A host of problems to solve before MOT

Featured Replies

Right, wife has an '07 1.9tdi.   Dash looks like a bloody xmas tree.  I have been unable to clear any of the errors with my cheap handheld scanner, so they must need looking at, (ie: money spent)  again trouble is, she spends nothing on her car, aside from the legal requirements and putting diesel in it, so when the MoT comes up, muggins here has to cough up.  Been telling her for the last 2 years to buy a new pair of wipers.  She doesn't.  Anyway, rant over , back to the problems.

First up, airbag light, I assume it goes with my code of 01217.  I read about a yellow plug under the drivers seat.   Just had a mirror under there, I couldn't see a yellow plug.   So help there is appreciated, as well as with the following.

Secondly, tyre pressure light.  it was on, so with tyre pumped up, I press the button and it goes out.  Then, after stopping and starting the car, it comes back on.   So I don't understand what's going on there.

Thirdly, Traction control light is on, the one with the skiddy car symbol.  I did read a code of 00287, which I can only find as rear right wheel speed sensor.  Would this affect the traction control amongst other things?.....because of course....

.....Fourth, the ABS light is on.

Fifth.  Steering wheel light is on, in orange, or yellow if you like.  I had recently disconnected the battery to charge it as it went flat.  I also drove it round the block but it's still on.  I've checked fluid level, and it's fine.

That's pretty much it.  Kin modern cars , always something to fix these days with all these sensors and codes.

I had this problem with my Octavia and it ended up it was the rear abs sensors. Worse case in my case I may have had to replace the rear bearing with incorporate the abs rings also.

1 - No idea what this means, other than possible trouble. The airbag light is a latching fault light, which means you need to diagnose the actual fault, fix that, and then use something like VCDS or a dealership computer to clear the light. Also, without definite evidence that the fault is in a sidebag, I'd suspect the steering wheel bag or the clock spring.

2, 3, and 4 - These faults could well all be related, since the tyre pressure monitor and traction control both use data from the ABS sensors. I don't unreservedly trust cheap scanners to give real codes, but in this case I think it's pointed you to the correct corner of the car.

5 - Absolutely no idea!

BTW, smearing windscreen wipers should be an MOT failure in themselves.

Firstly I'd advice you to buy Carista Bluetooth scanner, I got mine for £24.99 on Amazon. You have to subscribe for around $10 or so I believe to use the app or you can download a cracked APK online(apparently).

The steering wheel or traction control can be easily fixed. You have to recalibrate the sensors. Here's how I did it.

With the car off, turn the wheel fully to the left and hold for 5sec then, recenter, then turn the wheel fully to the right and hold for 5sec.

Then drive around 10m is a straight line, stop and again turn the wheel fully to the left and hold for 5sec, centre the wheel then turn to the right and hold for 5sec then centre the steering wheel. This should clear the light.

Now I'm pretty sure this is what I did but I also found this solution online so the extract process maybe slightly different For example I can't remember if it matters whether the car is started of not when you begin this procedure.

You'll need Carista to clear the airbag light, the cheap scanner can't do this as they can't access the CANBUS modules.

The light will come on if any of the yellow impact sensor plug are disengaged and re-engaged but if you haven't done this then there is likely a fault in the system somewhere and you won't be able to clear the light till you get it fixed.

An ABS fault can cause a few other lights on the dash, I'd suggest you make sure each ABS sensor at each wheel is plugged in tight if this fails you've likely got a bad ABS sensor on one of the wheels.

Thanks blokes.  The internet continues to show me things.  I suspect the rear speed sensor is the key to to of the lights at least.  I will try AJ77s method of resetting the steering light, and risk looking like a right fool as I do so

Yes Ken, I would have thought they would have pulled her up on the wipers by now, perhaps my version of crap is different to their version of crap.

OK chaps.  the airbag light went out on its own earlier, so that's a good thing, a loose connection somewhere maybe.

The rest of the lights are still on.  I tried AJs steering wheel thing, it didn't work.  one theory I've read is that it could the angle sensor or something.  Is this in the steering column somewhere?  Just ordered a rear wheel sensor, so will do that job when it arrives.

I'll keep you posted.

All of the remaining lights, including the steering light are because of an abs fault, and won't go until the fault is fixed.

The steering light will have gone on when the battery was disconnected.

Turning the wheel left and right won't reset it as it also relies on the abs sensor data to do the calibration, which it can't do at the minute.

If changing the sensor doesn't fix it, then have a good look at the wiring loom from the abs module to the sensor in the hub.

It's not unknown for it to get broken and cause the same fault code.

Thanks Softscoop

The airbag light came back on again after a couple of miles.  It needs a scan with a proper scanner I think, to give me more of an idea as to what's what.

Where Sir, pray tell, would I find said wiring loom and abs module if sensor doesn't work?

You'd save yourself a lot of hassle if you bought Carista, it will pinpoint exactly where the issue is, such as Rear Left ABS sensor faulty.

Yeah, you're probably right.

Check the wiring in the driver door hinge behind the rubber. The crash sensor lives in the driver's door of the MK2 and a broken wire fires the airbag light. Normal opening/closing of the door wears through the wires.
