Sim Racing

Featured Replies

Not sure if anyone else plays any of the sim racing games on a wheel, but I’ve recently upgraded from a TX leather edition to a TS-XW racer with a Sparco P310 rim. The difference in steering feel and car placement is fantastic. I thought it might be a slight difference, but it’s absolutely night and day. It’s managed to drop over a second off some of my AC and Forza Motorsport lap times. Even WRC feels so much more connected.
The kids have also noticed how much better it feels and how much easier it is to control cars in Forza Horizon games they play.
So definitely worthwhile if anyone else is considering getting into these type of games or building a better rig.
Also be interested to see what others are playing on if they already do enjoy a bit of sim entertainment, and hear their views on different rig set ups.
Direct drive wheel anyone?

I've been through a few. From DFGT to G27. Then from there got gifted a T300RS witht he 458 italia wheel and Fanatec Clubspory V2s. Only problem was it was attached to a playseat challenge, so you had to put enough force into the brake pedal to lift yourself and then add the force:blink:.
Upgraded that to a GT Omega Titan Rig recently so everything is nice and secure! Pretty much spend any sim time on Assetto Corsa Competizione, currently taking part in an endurance series of 12 and 24hr races:o. And also a thursday night cup at Kyalami with prize money, which I may have a very remote chance of getting near:D

SWMBO has also got interested recently, so she has the playseat and a T500RS & Pedals.

Even the difference between the T300 and T500 is big for me regarding feedback. Looking forward to seeing how Fanatec's new DD wheel does regarding reliability, but it might be a future purchase. Then again, one of the fastest guys I know races on Jenson Button's Esports team, and just has a G29 clamped to a desk:rofl:

I was looking at a new rig as my pedal plate does bend a bit under braking, but I’m trying to get a hold of a set of T-lcm pedals first. I’m liking the look of the RS6 Mach 3 trak racer, but it’s harder to sneak into the house than a wheel and pedals. 😂

Yeah thats one big plus with the omega titan rig, its rock solid on the brakes, made a huge difference for me. The other plus is the previous owner replaced the feet with braked casters, so I can wheel it out of the way into a corner when its not being used. New they are currently up for £409, and no problems with having to pay extra fees from EU as they are UK based:biggrin:

New rig from Santa at Christmas, and it seems he’s concerned Dirt rally is becoming more dangerous than it used to be. 😂

Ah here lads,

unless this is your racing rig, are you even really trying to make it feel more realistic?

Depending on how the Fabia's MOT goes will depend on whether or not I'm making one of those... :D

This is over achieving for sim rigs at home.

And this is first rate driving on a rig as well.

Just found this thread whilst thinking up ways to spend three months recovering from surgery ...... Grand T 7 is a winner (always played them from the very first one on PS1) but always used the controller. Fancy getting a wheel and pedal set, which I've been looking into this morning.

I can't really justify £300 on the G29 (brand new) or even £180 on a used one if I'm honest, which is a shame as they seem to be highly rated.

Anyone tried a Superdrive SV750 Pro Sport wheel??? Found one on Ebay local to me for £100 (item 203924833228 for anyone interested to see it) that has a stand for it.

I'd advise against it to be honest. First of all the wheel itself is only £60 new, so the price on ebay even with the stand isnt really a great deal.
Second, there is no force feedback, only 'vibration motors'.  So the experience would probably be very lacklustre. As a general rule, most people would consider the Logitech G25/27/29 as the bare minimum budget wheel and it goes up from there (Direct-drive wheels for £1,500+). It might be worth keeping an eye on some simracing forums (RaceDepartment for example) in their for sale section for people who are upgrading selling off their old stuff.
Something like a Thurstmaster T150 may also do the trick, probably a similar level to a logitech G25/27 but PS compatable (See ebay item 275287309558 as an idea) and has force feeback. Or one with some upgraded pedals (which are worth £100 alone) at item number 394038064808.

Or if you are reading this before 7pm today, 0 bids on this bargain.... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/115356753239?hash=item1adbcc5d57:g:YqIAAOSw~dtiXX~4

Thanks for the reply and feedback on the item I posted, much appreciated.

I'll take a proper look at the one you posted in a bit and do some more searching :)

Well if you have any more questions then just ask. Been simracing for 20 years 😬
Had about 4 different wheels, though nothing upmarket (I don't have that budget!) but know people who have, so can give some advice based on experience;)

On the Thrustmaster side of things, most people go for the t300rs for PlayStation compatability.  The higher end tgt-2 is priced a bit silly, as it sits in the same region as the Fanatec DD. It’s a slippery slope though. Once you start, you just keep adding things. Shifter, handbrake and uprated  pedals etc.
Im not sure what stores you have available, but CEX in the U.K. normally has some used examples of the Logitech and thrustmaster sets in stock. They are a bit cheaper than new and come with a 2 year guarantee.
The Thrustmaster items are well catered for in aftermarket modifications. There’s mods for the shifter to make it feel more realistic, and magnetic shifters for the wheels. There is also a multitude of mods for the brake pedal feel and stiffness adjustment.
Its all really going to depend on how much you think your going to enjoy it and whether you think your going to get into it or not after you recover from surgery.

I don’t want to spend silly money as I just don’t how much I would actually play after recovery. Don’t get me wrong, as a teenager I was an avid gamer, but priorities change as you get old and just don’t play it that much anymore.

Still got a few weeks to ponder over this and appreciate the food info you guys have passed on 👍

Did you ever make a decision on this one??

As a sim racing update, got an invitation to a one off race with a £10k prize pool the other day, sadly the entry fee was beyond what I had on me at the time otherwise it might have been a nice paycheck....
But on similar lines, I've now started working for a company that creates setups for various sims as one of their engineers, so now im getting paid to faff about with cars in games:rofl:

Sounds like the perfect job @robt100 😎

I'm currently crafting myself a little sim rig that I can put in front of my 65-inch TV and store in a corner of my bedroom if not needed.

There's already  gaming PC hooked on the telly.  Some years ago I built myself a gaming seat that I can put in front of the telly for playing more competitive stuff (shooters) via mouse and keyboard.

That seat is mounted on a wooden console with rubber feets so it stands solid but can be move around on front wheels if you lift the rear end.

I already owned a cheap thrustmaster T150 set (I barely used) but decided to give simracing another shot with a fanatec DD some weeks ago. That one was (or still is) currently on sale btw.

As for the pedal set I'm using a modded thrustmaster T-LCM set with loadcell brake wich is pretty nice. The stuff mounted on a wheelstand pro.

I had to make a little improvement with the wheelstand since the entire assy moved away from the seat during playing - thanks to the loadcell brake

that requires a lot of force. I added some sort of hooks on the seat console that connects to the wheelstand, now everything stays in place^^

As a gadget I added a little 5" Dashboard with LEDs on the wheelbase from a very nice polish dude who sold it on Etsy for a fair price.

Due to the neat weather I don't play a lot these days but this kind of stuff usually gets more expensive during autumn/winter.

We’re still running the TS-XW but did upgrade the pedals to the T-lcm’s with the apex mod on the brake pedal. Works really well.

Bolted to the TR8 it’s all reasonably solid, with only a tiny bit of flex on the pedal plate under very hard braking. Not noticeable while in use, but can see slight movement if you watch the plate.
how are you finding the direct drive wheel?

I like the feeling DD a lot, got the McLaren V2 whee for it and an 8nm PSU (via Aliexpress, sorry Fanatec^^).

The force is pretty impressive,  I set the ingame FFB in ACC to 75% to avoid clipping but it's still pretty strong.

I have this "budget" mod on my brake with a slightly different constellation:
