Upgrade infotainment?

Featured Replies

Hi, I am looking to buy a Skoda Superb 2017 and I believe it is equipped with an older 2016 infotainment system. (See attached).

I am wondering how feasible is it to upgrade to the late 2017 / 2018 (onwards) system/screen?

Many thanks in advance. :)

2015 to 2017 gets the MIB2 unit. 1st pic

2018 to 2020 gets the MIB2.5 unit. 2nd pic.

2021 onwards gets MIB3 units.

U can upgrade from MIB2 to MIB2.5. Many have done it.

But u'll need to also change the unit in the glovebox.

If u do upgrade to the MIB2.5 unit, then this opens the door for u to upgrade to a digital/virtual cluster.

Awesome. Thank you. Just what I needed. :)

These upgrades are all tempting. 😁

Is the MIB3 unit compatible with a 2017 superb?

The bottom picture is a MIB2.5 Columbus unit, this runs at a different resolution to other units so you would also need to replace the 'brains' in the glovebox and deal with component protection, FeC/SWaP, coding etc...

The MIB2 Amundsen, MIB2 Columbus and MIB2.5 Amundsen all run at the same resolution and I believe the displays are a direct swap.

Based on that, you could swap the existing display for a MIB2.5 Amundsen display to give you something that looks like this without coding etc:

Obviously you should double check before buying ;)

The MIB3 units seem to be full of bugs and I don't believe they are compatible with older cars so I'd skip that for now...

Really, really helpful.

Thanks a lot.

Any ideas on whether the 2.5 is much better than version 2?

Good question, TBH I'm not super sure but I don't think there is much in it...

MIB2.5 came on MY18 cars (iirc) so adds a few things:

- virtual cockpit support

- skoda connect (won't work on retrofitted units)

- few UI tweaks including supporting colour changes with ambient lighting etc

- removing physical buttons for the 'glass' screens

@pab567 will be able to explain the differences in more detail. He can probably supply an appropriate screen and might even be able to 'rework' your MIB2 into a MIB2.5 if needed.

Happy to be corrected as I've only really experienced the MIB2.5 Amundsen :)

Cool. Cheers :)

Hi all.

I know I've jumped on this topic a little late but hopefully someone is out there who can answer.I have a 2016 L&K Superb and am really happy with it.Anyway this past Xmas I got an aftermarket head unit from.... Duh duh duh China.Long story short got the car booked in and was told later that day it wasn't compatible with the car due to the wiring. They said it was to do with the Canton system using optical cables that alas were not supplied with the unit. How disappointed was I.In the meantime the installation company were awaiting to hear from a supplier based in NL for an interface.I heard from them today and told me there is an interface that will do the job but it will cost over £900 for part and install😬.I've actually sent the unit back now as it was over £500 and with the install of the interface it's getting on for £1400.I'm now thinking of changing the MiB glove box and old button screen for the more aesthetically pleasing to the eye touchscreen. If anyone has done this or knows if they are compatible with Canton/L&K before I possibly phone Skoda or look into E Bay for a price or whether to cut my losses and stick with what I have.

Again I saw this thread and thought to tag onto it in the hope of some guidance/knowledge as I'm not good at this kind of stuff at all

Hope to hear guys.

I’d quite like to upgrade to a VC, but having “used” (that’s a laugh) a head unit with virtual buttons, they’re an absolute PITA. I also just can’t justify what, £1,500 for hardware - £700 of the VC and similar for the Columbus 2.5, plus fitting of course, so I’m guessing £2k all up? I can afford it, just can’t get my head around the cost-benefit.

I’m happy with the satnav as the regular updates are great and the Canton system sounds amazing for an OE system. I’m also a bit anal when it come to keeping a car BS = bog standard, which was one of the reasons why I chose to go down the Racechip route as opposed to a remap. Just my opinion of course, as I’d never have the brass-neck to tell someone they’re idiots for splashing out that that amount to upgrade their car.
