Do I have a fake?

Featured Replies

Seems that I haven't got much luck with things recently. This is another one of those things

Bought a VCDS HEX-V2 cable with unlimited VINs from eBay (sacraladge) used and plugged it in, everything seemed to work fine, scanns, coding all good.

I went on the ross tech to ask for some help with some coding and basically got told I bought a fake and my priviledges got removed so I can't even ask why?

Could somone please let me know if that's true? At least I can start to get my money back and put a claim in if it's correct. Here are some pictures.

Can I post a picture with the About/Licence number and all that?

That's what is needed for Ross-Tech to know if it's genuine or not - and since you're already posting on their forum there really is no point posting here as well!

Bottom line - if the boss/founder of Ross-Tech, Uwe Ross, says it's a fake I've never known him be wrong B)

I can see you have replied back on the ross tech forum, I can't post anything in there anymore as they blocked my priviledges. Where do I find the serial number of the cable sorry?

Did it come with a CD which had the software on and how much did you pay?

As above, if rosstech say it's a fake, then it will be. They make them and have numerous ways to check. Unfortunately there are loads of fakes around.

A genuine hex-v2 with unlimited vins is probably worth around £400 but I don't think they sell it with unlimited vins.

Instead, a 10-vin is around £300 and a 3-vin is around £225. Either are upgradable to unlimited vins 👍

I see so it's more of a case that Hex-V2 doesn't come unlimeted unless you pay ross tech

A 3-vin HEX-v2 on it's own is almost that price!

I'd send it back and get a refund :)

Can I check if I understand this right, the cable can be original, but the licence purchased is not hence why it says Unlimeted vin and hence why I have a whole laptop with it? lol Jokes on me...

Fake cables usually come with cloned, non updatable software on a CD. Yours looks to have been installed.

Make a backup and try updating if that isn't the latest version - I haven't checked!

Another thing you could do is try the cable on another computer with freshly downloaded software.

Could it also be that the cable has already been registered and that's why you're being denied forum access? IIRC reregistering requires an additional fee.

Notify both the seller and ebay if its found to be fake and demand a refund. If you bought via Paypal or credit card you also have additional buyer protections avaolable if the goods supplied are not as described.

Does the ebay listing actually claim it's a genuine Ross-tech cable? Bet it's cleverly worded to sound like it's saying that without actually doing so.

No but it has the picture of the ross tech cable and it says it's not a cheap chinese cable. I Mean the whole thing works fine....I just can't resell it and recover the money if I get rid of my vag cars

You got what you paid for and what was advertised I'm afraid.

It sounds like it works on your car and other then the risk of screwing up their ECU's you should try it on others to see if it is unlimited VINs, you cannot get support from Rosstech unless you pay for a proper licensed dongle, the software is free, its the access to the support that you pay for.

The seller of this (not so cheap) counterfeit dongle has not paid for a license, had he done so you would have benefitted from it.

You either use it as it is and accept there may be something nasty lurking in the software or hardware or pay for a genuine lead and license agreement I'm afraid.

Does the lead you have carry the Rosstech moulded logo and the printed velcro cable tidy? If it does then thats maybe your only chance of disputing it with Paypal/E-bay.

looking at his 1st pic it does indeed have a moulded logo and printed tidy

The actual cable and advertised cable have different serial numbers. :wait:

Description is correct, its not a cheap chinese cable, its an expensive chinese cable.

Bertie90 posted an Auto-Scan on the Ross-Tech forum made with the cable & software he purchased - that was checked by Ross-Tech (specifically Uwe Ross the owner and founder) who was able to clearly and caegorically tell that the software had been hacked to work with a clone cable. So it's not a previously registered problem, the cable is a fake - period.

Bertie90 needs to contact eBay and tell them he's been sold an illegal copy and wants them to refund him under their buyer protection scheme.

BTW Ross-Tech don't completely block access to "pirates" only limit their access to certain sections of their forum.

Ross-Tech like some of the other VCDS forums ARE picky.

I have a genuine VCDS cable, which I bought second hand. I can post in some of their forums, but for some reason I cannot post in others because it had not been ordered through them. Some other VCDS forums also only give full access if bought through them.

So @Bertie90 have you tried this cable on another computer with newly downloaded software yet as that should prove it one way or another?

You need to transfer ownership of the cable to yourself, then you will be able to become a verified member on the Ross-Tech forum and post in any of their public forums.
