHP - ESRI Shapefiles. Only points, polygons and polylines are supported, without any M or Z data.

GPX - GPS eXchange

LOC - Standard format used for Geocaching

MXF, RXF, TXF - Maptech's mark, route and track formats for use with Terrain navigator.

TXT - Maptech Chart Navigator / Offshore Navigator formats. The file must be named Marks32.txt, Routes32.txt or TlogN.txt (where N is a number, eg Tlog1.txt).

Note: All positions are Latitude/Longitude and should be calculated using the WGS84 datum. For help in converting OS Grid References, including a web based batch file conversion utility please visit www.gps.gov.uk

This is from their support section PDF on data import; http://www.memory-map.co.uk/downloads/PDF/mm_tsb3_import_export_text_files_FEB_2005.pdf

Cheers for that, I just looked at their features on the web site. I'll download the demo and see if it does what I need.

Thanks

Just had a read through the PDF I linked above, it would seem to do pretty much what you need in terms of tracks and vectors
