What Android App is best for use as Satnav with Smartlink?

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

As Petrol estate SE L models seem to be rarer than rocking horse dung I'm hoping that the hive mind can provide me with the name of the best Android app to simulate a Satnav.  Google maps doesn't seem to want to let me choose an alternate route to the one that it determines s being the quickest..

I have been a happy Waze user for few years now.

A bit of an update as I can't even see this version in the Google Store.

As a holder of the World + Traffic lifetime licence, I'd have thought the update would have been available (and free) but it just doesn't show up for me.

Perhaps other UK people could have a look to see if it's available as there's certainly some reviews about it (not too good though) but I didn't notice where they were from.

It is still in beta, in Google store select your installed Sygic app then scroll down and below developer contact is become a Beta tester select and follow instructions.

@Kenrw8Are you 100% able to join the beta programme as it's showing that it's full to me?

I've looked the web site and no Beta, and it confuses me. My app says that I'm beta tester , though looking at licences I've got Premium lifetime for,.Basic World, Dash cam, Traffic EU, Traffic works, Real view navigation and World + Traffic.

And sygic store says that Android Auto version is available and can be purchased at £33.49, expensive

I'm not going leave beta in case I can't get back in.

This install has AA

Don't know if if it costs

Hi @john999boy I've got Lifetime Premium + Traffic (World + Traffic)  as well, thanks to this topic I've just checked, five days ago there was a Sygic update for my phone and just looked at @Kenrw8 link above.

Basically the Sygic app is available in the list of apps on Android Auto, but if you want 3D mapping and sounds you need to buy Premium for Android Auto for £33.49.

You can't drag or zoom the map either, I'll probably wait and see if they have one of their offers before taking the plunge.

That shows as my installed v18.8.6 - not the v20+ that Android Auto requires!

As you both can download a newer version than I can see, I presume that @Cakemonster is also a beta tester?

I've also uninstalled/re-installed to see if that sorts anything - it hasn't......

Looking at this further it also seems that Sygic operates a Staged Rollout system so maybe my name isn't yet on the update list?

If I am a beta tester, it's news to me :D

I think they do operate a staged rollout.

I've just installed TomTom amigo (free) and it is AA compatible, it showed up on AA on my Pioneer head unit

Downside maps not downloadable, so will not work when phone signal is not available. Also not forgetting the other sat nav rely on phone connection for traffic, so they'll not work either without a signal

Google maps with offline maps of your choice?

Even though I have an iPhone and use CarPlay I use Google Maps because of the offline maps option which Apple maps doesn't offer.

Daft question, can you get traffic on the offline maps?

Yes you can.

Good to know that you can with Google Maps, it's what I like about Sygic, you only use data for traffic

I'm liking TomTom Amigo, I've got it to turn on on  Bluetooth auto connect to headunit. So whilst the phone is in my pocket I get voice warning of speed cameras and now also when 5% may change to 10% above speed limit. Multiple options of +Mph or +% are available.

Any live updates, for alternative route , road works etc require  mobile data connection, if phone signal is not available there's no live updates.

I had the Sygic update request last week so gave it a try.
Initially I thought the settings needed sorting but no, pay (more) and you get to listen to your route as well as watch it! :crying:

Thanks all who have responded to this thread.  I pick up my 2018 Octavia estate later this week, so given that it will be clean and shiny already I can use the time to experiment with these Apps. Though I might just end up utilising my old Tomtom satnav rather than the integrated display.  I'm not sure why I'm so bothered about this - it's very rare that I go anywhere that I don't already know the route!

As I've mentioned I have sygic available on AA but I do prefer the TomTom Amigo on AA even though it uses phone data.

I'm on O2 (50 gig SIM only data) and have had very few places where signal was weak , which can also be said for the other networks coverage.

And I like auto amigo  Bluetooth phone connection which gives me speed camera and excess speed notifications on the phone , whilst phone in my pocket, without the wire connection of AA.

odds on that's a better pratnav than any $car-manufacturer system.

Personally I've found my old W10 smartphone better than my ones. My old brick has an old version of "Here we go " installed with the downloaded maps, so it doesn't need to use data.

I have Waze on everytime I drive, even when I dont have a route planned. I can see streets ahead of me if traffic is slowing down or halted. Also it warns me of accidents, speed traps and other obstacles. Data is user generated.
