Strange droning noise

Featured Replies

What a month this has been.

New tyres all round

Full service

Front osf caliper seized on

Rear osr caliper leaking

Headlight xenon bulb gone

New wheel bearing

New calipers

New pads.

Now after fitting tyres had a droning noise and very wheel bearing like.

Anyhow as it was a mates tyre shop he changed the tyre 2 days later and still im getting a droning.

Ordered a new wheel bearing and fitted today. Droning still there but a bit less. Coming from osf wheel. Even when braking you hear a lot of road and braking noise.

So gutted

Do you think when the caliper seized its warped the disc? Surely after 2 tyres and a new wheel bearing can only be the only option? Or have i missed something

Pls pls help before i go crazy

Probably no help, but here goes..

I needed both bearings done on mine. It was an oscillating noise. At some speeds the noise was more prevalent near the passenger footwell, at other speeds near top drivers side windscreen. No mechanic believed it’ was the bearings.

If you got a slight improvement, maybe you need to do another one. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Mmm. Problem is all noise is only at the same osf side.

I had a bearing get really badly worn and never noticed it because it was well masked by the car's sound deadening and tyre roar. It was a bit embarrassing TBH to be told at service that the bearing was knackered and they wouldn't let the car back out the door without doing it (so I got to pay loads extra to have a bearing in a Skoda box fitted instead of getting my indie to do it).

If you're on the 225/40/R18 tyre setup, road noise can be quite intrusive, more so if the alignment is off. I'd have the alignment checked by someone who knows what they're doing, and get the wheel bearings checked for play while the car is in the air. Also, some tyres are far far worse for noise than others - double check the noise rating on the ones you got.

One last possibility is that the outer CV joint is on its way out. Again, something to check if the car is on a lift. Any play in the joint means it's dead.

I do have the 18" setup.

My bearing didn't look to bad when i took it off noise wise but had play in it. I do recall when i took wheel off a day before getting tyres done that wheel was stuck on so as you do i booted the top of the wheel at 12 o clock and it came off straight away. But that made think maybe the bearing became loose like that. Although whenever i span it up couldn't get any noise.

Now outer cv joint i did think of that.

But never having ever had an outer cv joint drone like this and only click on full lock thats a new one for me.

I had it out today as well while doing the bearing i should have checked. Ok so is it a sharp wiggle for play?
