Knocking sound on idle

Featured Replies

Hello.

Car is making knocking sound when car is on idle. You can slightly hear the same sound also when throttling. The pace/rhythm of the sound is always the same despite engine rpm. I am not able to locate the sound when the hood is up. Sometimes the sound disappears for a little while and then comes back again. I don't remember hearing it during the first 1000 km. Total distance is now 1800 km.

Car is Skoda Karoq 1.5 TSI DSG MY21

Any ideas what is making this noise and how to fix it?

Take a vid clip with it making the sound, for the sound rather than the pics, post it on YouTube then post the link.

I also hear this sound from time to time... but only on cold start and not always.

Ours is MY21 1.5TSI DSG has done the same from new. Think it’s normal I put it down to cylinder deactivation or the gasoline particulate filter or similar. So many things going on in a modern engine I just take it as witchcraft rather than combustion cycle that keeps them going!

Also have this noise on mine must be normal

I took the car to dealer for investigation and repair. They found that the noice is coming from ”active chracoal filter solenoid valve”. Spare part needs to be ordered abroad and it takes about two weeks to arrive in finland.

Same car 1.5 DSG '20 and same noise.

Sure when car is "cold", not sure to ear after the first 15/20 mins.

My dealer told me this noise come from the DSG when the oil in the gears is cold, for now I have believed it, (6.000 KM)

Sounds very familiar.

My dealer told that it was difficult to locate where the noise is coming and they found out that it always starts one minute after starting the car. Probably that is how they were able to locate it in solenoid valve of active charcoal filter. Maybe it always starts minute after startup.

Looking forward to get it replaced and see if the noise disappears.

Now I got the valve replaced and the knocking sound seems to be gone.

Btw this time they talked about "valve of activated charcoal canister".

where is this valve located and how long did it take to replace it ?

I also have this noise especially in the cold period of the year  and I heard it when car sitting few minutes in idle mode to defrost the windows

Hi

Exactly the same sound my car does on idle. i was searching where it is coming from for months. Like you said it started after first 1k-2k km. Totally by chance i find it. As you said it is coming from the selenoid valve. But not because the valve itself ,where it is attached to. this valve is attached to the coolant expansion tank. When the valve starts working the valve vibrates the expansion tank.in my opinion as it is half with fluid the empty space magnifies the sound. in my car when you press the tank and valve with your hand the knocking sound stops.

i will visit dealer next month. if they find a proper solution i will share it here.

This is the valve and the tank where it is attached.

Hi I seem to have the exact same issue. I have a cam sensor issue that’s being fixed so I thought it was down to a bad idle. However I am glad that you have found the issue with the solenoid valve.

What was the outcome of the visit to the garage?

1. is this normal and nothing to worried about?

2. is the solenoid faulty or will the vibration damage anything?

3. can this be repaired or replaced under warranty. Also my car only has 5k on it and a lot of people are saying they have this noise from nearly new. Will this part fail every 5-10k or is this a recall or  known issue from Skoda?

Any updates would be great. Thanks

(In my attached video you can hear the sound stop after 17s with a picture of my finger in the shot. )

My 1.5 TSi has a knocking noise in this exact area. It’s the ribbed hose that has split causing an air leak.

The picture is part of the activated charcoal canister system. The puffing noise is it working. If the pipe breaks, which it did on my 1.0tsi Kamiq, it gets a whole lot louder, but it is normal.
