Updating the navigation maps ?

Tend to agree, if you wanted to make anything complicated the VW group certainly know how, I was also told that the maps would update OTA when I picked up my Karoq from the dealer, then after several months of nothing it became available as a download on the portal with the instructions on how to do it, so maybe the Kamiq will go the same way eventually, I must admit with how long it took to download on my PC I could never see how it was going to download sensibly via a built in sim card...

Even then it didn't mention that the little dialogue box would appear on the Portal screen stating that the download wasn't available and then left you to figure out how to get round it.

I perhaps find it more irksome than most because I have German heritage and was bought up to get things right. Maybe VAG farmed out the software programming to Outer Mongolia or Oz 😉.

  • I've waited until now to reply to see if my maps would update after running the car for some time. The answer is NO and I did do everything correctly. As for mountains and molehills, I don't thin

  • I don't think so, not yet at least - if ever. There was chatter here that Skoda is going to revert to self downloading maps via the Portal (I really hope they do !), so I asked the question via the on

  • When I dow nloaded only had the option of 2022, but noticed today they are both there, who knows what VW /Skoda are thinkin😉

We are all learning here and Im well aware that different regions have different things and we will never get OTA for anything in AUS as more than  75% of our country doesnt have cellular coverage due to its isolation.

Eg One property in West Australia has a notice on the gate   " Homestead 72km" and is 9142 square  miles. which is larger than Israel

Whilst it is somewhat complicated it obviously works OTA if set up properly in Europe and GB.

The problem is that dealers simply dont bother to keep up to date with this sort of stuff as in my case when I was told that I couldnt update the maps myself and only a dealer could do it.  Rubbish. Also the downloadable map updates on the portal were not announced in any way at all. I only found out by looking for MIB 2 maps for my Tiguan.  VW also told me it was impossible to do certain things to the Tiguan , which also proved incorrect.

Even away back when I bought a Passat they told me the same and they were proved to be wrong.     Dealer was amazed when I turned it off and mirrors folded in.   He said they cant do that .    Really, seems it does  LOL

In this case it seems that it was because OTA wasnt set up properly rather than anything else and that MIB3 is set for only that.

You can actually download the full specs for your car from ERWIN VW  or ERWIN SKoda and I have the 7 pages of whats in my Tlguan and will get around to doing the Kamiq. It tells you exactly what is in the car and what its set to .  Eg Aus models aircon is set to" Hot Country"

Hey,

It seems odd that you can only get map updates twice a year.

What if you don't drive the car during that month?

You are sure about it?

If that's truly the case, I find it a very flawed design.

They are released that month does not mean it’s only that month you only get updated. They don’t do all the car’s on the same day or month otherwise the servers will crash.

I don't have a Kamiq so you're both within your rights to tell me to bugger off, but just looking at your posts where seemingly the download works for one person but not the other, both who're driving the same car with same infotainment.   Apologies if I've missed this from your posts but are you both running the same software version on your MIB3 systems? It's just a thought but If both software versions are different, that may explain your differences.

Bugger off !!    Only joking, you missed the bit where I said we have different cars i.e. I have a Kamiq and Bryfly has a Karoq.

I also posted that my dealer reckons that some models have an embedded SD card and others don't, which is why Bryfly has been able to do a manual update and I have to wait for an OTA update.

I find it hard to believe that some models have an embedded SD card, but I don't know any different, so I have to believe what the dealer says.

VAG don't seem to be capable of keeping thing simple and keep muddying the waters.

My wife bought a used MK8 Golf this year and the VW dealer who originally supplied it told me that map updates have to be done manually. Last weekend I briefly bumped into an aftersales manager from another dealership, who told me that updates for the Golf would be OTA. The VW website says they should be done manually - God, my head hurts !!

There are different hardware models of the MIB3 obviously.  One is the Euro model which has an Esim and can accept OTA maps etc. The model we have in Australia  does not have an ESIM as we do not have Carnet here as I have explained the reasons why.  It seems that also Skoda may have enabled manual map updates  for some really new models in GB otherwise why would the maps be available to Euro VIN's as this is what defines how they distribute the maps.  Also EU can get Radio Station logos and we cant either...

I have the latest software on my AUS unit it seems   278???? I think  will check tomorrow

  • 5 months later...

I know this thread is over 5 months old but I just wondered if you had eventually managed to get map updates on the Kamiq using the USB C method.

I have just acquired a used Kamiq 1.0 TSI SE L  first registered Jan 2020 with the Amundsen MIB3 Infotainment System and am having the same problem. I have received conflicting advice as to whether it is possible in the UK to update the map using the unzipped file from Skoda Portal or if the only way is to use OTA updates. The free Connect subscripton period from the previous owner ended in Jan 2021. I am only interested in up to date maps, not the other facilities, so I was hoping to try to  get the 2022 map update manually before having to buy a new Connect subscription.

I have plugged in a memory stick with the unzipped files on and driven for 2 periods of 45 minutes but I'm still on version 19.1 for the maps. (Hardware H12, Software 0278).

Has anyone in the UK got thi update method to work yet?

Map-updates-mib3.pdf Here is the manual for mib3

Thanks for the link.

I have followed this manual and loaded the zipped files on to an 32Gb memory stick, plugged it into the USB C socket on the Kamiq. After driving for two periods of 45 mins nothing seems to have happened.

I will try downloading it again. I formatted the pen drive to exFAT as per the instructions. I might try formatting to FAT32 and see if that makes any difference.

You need to use exfat and do navigation route trajectories, then i think it will pull the new maps. Leave the stick in and every time you drive do a route and  after a week drives check the system navi if it changed.

No you cannot update with mc in usb-c maps updates automatically you need Skoda connect to get updates

Hmm..I have just driven for an hour with the unzipped map files on a memory stick plugged into the car's USB C socket. On checking the System Information screen the Navigation Database has changed from 19.1 to 21.7. I scrolled through the map and noticed there is a new roundabout showing where a new road is nearing completion. This was not shown in the 19.1 version. So looks like the update has worked OK.

Ah nice it is working :)
