Travel Assist KPH/MPH

Featured Replies

I received my new Octavia vRS 245 estate yesterday and it has Travel Assist.  I can see that others have had issues with the satnav displaying distances in kilometres, but has anyone else had issues with travel assist recognising speed signs in kph instead of mph?   Oddly, and at what appears to be random, the car starts to recognise signs in kph, and if travel assist is activated, adjusts the speed of  the car to match in kph, while displaying mph.   For example, national speed limit signs are recognised and a 110 speed sign pops up on the display, and the speed is then automatically set to 68mph.  Speedo and the set speed are in mph.  I have had 40 and 50 signs recognised in kph so the car will set the speed automatically to 24mph or 31 mph.  After a while, the car will revert back to recognising signs in mph but then revert back to kph some time later.     My satnav displays distances in miles and not kilometres.   All settings are in Imperial, including on the Skoda app.  Perhaps more bugs - what is disconcerting is having the car brake to slow to 31mph when you enter a 50mph speed limit, or 24mph when you enter a 40mph speed limit, requiring you to take action to correct it (and irritate all the other drivers around you as the car brakes to slow too much).

The only other thing of note is that apple carplay is a little sluggish when connected using a cable, and the screen becomes distorted when using Waze (pixilated and distorted with the colours bleeding around the map displayed on the screen) occasionally. Hitting the home button and heading back to apple carplay fixes this with Waze temporarily.

As a way of update, Skoda rang me after bringing the car into the dealer.  They are awaiting a fix from the factory as this is a known issue that they are investigating and they consider a software fault.  Whether and when it gets sorted it another matter.   I was told that the car is defaulting to driving on the right and this should not happen.

They also told me that if 5 different customers report a similar fault with a car it triggers the factory to investigate and look to generate a fix.

Any update on a fix that you know of ??

Nothing other than a sometimes weekly email or phone call from Skoda saying they are trying to sort as per the other thread about mph/kph.  It’s a pain if you have ACC set to adjust the speed automatically according to the road sign recognition as it randomly changes to kph on the motorway, dropping your speed to 44mph (70kph) or 68 (100kph) and anchoring the brakes.  It does this randomly in all places and not just the motorway. I have had it get stuck cycling between kph and mph every so many seconds which is almost amusing as the car will slow then speed up and slow again as it cycles between mph and kph.  Turned the option to adjust speed automatically off.  Car will try to stop you overtaking using ACC if it begins to read signs in kph though even if speed adjustment via road sign is turned off. The only thing that seems to stop it is a reset of the infotainment while driving and when it reboots, flick the ACC off and on, and if it picks up a new road sign, it reverts to mph.  However, if there isn’t a sign for a while, it continues to show kph, and you may have to reboot again until you grab a new sign on the camera.  I’m on 1803 software wise.  Have seen on VW forums that VW owners have the same problem and Skoda told me on the phone there are some VW and Audi cars with the same fault.

Here we see 45kph instead of 30mph

I've been getting this fault intermittently in my Karoq, sometimes coupled with a message that the headlights have been set for driving on the right! It seems to be linked to particular roads and I was thinking it was due to a bug in the mapping software, but Skoda UK say not.

I've also been getting occasional messages saying the the Traffic Assist, Lane Assist and Dynamic Road Signs are not available and asked my dealer to investigate a possible software update when I had my car's first service today. But they say Skoda UK have told them the faults are being caused by the heated steering wheel and so have ordered a replacement for me to cure the faults.

When they fit it, we'll find out if they're right :)

Chris

thanks for the update - please let everyone know if it solves the problem - I have my Superb in for up to a week to look into several faults similar to yours.

Sounds like the same fault that is making my ACC stop overtaking cars on the inside lane, the cars keep thinking they are in Europe. They better fix this soon!.

They have said that they think it is the same fault that is causing the ACC to prevent overtaking and the kph/mph issue on other cars without travel assist fitted.  I am waiting for a new virtual cockpit which they hope will fix the problem.

How has the dealer made a link between the fault and a solution ?

Is the virtual cockpit that is being replaced, software, or a new physical display unit.

It's likely that a new display unit will have different software loaded just because it will be later build, in which case there could be lots of updated software to be installed so that everything still works together.

Please keep the forum updated with progress.

The replacement virtual cockpit h/a and s/w fixed both kph/mph and ACC in my car. I don’t have Travel Assist but it seems logical that it may fix that too.

Fingers crossed…will hopefully find out next week.

What evidence of the MPH/KPH issues were you able to give to the dealer / how did you convince them that you had a problem.

