vibrations above 50mph

Featured Replies

My mk3 TSI vibrates at speed, it's not something that peaks at a certain speed like if wheels are out of balance.  You can feel it in the seats but not the steering wheel.  Noticeable on the motorway mostly.

I'm not sure if it's geometry, or tyres that are too hard (Avon zz5 235/45R18 98Y extra load).  They've got a lot of tread so shame to change them.

Appreciate any thoughts, thank you

If the vibration can be seen in seats and sun visors, according to the vag group, it is normal.

Rear tyres?

Avon ZZ5 are asymmetrical so get the rear wheels/tyre balanced and refit them on the opposite side to which they were fitted.

Thanks, AG Falco

Sounds like sawtooth / castellated tyre wear on the rear. It's relatively common on these, it can be solved by always putting the new rubber on the rear and moving the rears forward

Thanks for the replies, I've just had a look at the back and it was a delinte dh2 rear drivers side  W rated and Avon zv7 rear passenger Y rated. Both front ones Avon zz5 Y. Didn't notice when I got it.

Seems a shame to get rid of such expensive tyres, all have lots of tread, cannot see sawtooth from what I can tell.

All are the correct size.

It's actually different tyres on the rear, have updated on a post

As well as that being a possible issue, maybe one or more tyre does need balanced as that is what you say in the OP that it feels like.

It's a good, and cheap, place to start I guess!

As well to look to see if it is obvious where there was a stick on balance weight and now there is not now.

Also check the wheel bolts for tightness.

Check the tyre walls on the inside of the car, ie the other sidewalls from the outside ones for bulges.

?

While at it have the tyre pressures been checked recently and the TPMS reset?

Anyway, I am very disappointed with the ride quality of my Superb (2016 tdi 190 4x4 combi style).  Unacceptable vibrations and aerodinamics noises in a 40k euro car.

@GabrielemDid you get it new 5 years ago and have stuck with it all this time with it being like that?

They are certainly not all like that.

Ciertamente no todos son así.

No, no, I bought the car 9 months ago.  I put 4 Michelin primacy 4 on it and balanced 3 times.  I have tried several at the dealership and felt the same.

Best check the suspension parts for the poor ride.

My rather heavy e-Corsa came on Primacy 4 as do many EV's now as they might help the range by having poor traction / grip.

They are terrible tyres to get as a OEM fit, and i am surprised anyone would choose to fit them.  I replace them with CrossClimates then Alpin 6 from Michelin.

Just had rear wheels balanced, problem solved.  Apparently it's not unusual for rears not to be rebalanced when new tyres are fitted.  Both were quite out.

Just removing the old wheel balancing weights might have improved things.

You could have checked the static wheel balance using a bubble balancer.

Static (Bubble) Balancer Versus Dynamic (Digital) Balancer

Did you swap them from side to side as well?

As it happens, yes, but the garage didn't think it would make any difference.

Either way, the car is driving nice and smoothly now, I just need to dampen the vibrating fuel lines and I'll be a happy bunny.

On another note, the 220 engine really is fast, every time I put my foot down I smile.  First car I've had that can lose traction at 40mph just from accelerating though, I can see why 4x4 is recommended for this engine.  The 280 engine must be nuts!

It can, by regularly rotation, help to stop the sawtooth pattern on the inside edge of the tyres developing.

This is normally noticed by a wheel bearing type noise.

That's just people being lazy and not do the job properly! Wheels should be balanced no matter where they are fitted!

I would never accept an unbalanced wheel regardless of where on the car it was being fitted.  Not doing so is very poor on the part of whoever fitted them.

Quite!

Indeed, these were fitted before I got the car, which was recently.  The dealer has agreed to meet the cost of balancing.

I have only recently bought a Superb 1.4 Sportline with which I am very pleased but with regard to saw tooth wear on rear tyres, I previously owned a VW passat which had this problem. I checked the rear suspension alignment and found it was out. After proper realignment the problem improved . I am not yet sure if the Superb rear suspension could have similar properties but maybe it could be worth checking.
