Lost fuel cap. Replacements?

Featured Replies

Hi,
Like the complete and utter fool I am, I lost my fuelcap. It was dark, the payment terminal at the petrol station was out of order and I had already opened the fuelcap and balanced it on the fuel door. Cue to my completely forgetting about that and driving off. Next day I find out about my stupidity and proceed to look along the road and at the petrol station. No dice. It's gone. So now I need a replacement but I'd really like to get an OEM one that is keyed alike to my old one so I don't have to add another key to my keyring. Is that even possible? I'd really love to hear any and every bit of advice! Cheers!

Buy a non-locking fuel cap, it's unnecessary having a locking cap inside a fuel flap.

Fuel flap locks with central locking so a non locking cap is ok, on all MK III Fabia's they use the non locking type, i don't think you will get the same type key/lock as your car anyway

My Mark 1's are all non-locking as well, like locking wheel bolts they're way more trouble than they're worth. You can just use one of those temporary caps to prevent evaporation while you get one ordered.

I was always leaving the fuel cap of my MK1 at filling stations, they were also my first port of call for a replacement, they all have a huge box of them under the counter!

On the 3rd or 4th time I found in the box a replacement with the correct screw thread but also a plastic retaining wire with a fixing eyelet on the end, clearly didn't work for the person that lost it, perhaps the fastener had never been fitted, I fitted & retained it to my filler neck and never lost the cap after that.

The Yeti has the filler cap on a retainer & I think the MK2 Octavia before it also.

personally I would not rely on the fuel flap as an anti theft device, far to easy to lever open............so for me go to the dealer and buy a new proper cap which would also have the lanyard fitted which is there to prevent exactly whats happened to you.

My MK2 has locking cap, on plastic cable. You sit it on the flap whilst filling. The flap its self has no security. It just opens if you-well, open it!

The main dealer could most likely order one but they may be reluctant. You might be able to get one of the more modern, "looks closed but the pump nozzle just pushes the internal flap" Type caps, to fit. That way, you never need to remove it again!

why would a dealer be reluctant to order a part ??

PS this is why the Fabia II HAS a locking cap as there is no central locking on the flap.

A dealer CAN order a numbered key for doors, ignition, etc but its a PITA so they are often reluctant to do so, preferring trying to sell you a non-matched locking part, if you see what I mean. I have had this issue in the past, on a Renault, where a lock was needed... They made a bit of a fuss about it but eventually order the proper coded lock. It cost a little more but had the benefit of offering a matching key so you had a spare. Had the same thing with motorcycles in the past, too. They would much rather just sell you the first lock/petrol cap, etc that came through the network or what is already "On the shelf".  Granted everything is now much more sophisticated and higher tech, regarding orders but I would still think that attitude may well exist

I can honestly say that over the years I have been driving / owning and fixing said cars including, volvo, vauxhall, peugeot, Alfa Romeo,  ford, Audi , Skoda, Bmw, VW , land rover I have never had a dealer "reluctant" to order a part.

Infact I would say I have built good relationships over the years with dealers and they are always happy to help, some especially my local Land Rover dealer used to order parts so we could have a look physically as the parts catologue  was not always clear with no pressure to buy if it was not right.

"your" the customer, if it's available, they should order, take your money and be done with it, if not go to another dealer imo. Personally I would never be fobbed off with an alternative to anything.

If thats the experience you have had, I feel for you or any other customers.

I very much nearly went to drive away with mine sitting on the roof of the car much to the amusement of the woman behind me in the queue at Sainsbury's!

Its pretty annoying that the mk1 has a locking fuel door but the mk2 doesnt. Bit of a pain having to unlock the fuel cap every fill but I find its a good reminder beforr you set off to make sure its on and locked.

I believe Classic models had a key based one, no? Mine doesn't even release properly (missing spring) but that's another matter.

My mk1 has a locking door but it was broke and wouldn't latch, fixed it since. Mine is a comfort though so has a few extras on it as standard, probably why it has the locking door.

Same here, the Ambiente is just the face-lifted Comfort anyway but mine does the opposite. :D

I think the problem with mine was that the cable had come out of where it goes into the fuel door, put it back in and it works.
