Fabia Transplant (1.8 turbo octavia engine)

Featured Replies

Hello ppl i'm josef. I am new here and i am on behalf of my friend Matthew that dosent have a pc and would like to ask some questions regarding a transplant on his Fabia 2002 modelfrom 1.4ltr ??Mpi to the octavia 1.8ltr turbo 20v engine.

bdw we are from Malta.

After looking around on the internet on such engine transplants we decided to ask some help to start this project and keeping in mind that we are going to retain the fabia's dashboard working with no foreign mods.

1) Is the octavia 1.8 turbo ecu compatable with the fabia factory connecting plugs and dashboard warning lights?

2) Must we keep the original factory mountings for engine and gearbox mounts?

3) Must we use the octavia drive shafts and spindles or we can retain the fabia items?

any other help will be much appretiated.

Your best bet would be to try and get an engine , driveshfts and wiring loom from a seat Ibiza with the 1.8t.

You won't be able to use the standard wiring loom with an octavia engine and the driveshafts you have will almost certainly be wrong.

just buy an ibiza cupra and save time and money then put your money towards some big bhp mods.

You also will need the instrument cluster from the donor car, as all the immobiliser features works through the instruments - suspect you'll need the ignition barrel and key too.

Unless you can find some form of stand alone engine management, you're going to really struggle - even more than I did with my relatively simple conversion.

As usual Hellfire totally misses the point.

get a S3 or TT engine they are more powerful and just as much work.

if you can read czech then fabicclub.cz has a few 1.8T fabias on it.

More work to fit an S3/TT engine due to the K04 turbo, will need special downpipe etc to be made.

Best way around the immobilizer is to have it removed from the engine ECU, that way you could use your standard dash cluster.

As usual Hellfire totally misses the point.

As usual RallyRed along with others on this forum are pendantic shíts.

WHAT IS THE POINT IN SPENDING ATLEAST £8000 PUTTING A 1.8T ENGINE INTO A CAR WHICH WOULDNT EVEN BE INVENTIVE, NOT PARTICUARLY QUICK UNTIL TUNED, YOU'LL NEED NEW SUSPENSION, GEARBOX, BRAKES, ENGINE, DRIVETRAIN, WIRING, DASHBOARD ANY LOTS MORE. JESUS CHRIST, JUST BUY A FREAKING FAST CAR IN THE 1ST PLACE OR ONE WHICH HAS SOME TUNING POTENTIAL, .

A few people seem to have a problem with Hellfire and I can't understand why tbh?

Neither can I, but tbh mate I won't own a Fabia for much longer (if I get my new job --> company car) and I can kiss goodbye to Briskoda :(

One question, if I may; why have you "tweaked" your car? Based on you penultimate post, why didn't you buy a faster car to start with?

As for the guy doing the 1.8T transplant; what do you know about the tax regime in Malta? New car prices and the import duty?

Skodish, good luck with your transplant, I hope it goes as well, if not better, than Jason's conversion

There is a difference between spending say

Big difference between tweaking and ripping apart and rebuilding.

Hellfire, I agree with you completely - if it's just for the 'I've done it myself' factor then fair one, if it's for the performance then it's silly.

I'd imagine it's for its uniqueness, the "I built that" factor rather than pure performance

In total I have spent £970 to change the alloys, remap the car and sort out the suspension, including green filter, pd160 intake and a retro-fit of cruise control. Insurance group 9 and cheap road tax & the diesel factor makes bhp & improvement per £ is money well spent IMO. An engine transplant including pretty much everything else isn't. I have no idea of import tax etc in Malta, but it's not going to make more than a few ££££ difference on what could potentially turn out to be nearly £10k of work.

Throwing huge sums of money at a car like that makes no sense to me especially when there is something so similar to the end result (an Ibiza FR) readily available

I agree completely

, appreciated.

If people were happy with their lot and sat around content with it we'd still be living in caves and dragging women around by their hair.

Fair comment - it is an expensive way of going about things but some people pay thousands for a ****ty old stamp.

Whatever floats your boat.

GreenLight don't charge for modifications to the car hence the insurance group still remains 9.

Before you spit words Mr Hellfire you have to understand whats behind. We live in a very small island where fast cars aint cheap to buy neither to import. Taxes here are very expensive to COMMON PPL.....& we are common ppl!!! In England as far as I know its much more cheap cause you can buy localy fast cars which in Malta is very rare to find.

In Malta there is only one Octavia 2.0ltr turbo.......so what is it compared to your country where sales are much bigger and donor cars are much more available at VERY good prices.

Well registering the engine on the car aint expensive and difficult. You just pay 95/100 sterling annual licence on an 1800cc engine ( over 1800cc > 2000cc 160 sterling, over 2000cc 300 sterling approx) and there is the insurance cost which is the headache.

And for those who helped tnx a lot and we will keep posting with more queries in d future.

Best of luck mate.

If the question was "Would modding be a cost effective mod" then i would have agreed with Hellfire.

But as the questions was "what bits would I need to do this conversion" then I will furnish you with all the help I can give.

I am embarking on a 1.8T project myself shortly, im buying a cheap base to start with and can source the bits cheap enough. As im dong the work myself outlay will be minimal. But cost isnt everthing, sometimes we just need to do these things to prove to ourselves that we can do them.

Also another helpfull hint might well be that im pretty sure you can use the gearbox, driveshafts etc from a 2.0 Fabia for a 1.8T conversion, this should help a fair bit.

A nice piccie for you,

Under the bonnet of a new Polo GTi.

ibiza 1.8T (180)cupra is in group 11.... interestinly the 130pd tdi FR is group 7....

Well, as you're in a different position to most UK people, I wish you nothing but luck with this. BUT, the best starting point (and I regret not doing the same) is source out a COMPLETE smashed up wreck of the car you wish to use th running gear from. Then you have ALL the bits you need, and stuff you may not have been planning to need but actually DID (like I did :o)

If you can get the wiring laid OK from another car, then it sounds like a decent plan. You may even find you have hidden bonuses (such as perhaps elec windows, traction control, air con - stuff like that. :D)

Oh, and as for insurance with no extra premiums for mods... Mine's still group 6. :P

If you have detailed enough knowledge and wiring diagrams there is no need to change all the internal looms like Jason did, all you need to do is seperate the Octavia wiring loom up and mix and match to the Fabia loom.

I think everyone is getting a little too het up here guys. Another way to look at this is the fun factor as well as the personal satisfaction of being able to say "I did it"

Skoddish, I can't really offer any advice but wish you good luck with the project, and that I hope you post back and keep us informed on how things go.

A 1200kg Fabia + seeing the numbers some of the chipped Octys are putting out interests me somewhat!

Re: what Lummox said about using 2.0 gearbox and driveshafts, does this mean a 2.0 Fabia is probably the most ideal car to use as a platform for a 1.8T install?
