Thinking about Carista .

Recommended Posts

Hi folks I know its been discussed many time ..but before I order it for use on my 2017 Fabia colour edition is it liable to fxxk things up on my fabia .First thing I want to do is to activate the rear lights when the front DRL's are on .

I've not used one before but it looks straight forward enough...but hey u never know .

I’d personally opt for OBDeleven Pro.  Do the adaptations and long coding yourself.  It’s a more polished product as well IMO.  I’ve used mine on a Fabia CE in the past with no issues.

Thanks for the reply ...Carista looks easy enough but I was just worried about once I plug it in and do a couple of changes that I would do permanent damage to the cars ECU or something.....BTW to date I've had 41 views on a post with the word "Carista" in the title so anyone clicking into would have had an idea of the content but only had one person that could be bothered to help out ...not great !

Sometime people might be reading the subject, but not have time to reply and may reply later. Like me:biggrin:

Anyway, I've used Carista on my car and anything you change can be changed back. I've enabled the Hill Hold, and like the one you want, the rear Scandinavian DLR lights, as well as a couple of others. You will be fine changing things via Carista. These things are tested a lot before being released to the public.

Thanks for the reply ...how does the payment work ?

If I take it for a month to see how it goes..I think its 9.99 but will that renew automatically every month unless I cancel ...is it PayPal.??

I'd definitely opt for OBDEleven, over the 5 years I've had the tool it has more than paid back what it was worth.

Have programmed 4 different vehicles for more features, retrofitted a newer radio to a caddy, automatic headlights to my Fabia 3 and it was the tool that allowed me to fully replace my tailgate which had rust with a newer 2018 tailgate that had different regplate lights.

I'm going to be retrofitting cruise control to the caddy in a couple of weeks and this tool gives me confidence without a doubt, the history feature is especially useful if you need to rollback any changes.

Carista is excellent for doing simple adaptions, but as stated it lacks more advanced functionality.

When you purchase Carista you get 1 months free trial of the advanced functions, by electing for for the 1 year subscription. This is via your App Store. You can cancel the subscription 1 day before the month ends and you have nothing more to pay.
You can revive the subscription at any time you need it.

Carista is a great tool and is growing with features year on year. I have had it for years. (Only recently upgraded to OBDEleven when I retrofitted fog lights into my Colour Edition and needed to code them in)

If you just want to activate the basics like Scandinavian DRL's (rear lights on with drl), needle sweep, unlock all doors, hill hold assist then paying £25 for the Carista dongle on amazon is your best option and being that its just a simple click to activate its fool proof.

OBD11 on the other hand is more advanced and can cause issues if you do something wrong as you will be doing the coding yourself. BUT that said, if you do backups and make notes of the coding before you change it, you can always revert what you've done easily. This tool is great if you plan on retrofitting add ons like, reversing camera, auto light sensor, fog lights, washer fluid level sensors etc etc as this tool allows you to delve into the long coding.  Plus if you are planning on coding more than your own car within the VAG range and not only a Fabia its also a little better.

But for the many Carista is the better option and far cheaper, plus you only activate the options once and then you wont touch the device again until you need to read a code. You can get a free months trial of Carista PRO which gives you full access.

Carista - Basic but great for your average joe who just wants to have simple and easy adaptations (£25)

OBDEleven - For those at home DIY / Driveway mechanics and those who want to do more advanced coding.  (£125)

For the full list of what you can do on the Fabia have a look at the list I created on here. -

Carista is straightforward and easy from my recent experience on a Kodiaq.  It's done what I needed to do for less than a tenner for a months subscription as I already had an ELM327 dongle.  As others have said a lot of the changes people make are made once and that's it.  I've changed a few things just to try them and then changed some back with no issues (and still have a couple of weeks left to play)

Yes very easy, just select the option and apply. No errors or anything. No it won't turn off as the stop start only cuts the engine not the power, so DLR lights, radio, headlights, and rear lights etc still work as normal when the Stop/Start function kicks in.

Hi it has been suggested that cars built 2019 May    to   2020 May have had the stop and start option terminated because of diesel gate  so you are not allowed to code  them anymore is this correct or is it is a misconception thank you for previous post

I did think the same I will look into this thank you for pointing me in the right direction I'll have to phone up a VW specialist garage that does coding just to ask him the simple question yes or no and this particular year of model yes I would have thought on the newer models that's just come out but on the Old Mark II I think it should still be the same didn't want to buy a obd11 and find it didn't work

It should do, if not it will catch up soon, the app gets updated regularly as cars change etc and updates get sent out automatically to your copy of the app.

Wont be because of DG but more likely due to emissions regs...

I have just bought the Carista box but seeing as I'm a cheap skate, is there any apps that are cheaper which will allow you to make amendments to things like the lights and needle sweep etc

If OBDEleven is anything to go by, it is proprietary software that runs with the tool to do more advanced modifications.

You need to ask yourself if it worth risking non approved methods to save a bit of money with the risk of nuking a module that could reach into thousands of £?
