Speed camera warning request.

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm the proud new owner of a 2018 Octavia 1.5tsi SE-L act DSG I’m very happy with the car but I miss the audible warning for speed cameras that I had on my Mazda 6 and I know you can add this feature with a sd card update but being old and incompetent I’m wondering is there anybody in the Southport/Merseyside area who could do this for me for a realistic fee, I’m planning a trip down to Spain and Portugal and feel this could be very useful.     Thank you Dave.

That being said, I think the warning sound is pretty quiet so I'm not sure how useful it is...

I assume you probably have an Amundsen headunit so you won't be able to add these to the normal nav SD card. You'll need to use a second SD card in the other slot :)

Depending on exactly how "old and incompetent" you are, you could try using an app on your smart phone if you have one.  I use "Tom Tom AmiGo" and "Waze" for this exact purpose.

+1 and little bit late

i prefer Waze for daily routes and Waze+GoogleMaps for abroad trips

Just before Covid we had a trip to the Alps and before the trip I spent not inconsiderable time and monies sourcing and installing European camera data onto the Karoq.
Well, not a complete waste of time but I wish I hadn’t bothered - very poor coverage / with out of date intel.

Bottom line was, I came home to find a couple of German speed tickets and a Green / Environmental fine on the mat………..and I thought I’d driven well careful with my eyes wide open!

Of course, dare I say it...you could always stay within the speed limit, removing the need for these fancy warning doodaz.

This, of course, is the ideal solution... but I reckon every driver does, or has, exceeded the speed limit. Sometimes without realising it's crept up.

A warning could be useful if only as a reminder to pay closer attention...

Do you know what the speed limit is at all times? Did you know that the speed limit on a road can change without the change being signposted?

That has become a regular thing here in Nottinghamshire - roads that have been 40mph for decades are quietly reduced to 30mph overnight - none of the fair play 'NEW SPEED LIMIT IN FORCE' notices of days gone by.

Another ruse that's creeping in around here is the moving / extending of village 30mph limits a few fields out of the actual village.............

Yes I do...and so should everyone else.

No I did not.

Somehow I don't believe that you do know the speed limit at all times, since you didn't know that a speed limit can change without the new limit being signposted. (Hint, the existence or otherwise of a 30mph limit is dependent on the existence or otherwise of lamp posts, and on their separation where they exist).

In an ideal world, yes, we would all be able to keep fully alert to our speed at every moment and what the speed limit is at every moment, but in the real world we are bombarded with information whether that be pedestrians or cyclists about to position themselves in your path, road signs which are there to be seen, or adverts designed to get your attention.  Personally, I would rather watch out for pedestrians etc. than every single speed limit sign.... So if there is technology available as a backup, then why not use it.

The UK NSL is 60 mph for passenger cars not towing unless another speed is posted then that speed must be posted in repeater signs at specific distances.

As the max speeds change there is a sign telling you and when the speed goes back to the NSL there is a sign clearly showing that.

I am still managing to be 3 points away from a ban having points on my licence for knowingly breaking the speed limits posted and doing it where i happened to be caught doing it.

PS.

The Speed is on signs at the side of a road and should easily be recognised as a Speed Limit. (Some get covered by hedges / trees / mould and the RD leave them like that), maybe also the speed is painted on the road like some 20mph speed limits in towns and even on trunk routes now, and then they can be on overhead gantries, but the law requires that the speed limits / restrictions are clearly posted, permanent or temp max speed limits.

Where it is the NSL then that need not be posted, you are supposed to know the NSL in the UK for the vehicle you are driving.

A good few will be getting a NIP from going too quickly here.

There is a clearly marked 40 mph area before you come into the 30 mph but many ignore these signs.

I was doing a very safe speed and allowing for my stopping distance on the pavement.

Root- any 40/30/20 ( and sometimes 50)- I always keep inside the figure on the "lollipop" . It also helps to recognise "cash ready" areas ,where the WRI will make complaints, and keep an eye on local papers to find new "cash generator sites". I'd expect to see a new rash of enforcement coming soon as the WRI start spouting and the speed folk find funds are drying up. Never forget, it's not all about road safety, but finding employment for all those blokes put out to pasture as HMG UK LTD couldn't afford to employ.
