Rear suspension spring assisters / upgrade

Featured Replies

I understand that the Superb Estate has relatively soft rear springs which can sag as soon as any weight is put in the car.

My last estate had the Grayston rubber rings in the rear springs, and it worked well with no breakages in the 50k I had the car.

Has anyone tried them with the Superb?  Or what other solution / system is there available?

Thanks!

They are a horrible bodge that locks part of the spring increasing the spring rate but also the strain on the spring and can cause it to go coilbound before the bumpstops have acted, they being made of spongy foam will have probably already degraded.

Grayston Engineering who make them also make the far superior helper springs which work very well without changing the ride height.

My last 2 Skodas I have fitted uprated OE springs, the ones designated "rough road market" as they are cheaper but they have raised the ride height which was OK by me but not for some others.

Increasing the ride height may affect the rear axle geometry and induce uneven tyre wear?

So the helper springs will make little difference to the ride height?

No difference aside from if it is already sagging.

I've had some (rubber helpers) fitted to the Passat for the last week or so. Only raised the ride height by a few mm. Helped stop bottom out when loaded up (the reason I fitted them). The road holding is much better now but I know it's not a long term solution. Has a similar effect to fitting a stiffer rear roll bar when unloaded so that is what I will fit in its place. I think this will help solve the somewhat sold back end*

*If the superb is softer than the Passat I'm glad I got the VW in the end even if I'm still not 100% happy with it.

Your rear springs on the Superb MK3 estate might have OEM part number 3Q0511115AK with the following specification.

If so, changing to the next stiffest spring with OEM part number 3Q0511115AL will stiffen things up. The unladen ride height will be about the same.

The following two springs match OEM part number 3Q0511115AL

KYB RA5331

Kilen 65125

On ebay, you can get the KYB RA5331 for about £27 each, and the Kilen 65125 for about £31 each.
