Front Assist Warning Light

Featured Replies

Hi. Hoping someone here can help me.

Had my Karoq for about a month now but over the past few weeks a red symbol has appeared accompanied by a warning sound. Happened a couple of times and then four times today! It’s the front assist warning light but in red.

Reading comments here, it seems that this symbol is supposed to appear when the car thinks you’re going to hit something and applies the brakes automatically. There’s no breaking (and nothing to hit!) so I’ve driven on regardless.

Is this right? Is front assist being over-sensitive? Could there be a fault in the sensors? Will England beat Scotland in the Euros? So many questions!

Any help greatly appreciated.

Well it certainly doesn't sound right! I've never experienced the Front Assist coming on in mine.

You should be able to adjust the sensitivity in the menu system (look for driver assistants) but as you've only had it for a month I'd suggest you contact the seller quickly. (I'm assuming you bought it from a Skoda dealer).

Thanks.

I did adjust the sensitivity as I was trying to work out how to use the adaptive cruise control but it still happened even on low sensitivity (although not as often).

I bought from a VAG dealer so will be contacting them tomorrow - just didn't want to look stupid if the dealer wiped clean the sensor and everything was then ok!

I’ve encountered the red flash on a few cars.

Turning down the sensitivity has cured what I call false alarms.

There are always circumstances involving other vehicles, centre islands and street furniture that will alarm the sensor occasionally.

I’ve never truly tested it by trying to run into something

A really dirty or leaf/snow covered sensor usually gives you a dash warning to say it’s stopped working.

Was it raining?

Had this happen to me last Friday in bad weather. The red warning triangle came up and also the car symbol with “funny” lines at top and sides.  They went away a few miles down the road.  I took it as a temporary problem caused by the weather.

Like BoxerBoy I have experienced it a number of times but it always involves the vehicle in front turning right using a filter lane. The system seems to think I'm about to hit the car that 'was' in front as I go up the inside of them. The only other time I have had it triggered, I was driving down a narrow country lane and there was a large bush / tree over hanging someone's garden wall. That triggered the warning also. It goes as quickly as it appears.

It would appear to be a bug in the system triggered by something external. In 2.3 years of ownership it has flashed up about 4 times briefly in all cases for no apparent reason so I took no notice. I am afraid it is just par for the course with these over clever cars, too many bells and whistles to fail sporadically or long term. I would change the Karoq for some other make but they all seem to be over burdened with questionable so called enhancements.

Recently moved our bees to a remote spot that involves driving down a lane with long grass in the middle. This always overloads the system and up comes an orange warning and it turns itself off. Restarting the engine at the end of the lane clears the problem. Turning round in long grass or manoeuvring near tall nettles often slams the brakes on so violently it's just like you have hit something.

Absolutely, first time it happened to me i nearly had a heart attack. When you know you are going to hit something your mind is prepared for the crunch. When you know for sure there is nothing to hit and a tall weed slams the brakes on the pulse rate goes through the roof..

Very true 'vegit8' - not unlike when a passenger (wife) suddenly (at a busy junction or roundabout) blurts out something such as 'Look at those flowers, aren't they nice?', but the damage is done 'Look' is enough to set my heart rate higher 'cause in that nanosecond before the flowers are mentioned I've been swamped with a vision that I've missed something!

I've had this happen in a few different vehicles including my Karoq. I sometimes think even a bug close enough would set it off.

I also think, especially this time of year when said bugs are about and flying themselves into the fronts of our cars, their remains aren't helping the poor sensors and as such I try and keep the sensor block clear of insect remains. Whether or not it makes any odds in reality, I'm not sure but it certainly can't hurt.

Keeping the roadside clear of signs though...

I have never worked out how something so light as a bug manages to get squished by a car. You would think that the airflow would push them up and over things like bumpers and windscreens.

For the same reason rain and snow doesn't.  The airflow isn't forceful enough to counteract the momentum.  And if you want a fuller explanation you have to do a Master's degree in physics.
