I tend to disagree Martin i am afraid, the granular structure of the aluminum depending on the casting process could be so small that it would appear[/b'] to be in a straight line, to get the zig zag effect you are hinting at would require very slow controlled cooling to produce larger grain form, which wont happen with mass produced alloy wheels, However, until more pictures are posted up about the mode of failure all we can do is speculate. :D

Agreed. I was making a bad job of saying it looks to striaght to be a casting failure.

EDIT: Just a thought but what if the casting was bad such that the structure was aero baring?

Porosity is the word you are looking for, and as far as I'm aware it is standard to X-Ray alloys wheels after casting for exactly this reason.

Hi' date=' can we have close up quality pics please of both sides? I'll refer them to a friend of mine who's a forensic engineer.

Cheers,

Jon.[/quote']

if this helps.

Can you get a picture from a different angle? At first look it appears that something has cut into the wheel.

Also you might be able to claim off your insurance for the wheel and tyre, as it was an accidental situation (As long as your NCB is protected and your excess is sensible)

This is a commonly held and much promulgated myth!

A protected "no claims" only protectes the percentage of the premium you're discounted.

It DOESN'T protect the premium.

If you make a claim in such circumstances your premium will go up next year - the "protected" nature is irrelevant to this - and you WILL pay more...

Been there - done that.... When I had an Impreza I calculated - with the assistance of my insurance broker running different scenarios through his computer system - that the break-even point on a claim was approximately just over

For my twopeneth that definately looks like something cut into the wheel significantly weakening it.

if this helps.

Hi

This looks pretty classic. Something has got between wheel and probably caliper and pared off the inner rim. You can also see a witness mark nearer the spokes where material appears to have been removed leaving curls of swarf.

High res close ups would confim it, but you can clearly see the cut face and accompanying parallel score lines.

Yep. :iagree:

What a bugger though. I think you are just very unfortunate, and I really dont think Skoda, or the warranty are liable to pay out in this instance.

Sorry fella. :(

Something has cut nearly halfway through the thickness of the wheel before it failed, by the looks of the pictures. I wonder what it was. :rubchin: As someone posted earlier in the thread, it must have been held against the wheel under pressure for it to have continued to dig its way through the metal.

if it was a random foreign object then i'd say skoda aren't liable. if it was something like the ARB that came away from its mount then skoda are liable.

tough situation.

... and I'm surprised it didn't make a noise...

... and I'm surprised it didn't make a noise...

Very suprised it did not make a noise, I had a stone trapped last week and the car sounded like a goods train with a dry axle screeching

Although as explained earlier it would just take several seconds at 70mph to cut enough groove to provide collapse and cutting Aluminium alloy is almost silent as it is so soft

Daz what speed were you at when the collapse occured, obviously slowly or the tyre would be shredded?

What is even more suprising is that although we have sympathy for Daz we are all zooming around at 70mph secure in the knowledge that this will not happen to us  ( I am out first thing checking mine in the morning):(

National aka Jimbo

It's very unlikely to be a stone. The initial impression of the forensic engineer is that it is a cast failure. This obviously has wider implications for all of us.

He is reviewing the larger images but will probably need to see the actual wheel. If so, I will post the address. In the meantime, please don't put the two parts together as this can cause problems forensically.

Cheers,

Jon.

its funny how the car had been in to get the eibachs fitted a couple of days before and the garage said the arb needed replacing after the wheel broke. it was the same garage so im beginning to think he might not have put the arb back on propperly and this has got jammed and caused the damage. could this happen?

Sounds sus.......

Hi,

I have had some more feedback from the forensic engineer who comments as follows.

what exactly was done to the vehicle (re: Eibach mod)?

How soon after did the wheel fail?

What was said by the garage when you took the wheel in?

Have you got the original arb that was replaced?

Where abouts are you in the north east? If necessary, we could get an engineer to inspect the wheel for circa £75 which of course would be recoverable if you can prove that the garage was at fault.

Cheers,

Jon.

Nothings happened with this. Skoda wont pay out and i cant be bothered with the grief. got some new wheels anyway for the same price i sold the remaining 3 originals so im not out of pocket.:)

hey thats the same wheels i have on my fabia wagon.... except i have 15"s good wheel

Seems like they are being pretty bad about this IMHO.

Still at least you are not out of pocket.

Sadly however you dont see the big picture and the fine balancing act we try to maintain with Skoda. We are trying to be friend them to further the site and stupid posts like that dont help and only further the distance between us.

Glad someone understands.
