Subwoofer location in Estate -- thoughts?

Featured Replies

Any thoughts on best location for 12 inch subwoofer (Rockford Fosgate P300-12) in an estate Octavia? Or is it a question of just changing around the location and firing angle till you hit the sweet spot (in relation to driver's listening position)

It depends on your requirements.  Space/position vs sound.  If you can fit it in the seat behind the driver that may well be a good spot acoustically.  In the boot somewhere would be more practical but likely to lose energy from it via the rear seats and it being further away.  I've always thought on top of the tunnel between the rear footwells would be a good compromise.  Would obviously require a custom box.

The bass a sub speaker will put out is omni directional so direction and placement is not vital. The best place for a speaker of that size is in the boot in a proper box. You need to check if the speaker needs a sealed or vented box. Usually vented give extra bass at the cost of depth. I prefer sealed boxes as they give tighter bass. You shouldn't hear a correctly set up sub speaker as it should underpin the sound and not dominate it. Like teenagers from the 90s and the max power era.

If you work on the 'formal' solution, you can put the base speaker in either the front of the dash in the middle (where the Canton system has its base) or you can put in the space where the spare wheel lives (a SEAT/Audi option).  Speak with @SashaGrace or look towards the end of the Sasha's VRS thread in the Octavia 3 section for more info.

The centre dash speaker in Canton is not for bass and it's also a rather small speaker. Assuming you could even find something to fit that location, it would be a terrible place to put a bass speaker.

The canton sub is in its own enclosure and located in the boot to the side, which works very well.

My 12 inch sub is fitted in the spare wheel well, as my car didn't come with a spare wheel. Amps and DSP all fit in there as well. No issues with volume.

Pretty sure canton subs have been fitted under the driver seat. As said, the Dash speaker is a central channel.

A couple of us have bought the custom box below which fits in the space behind the near side rear wheel arch, it’s for a 10” sub though:

From my experience that 10” sub is more than enough!

Hope that helps,

Where did you get it from?

I had a 12"  running 1krms in my MK2 Estate behind the seats firing to the rear. Full width, around 14" high and 12" deep iirc. I could still fit 4 of the larger Aldi bags in the back (Just!), or a Tesco food crate, or a number of RC trucks...

Before that I had a lower power 12" which was on a shallower box, I think that one was 10" deep, still full width and around 14 high.

Also had a 2x12" sealed box that was massive....had to wedge it in between the strut towers, that fired upwards and took up a lot more floorspace! Didn't sound any better either!

Both the single boxes were tuned to low 30s. Sounded pretty decent, made everything shake, broke a window regulator...just no where near enough to crack a windscreen 😂

Which reminds me....I'm going to have to go check on my Mk2 at some point...poor things been stood for months!

I always found that my 2x10" vented box sounded better with the subs facing away from the driver, so it's worth experimenting if possible.

Facing away reverses the phasing of the direct sound, that may have been the cause of the better sound.
