Oil consumption

Featured Replies

2011 Skoda Roomster, with 152,000 km. It has used 2.5 litres of oil in the last 10,000 km. So it works out at 250ml per 1000km.  Is that normal for the age of vehicle? It has just passed it's NCT (MOT) last week, so assume engine is running ok. I only bought it 12 months ago as a stop gap, but it's grown on me and I'd like to keep it for another year if the oil consumption is not something abnormal.

What engine is it?

1.2tsi  It had a new timing chain kit in 2014

In March we bought a same mileage and age 1.2 TSI as yours and it does seem to use oil, I would say at about the same rate.

We have had two 1.2tsi engined cars of that vintage (different Skoda models) and have gone to 150,000 miles/240,000 km (and still counting) without any major oil burning issue. Maximum of about 0.5 litres in 10,000 miles, often less.

Both however have had broken PCV valves, a small black plastic valve plugged into the rear of the cam cover toward the gearbox end. They then hang down on the rubber pipe that connects them to the filter airbox. The small unoccupied hole in the cam cover then blows oil out, which leads to smells and oil covered sump. However the quantity involved is small and unlikely to be 2.5l per 10,000 km unless you drove hard.

Its a very common fault, but be careful when you replace the valve as the broken bit of the valve is still lodged in the grommet in the cam cover. Try to recover that bit before pushing in a new one to avoid a big piece of hard plastic tube finding its way into the camshaft/valve mechanism which has the potential for major damage.

Some pictures here to show you where to look. You don't need to remove anything to see it .....

Thanks for your advice with regards a possible PCV valve problem. Now the thing is there is no smell of oil, and certainly no dripping of oil anywhere. But I am going to check it out, thanks for your help and time.

Thanks for that post Xman, it looks like I need a new valve.

After an inspection this morning it appears that there is definitely an oil leak from that valve. It doesn't seem that bad, but it definitely needs changing.

Many thanks Xman.

Changed the valve this evening, it clearly it had failed sometime ago. Unfortunately the broken part was no where to be seen presumably ingested into the engine sometime ago.

I had to have mine done also. I put it down to the air filter being exchanged at a dealer service. When you lift the airbox cover up to reveal the filter which is attached to the cover it puts strain on that pipe and there is no give so leverage is put onto that pcv valve and breaks. Bad design.

Oil consumption seems a bit random? My mums Ibiza with a CBZB (1.2tsi 105hp) engine uses a lot more oil than my 85hp Roomster, that's done 130.000km while the ibiza is 70.000km?

My car had a broken PVC valve when I got it, and the only difference after fitting a new one was less oil smell from the engine bay.
