Octavia MK3 1.4 TSI Remap

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've been looking around online as I fancy getting my 1.4 TSI remapped. It's the 148 bhp version so there's a couple of options that should take it up to 180-200bhp & 210-240ft/lb.

The nearest tuner to me is an APR place, but there are Revo places slightly further out. I've been quoted an increase to 200hp by the APR dealer for £399 which sounds ideal.

I'm wondering if anyone's had either a Revo or APR map done on this car before? Anything to watch out for etc? This will be my first time getting a car remapped so I'm in a bit of no-mans land as far as experience goes!!

Thanks

Tom

First rule of mapping: don't chase the peak figure. A map that gets you a high top end may stress the engine more than one with 5-10hp less. You hardly ever take the engine to that peak revs so it's a wasted effort. By all means if the higher map offers other features that you like then go for it. Especially the likes of APR and Revo. They are well known.

The curve shape is the most important bit. You are looking for a gently increasing smooth line for hp and a similar smooth line for torque. Obviously you won't be able to spot those things on yours until after the map but the company should be able to offer you an example plot.  Where the lines cross before and after is also a good indication of how the new map is improved. Hard to compare between companies as the scale could be different on the axis but a before and after comparison should indicate a good gain.

I figure even a 20% increase would put me in the 160-170's which would be a big jump. I'd rather keep it to that point if its going to stop the engine going pop. Fair point on the maps too, hadn't thought of that.

I'll get back in touch with the firm I was speaking to and double check its an APR map, I'm just wary of getting a map slapped on it and something goes wrong.

Have you considered Superchips Bluefin? They do excellent maps and quote about 178bhp for the 1.4tsi, which is a more realistic figure to expect.

Check out the warranty for APR, Revo etc., as they effectively have guarantees around services and issue management if it gives you any peace of mind. Going direct to the supplier (and/or calling them up first) is also recommended, so you can ask any questions to them.

I had a Shark (now Racingline) map uploaded remotely via a tuner garage years ago, with the only issue being a tripped 'EMS' light. Racingline honoured investigating the issue, sorting it out for free in Milton Keynes, and generally being brilliant and really informative during the whole process.

I hadn't, I'll look into them now, thanks.

The warranty with APR does seem good, around faults with their maps causing issues etc. I'm assuming since it's a fairly common engine with a fairly common map that there's no issues with the map otherwise it would be all over the internet.

The garage I'm looking at looks like its doing good work and comes highly rated online, may just give them a ring though. With them being local it does make it easier than getting to Manchester or further away if something goes wrong.

Don't forget insurance.

I ran it past my insurance the other day and it went up by a couple of pound a month. Perks of being over 30 rather than the fun days of being young & paying 2 grand a year for a Corsa!

I presume it's a manual gearbox, certain DSGs won't take much extra torque, the vRS has a different DSG from the lesser models.

@themanwithnoaim ran a DTUK box on his 1.4tsi DSG for a few years with no problems.

His average 30mpg consumption was confirmation of his 'drive it like you stole it' approach.

The turbo is relatively small to boost low down torque and that aspect is accentuated by a remap according to 'tmwna' so there was little benefit in revving to the redline.

I know he moved onto vehicles more appropriate to his driving philosophy so we haven't heard much from him lately.

@FlyingGecko

Octavia vRS certainly do have different boxes as in wet clutch DSG's rather than DQ200's as fitted to 1.4TSI & all other front wheel drive VW Group engines with no more than 192 ps or 250 Nm.

The Polo GTI 1.8 TSI from 2015 has 192 ps and 250Nm with the DSG but 320Nm with the Manual.

PLenty with Mk2 vRS Fabia (these have DQ200 DSG only) which are 188ps & 250Nm have them remapped to Stage 1 and get 200ps Plus and over 300 Nm and have run them for years,

some even go Stage 2 with a standard DQ200, and some fit uprated clutch packs and modified software.

Thanks e-Root, that's the most comprehensive and informative post I've seen anywhere detailing the DSG boxes across the Skoda range.

It clears so much of the fog.

PS

The REVO Stage 1 or 2 on the 1.4 TSI / TFSI 132-136 kW Twincharger engines was really poor.  Not a good upgrade and REVO were in denial.

The APR map was much better.

Not so sure on a Euro 6 150PS 1.4 TSI being taken to 200ps.

?

Are APR saying this is on 98 ron?

when actually it would be 97 ron or 99 ron Super Unleaded as nobody in the UK sells 98 ron and have not for about 8 years now.

............................

I do not see where APR are listing the Euro 6 1.4 TSI  (Turbo not Twincharger) Stage 1 remap.

I see the Mk2 Octavia Euro 5 1.4 TSI listed.

http://onlyrevo.com

They are showing the 1.4 TSI ACT engines.

UK Warranties from Remappers / Tuning Box sellers in the UK is on their Product and Fitters Workmanship, not on an engine going pop.

The Warranties offered in other World Regions and the cost of the product can be very much more expensive because they are giving proper insurance against failures.

Read T&C's and exclusions very closely, even with Bluefin.

Kinda, there's a 250Nm torque limiter on 1st & 2nd gear but, 3rd throu to 7th is unlimited, my DTUK box got me to 323Nm

Hi Tom

you've got a relatively small turbo on the 1.4tsi which does its hard work before 4k revs therefore, look for a map that works best on the torque figure. If it was a choice of APR vs REVO I'd take revo every time, APR push the power hard & early EA888 engines did pop a few turbos. Being a less popular engine, I'm not sure how many remaps they've sold for the 1.4tsi & therefore, how much development has gone into the remap.

The DQ200 DSG torque limiter only limits in 1st & 2nd gear so, go for the torque map, the redline ain't the place to be running the 1.4. Only other thing you'll need is to upgrade the rear anti roll bar, more power will bring faster cornering & the rear torture beam suspension on your car WON'T inspire confidence.

Good luck & have fun🤣🤣🤣

Thanks to both e-Root and TNWNA, excellent DSG information above.

£399 for an APR map sounds suspiciously cheap. Best I can find for my Octy is £650 for APR and £700 for Revo. I can't be bothered at the moment at that price.

I have the 1.4lt 140PS version on a manual gearbox & had the revo stage 1-B remap which is for 98RON/99RON fuel...it will run on 95RON as an emergency as required..

The Bosch maps for these engines are 95RON with 91RON as an emergency...& we don't get 91RON, so basically the timing is NOT ideal for the UK!

They quote circa 190BHP & 312Nm....but its a way better curve & the car can tricky along at 800rpm no problems in a all gears & pick up....before it would virtually stall...plus the electronic wastegate is operating less so its quieter above 3000rpm...

Car should have been like this from the factory.

P.S. with the latest rules on E10 fuel, which requires the "main" unleaded to be 10% bio...super unleaded isn't required to be ..& remains E5 (5%) bio...

Tesco's momentum is the best widely available fuel for the best performance from any petrol engine & at only 5ppl more, it's worth it. Vpower has cleaning additives & therefore, runs at approx 1% less power, its also Fn expensive 😭😭😭

I've run vpower since it first can out up here circa 2002 (optimax)......I don't trust supermarket fuel since they got caught up in that fuel problem back in 2007...not that I ever used cheap supermarket fuel anyway...

For some very weird reason it's not listen under Octavia's, they only list the 1.0 and 1.2, however it is listed under the VW's, I believe its under the Polo or Golf?

Thats really handy to know. I know on the VW forums there were a few people getting the EA211 Polo remapped and seemed happy with it, although I dont know if there's any difference across the brands. And the rear had been a concern haha!!