How did the dealer convince you that the virtual cockpit has solved the problem.

How far have you driven since the fix to be confident that the issue has been resolved.

I have my car in with a dealer next week for up to a week so that they can gather evidence about a number of issues, including mph/kph, because they will not beliive my photos taken of the sat nav screen.

Which dealer did you use. Maybe my dealer (Marshall) can call them and ask about the fix.

There is lots of detail in the main KPH/MPH thread, most usefully the latter pages. Link below.

But to answer your questions…

  • In settings I could select KPH as units for the speed, but it would only ever display MPH. Going back in to settings, it was again showing MPH. Conversely, with the SatNav, it would only display Kms, note miles. Again, in settings, I could select miles but it only ever displayed Kms. As for ACC, it would occasionally not let me overtake and would allow me to undertake.
  • The dealer, arranged through Škoda UK, had my car for 20 weeks (yes, 20!) during which time various diagnostics were run and ‘the factory’ came up with a fix. My car was one of two test vehicles fitted with the replacement VC & s/w.
  • Since fitting I have covered about 2000 miles; the selection of the units is now fully operational for both speed and SatNav, and the ACC has worked faultlessly since. The bulk of my mileage has been on motorway and dual carriageway and I use ACC a lot.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I don’t have Travel Assist but it seems logical that issues are based in the same/similar s/w bugs.

Škoda UK technical is probably the best place for your dealers to call. They know all about the fix applied to my car (and now several others that I know of).

Thought to update…had the virtual cockpit swapped and thus far no problems.  Time will tell once I cover some more miles, but hopefully this has cured my kph/mph issues with traffic sign recognition with travel assist.

Edit: Scratch that out completely.   Time has revealed today that this has NOT fixed my issues with kph/mph.  It’s exactly the same as it always was!   Still incorrectly reading road signs in kph and adjusting my speed accordingly.  Some roads seems more prone than others, where it tends to always happen, but not always and at times it seems random. Noted that headlight adjustment settings are still automatically reverting back to driving on the right.  Also, ACC automatically tries to stop you from overtaking still, thinking you are undertaking.   So this proposed fix is pants if you travel assist as an option.

Here is a picture from today.

Hi Pete

I had to leave my car with Skoda dealer for  2 weeks to see what could be done about a number of software problems, including kph/mph.  I was told that Skoda "know" about the problem but that there is no fix yet. HOWEVER, after some software updates done at the dealer, I have done 500 miles and no road sign issues with kph/mph - still a bit early to say it's fixed, I now have a NEW message on the Virtual cockpit  "Exceeded speed of 120 kph (should be mph).

What software updates did they apply to your car?  I am still on 1803.  I suggested that they might look to update my software when I dropped the car off at the dealer, but they responded in a rather disinterested way.  This is my 8th Skoda and will likely be my last.  These problems, coupled with faulty parking sensor errors, camera not always coming on in reverse, all round sluggish infotainment unit, the annoying dash popping noise, stereo cutting out, maps not loading, and dealer who is not markedly concerned or responsive has put me off.  I would have thought, having bought 8 cars off the dealer over my life, they might have shown more concern.

They once told me that these issues might be a “feature of the car” or maybe because I have a camera plugged into the USB port on the rear view mirror.

Hi Pete

No information from Skoda about what the software updates were for, so no way to know if anything has been fixed.

I am in touch with Gemma Gough:      [email protected]

She has been "assisting" with my problems, and coordinating with my dealer in Milton Keynes (Marshall).   Might be worth an email to Gemma since she is

So I am booked in for the often fabled March software update next week.  Hopefully, the problems I have had, and others will be sorted.

Hi.  R U talking about "software" or the Sat nav map updates that R supposed to be around every 6 months.

I had an online software update about 2 weeks ago but the the "version" number on the car did not change, however it has been at least 3 months since I last saw the KPH (Instead of MPH) appear on road signs, HOWEVER I now get a new failure being that when I go above 74 mph I get a warning that should be in MPH, but comes out as KPH..

The supposed fix just created a different fault. As afar as I can see SKODA have no idea about how software should used in a car and know even less about how to to test it.

Which does not make me feel very safe since almost everything that runs the car now has a software element to it.

Keep us posted mate, I'm in the same boat as you! Travel assist is pretty much useless at the minute.

Will do.

Infotainment software has been updated to 1896, which appears faster, some changes to menu layout, and thus far, travel assist problems appear sorted.  Niggles with wireless Apple CarPlay connections also seem to have resolved as being unable to adjust the lights for driving on the left and right.
