Aussie RS owner with software problems

They just got back to me. Skoda have agreed to replace the (H5?) control unit which basically is responsible for all of the infotainment system. So I get my car back as soon as I can get over there to pick it up.

Unfortunately we are looking at a 3-4 week delay while the part is shipped from Europe. Not thrilled about the delay but I suppose this puts any talk of refund or replacement on hold for a month.

Luckily the car drives ok and Android Auto will keep me amused in the meanwhile.

Today, 8.5 weeks after the part was ordered,  I got the call from Skoda. My car is booked in for next Monday to have the infotainment control unit replaced. They have offered me a loaner car for the d

And here goes my theory.   Till now all cars without a letter at the end of the device part number had software version 16xx.

  • It's interesting that updates are available. I've checked the Skoda update portal which says my car is up to date.   My software versions are attached and identical to yours.

But now there is a Covid-related lockdown in place and picking your car up from the dealer is not an authorized reason to leave home, so the car must remain at the dealer for another 2 weeks. Good thing I have that other car - not that there is anywhere to legally go to.

Jesus! That should give them enough time to sort it out! My rear doors wouldn't open this morning from the inside, had to restart and stop engine  then it worked , also the smart AC functions such as warm feet just could not select. I'm so annoyed by these little things which detract from how good the car is to actually drive

It turned out that the dealer resumed operation in a Covid-safe manner on Wednesday and was able to send a driver to collect me so I now have my car back as we await the arrival of the replacement infotainment system control unit from Europe.

One thing I noticed today is that all of the software updates seem to have fixed one of the quirks of the car that I had thought was an intentional "feature".

I had set the fan to maximum while I was driving and, after parking for 30 minutes and leaving it locked, when I restarted the car the fan continued at full speed.

The Sync setting, though, did not restore - which is normal for these cars, unfortunately.

Just as I thought I was immune to the problems faced by many others on this forum - other than the 3 I mentioned at the start of this thread - today I experienced a new one:

I had left the car in a car park and I came back an hour later. I needed to reverse out of my spot but there was no reversing camera.

Once out of the spot I pressed SET so I could go to the menu to turn off Auto Start/Stop and the infotainment system went back, followed by a reboot, all while driving.

Once it came back everything seemed to be working normally.

First time I have seen that in 6 weeks and 1100kms.

I hope I do not see it any more frequently.

When leaving work the other night the car started alarming that front assist was not available.

Like any modern computer, the fix was to turn it off and back on again

I hesitate to winge too much though as the tyre pressure monitor saved me $300 yesterday by telling me the rear left tyre was flat.

Strange. I also had the TPM go off in the first week. And it turned out that the tyre was actually had a puncture.

And you car is new too.

I haven't had a deflated tyre for years. I wonder if this is another systemic thing?

I don't think so.

Well... unless you had a piece of metal sticking out of your tyre also ?

;)

Thinking about my earlier post, being that I had no idea of the flat, the car potentially saved me $600 if you factor in potential damage to the rim.

While I am waiting for the new Infotainment control unit to arrive and, hopefully, fix the faults I reported, I am continuing to drive a little (can't go anywhere except to the shops or to the park to exercise  while we are in lockdown).

I noticed a new strangeness today. I have connected to Android Auto but today I went back to the DAB radio which was playing when I turned the car off. When I returned an hour later and started the car, instead of the radio playing Android Auto started playing the last track I had been listening to there. I expected it to stay on DAB. I thought the media system was either doing:

a) Skoda radio/media and navigation

OR

b) Android Auto (or Apple Carplay) media and navigation.

How do you others think this works? Can you revert from Android Auto to Skoda at will? I looked in the menus but cannot find anything.

And a similar issue that I think I saw earlier in the week. I thought I paused the media playing in Android Auto before I turned the car off. But when I started after an hour the music started playing. Is this (play/pause state) yet another thing the infotainment system is incapable of remembering?

I'm not sure what it's supposed to do. I'm also using Android auto. It connects wirelessly but sometimes just disconnects which is annoying. Sometimes it's fine..🤔

Within Android Auto on your phone there is a setting that says "Automatically resume Media". My understanding is that if this is selected then it will do what you say, otherwise it should start up but not play music.

Mine is due to be delivered 8am Monday morning, so can't check myself to confirm.

Since it is now 4.5 weeks since the part was supposed to be ordered I contacted the service rep today and got back a reply:

"Thanks for reaching out. As you can imagine we are seeing some delays with back order parts given the covid restrictions affecting delivery services. I am yet to receive the new control unit for your vehicle. Please know that once I do have the part I will be in touch to have the vehicle in to perform the repair."

So it could be a long wait.

I use CarPlay and the behaviours I see are that the car resumes playing whatever was playing when I turn it off. So, if Spotify music via CarPlay was playing, it will resume when I next restart the car. Alternatively, if a DAB radio channel, then that resumes on restart even though CarPlay reconnects automatically.

Similarly, whatever I had displayed on the screen (eg Vehicle Status) will show again on restart - with CarPlay/Spotify or DAB radio playing in the background, if it was when turned off.

All seems to work as I’d expect.

This is on the loan car, an Octavia 4 SE FE 1.0e-TEC Estate. It’s so long since I last drove my own SEL FE that I can’t remember what that did - apart from a load of weird stuff…

Could you please explain what CarPlay is and how to access it?

It is the Apple equivalent of Android Auto. So only for those with iPhones.

I know this is almost 6 weeks ago now but did that inability to use the smart AC functions persist? I find that the "warm my feet" function is not available for a minute or two until the car is warm enough to do it. Could it just be that?

Yes , I noticed that the car needs to have been running for a bit to became to use that smart function, but I drove to work for 15 mins and it still wasn't available the other day. My Toyota Corolla 2006 heater works like a furnace after about 2 mins. Go figure!

Great. Really eager to find out if your issues will be gone. Please let us know if any of your system data will change.

Three months after I first reported the problems and 9 weeks after they offered to replace the relevant hardware, I am a happy customer again.

My RS Wagon spent today at the dealer. They supplied me with an Octavia 110TSI Mk3 Wagon for the day.

They replaced the Infotainment control unit and updated the software to 1803.

That fixed all 3 of the problems.

To remind you, they were:

  1. Voice control never completes start-up.
  2. Inbuilt satnav spoken instructions do not work.
  3. Inbuilt maps do not show speed limits

Naturally, since the system was reset, I had to re-pair my phone, re-enter my home address, set my favourite stations etc.

In the process I noticed that the device appears to my phone on Bluetooth with a different name. It used to be something like "My Skoda nnnn". Now it is "My MIB E929".

So perhaps that confirms that the device changed significantly.

Anyway this may provide a bit of hope for those of you who have strange faults. Perhaps instead of hanging your hopes on software updates the cause may be something more basic - a faulty module that needs replacing.

Now I look forward to trying out the voice control. I will probably start another thread to document what I learn since it does not seem to appear fully anywhere else.

Just got the invoice. As well as stating that the control unit was replaced it states that two campaigns were carried out:

  • 69BN Campaign
  • 90Q9 Software Update campaign

What I read it looks to me the biggest problems are with the hardware and not the software.am sure there has been a few people on here who have mentioned this before.as they say skoda are looking at the cheapest way in getting around the problems people have.it is easy to see why imagine the cost of changing all the hardware in the cars already built.youwould think it would run into many thousand even millions to do it.just hope when I get mine the problems have been sorted.
