Gearbox help!

Featured Replies

Hey all!

I'm in need of some gearbox advice please, complete newbie here!

This is my first post so please accept my apologies if this has been asked elsewhere.

I collected my yellow (Aptly named buttercup by my 4 year old daughter) mk1 vrs in need of a little love on the 14th of October. I was assured by the seller (a mechanic) that she is mechanically sound. Test driven, deposit paid and super excited me. Fast forward, she's in need of a new gearbox.

She has a HDS gearbox currently. Would this HDS from a Seat Ibiza be compatible? Or would the gearbox mounting be different?

Thanks in advance!

Stace x

That will fit just fine, an Ibiza is exactly the same car (Polo 9N) under a much uglier skin.

Yes. The easy way to know if you're looking at a plug and play compatible engine or gearbox is to check that it has the same code (HDS in this case).

Thanks so much guys 🙂

I know it's a daft question to you experts, but I just wanted to make doubly sure.

Thanks again!

Me again, does it matter that this gear box is from an ibiza with a 74kw engine output when mine is 96kw? Thanks in advance!

It won't make any difference, the engines are physically identical so the gearbox will fit just fine, the final drive ratio might be slightly different but I doubt it.

Well, the final drive may be lower, but living where you do in Powys that might actually be an advantage.

If anything internal was different, it would have a different code, I think.

Thanks guys!

With a bit more digging I've been able to find one from a vrs which had done 71k. So that's gear boxed sorted I hope!

Another question, bodywork. Buttercup needs some rusty bits doing and a respray. I've been quoted £1350. Any recommendations in a 50 miles radius of SY21?

Not as such. Is there a VAG approved bodyshop in Welshpool or Shrewsbury?

Just a small question ! As a matter of my nosiness what areas of buttercup are starting to break out with rust ?

My car is as rough as a scrapyard Alsatian with various warwounds but I intend getting my bumpers fixed up and a patch at the back of the right side front wing sorted but while she is in we will get a good look through her and address any issues to try and extend the cars useable life. If I had a bit of an idea of favorite rust traps that would be great !

Yellow is my favorite color of Mk1 VRs.  My least favorite is silver and that's what mine is - well silver and dents.

Now you are going to have to put a picture of your car up

Buttercup has some surface rust on the sills, corner of the wheel arches, little on the bonnet edge and scuffs to her bumpers (which also need new clips, any direction on where to order bumper clips would be great guys 🙂). I don't think she's ever seen polish in her life, so is currently an array of yellows. I will attach some piccys later 🙂

I was super-duper lucky and able to get my hands on a set of se leather seats and door cards, which she's having installed in a couple of weeks. So if anyone is after a set of pretty decent cloths, I have some going 🙂

Going to tackle the leaky doors sometime this week, common issue I believe so watch out for this. Found some super fix vids on YouTube for this.

Hey, silver ain't so bad! I think silver looks sexy with the contrast of the black trims, and dents are character hey! Rusty pics to follow.

Skoda Parts catalog - ETKA Online, Skoda EUROPA, original Catalog Skoda EUROPA (7zap.com)

Try the link above - Its the parts catalog so just go in model and year then the subsection Body - My workplace seems to have it banned .... or Im doing sommit stupid !

When you get the part numbers ring the local dealer and see if they are still available - Getting one from a scrapper might be an option if you are stuck but bear in mind the seals will be the same age as your own

Your wee car looks really straight, rust  is only surface and you would be amazed what a power polish will do for a car ... You were black cat lucky with bagging the leather seats - Great that you are giving Buttercup the TLC she deserves - These few jobs you are doing will have her going well, looking well and will extend her life.

I love to see a car getting another chance - It breaks my heart to see a useable car being thrown away - At this stage the Mk1 Fabia has a very high cull rate so well done for saving one !

Rear door leaks are very rarely caused by the seals you can see.

As Wino says. It's most likely the door carriers behind the door cards. When you go to replace those door cards for the ones from that SE then whack a bit of sealant around the bottom of the door carrier and also up the rear edge.

And most of the way up the rear edge.

Edited my post to be sure I'm not giving out incorrect information. Thanks! :)

A short term help for the leaky door carriers is to make "curtains" out of old plastic bags or similar. Looks like someone already had that on yours at some point due to the tape gunk left on the rear door cubbies.
