Driver's window not working

Featured Replies

So my driver's window won't work using the switch or key fob. Drivers switch won't operate the passenger's side either but passenger side switch works fine. Took switch out and feels ok and plugged it back in. Unplugged the loom at the door hinge and found a broken wire which looks like the one going to the motor. Would that effect the drivers switch not working on the passenger's window too?

Best recommendations please...

Take the loom out completely, checking each wire and repairing?

Buy and fit a new loom myself?

Or take to a garage?

What sort of cost am I looking at?

Yes, that wire will prevent the driver's side module from working, and that module is what looks at the switches on the driver's side and tells the passenger side module to open/close its window accordingly.

Repair that wire, looking also for any others that may need pre-emptive action to prevent breakage in the near future; cracked insulation may be a sign of near failure.

If your confident in electrical repair, then thats certainly an option, but the limiting factor is space to be able to do a proper repair.

"if" you decide to replace. a new loom is approx £85 ish from dealer.............failing that a good used one. I have my old one on Ebay now if your interested, I replaced it to retro-fit rear electric windows.

Having unplugged the connector, and unbolted the check-strap, it's probably remarkably easy to take the whole door off for massively improved access. Certainly the case on a mk1. Just anticipate the weight as you lift it off, have some foam or something to stand it on and lean it against, and get an assistant to help refit it without knocking anything.
