Octavia suspension issues

Featured Replies

Bought my car new and noticed almost immediately how hard it felt driving over the smallest of potholes, even driving over uneven manhole covers felt like I had run over a house brick.  It isn’t just a hard feel, it’s also loud. Anyway, a few months on and the nsf is squeaking and and banging, even at extremely low speeds.
As anyone else had similar issues?

Could be your car still has transportation blocks installed. A few owners reported this problem in the past. This can happen when car isn't properly prepared before handover.

You can check your suspension by yourself. If this is  true, you will see some sort of plastic blocks inside the springs.

I had a similar thing and the blue blocks had not been removed during PDI. When I hit a rather large pothole one was broken and the noise got worse! You'll find them under the rubber gaiter.

After they were removed I thought the car was smoother and felt more hooked-up. Maybe just in my head but worth checking anyway

I've also got a squeak from NSF, had it checked at dealers as I thought might be a faulty bearing, they apparently couldn't replicate anything and fobbed me off. Any more updates on what this could be? I still hear it now and again.

Thanks guys for your replies. I took a look under the arches and found the above blue blocks forcing their way through the rubber gaiters. They have torn the outer gaiter to shreds. Took my car back to Skoda, with a handful of blue blocks I had managed to ease out of the coil spring. The service manager looked shocked and informed me that they wouldnt have left them in, lol. I told him that I certainly didn't put them there. They took the car in immediately and removed the remaining blocks and also booked the car in to replace the rubber gaiters. I can't believe the difference in how it drives now.

😀

Glad you got it resolved, but was your dealer really implying that you might have put them there yourself?!

My car also feels stiff and "crashes" over bumps and potholes, when I go over them I can feel the shock go through the whole car.

One day I was fed up with that and decided to look it up and found out about transport blocks, I was 100% sure it was that because of how car behaved.

Lifted the car up pulled the rubber shock gaiters and to my surprise found nothing. 20 000km later and I still don't know why the car is so stiff.

I came to terms with the fact that I have "sport" suspension and 18" wheels, and that is the cause of stiff ride. I also have DCC but that doesn't help much, in comfort car is too bouncy and "crashing" suspension feeling is even worse, normal mode is same as comfort but there is no bouncing , and sport is too stiff too drive on my crappy roads but that crashing feeling is little toned down.

When I was ordering my car in late 2020 , I was offered to test drive RS also with DCC and 19" wheels and I don't remember car being that stiff, but maybe I didn't pay much attention to that.

Not sure what to do now... I have first oil change coming up and was thinking about telling the dealer about that when they take the car in, but I am not sure they can do something.

Maybe it's not the car it is just me... 😄

I had the option of going for 18” wheels and stuck with the optional 17” choice as I wanted a bigger tyre for the potholed and speed bump roads here in West Yorkshire. I’m really glad I got the 17” as the ride is fantastic, comfy, takes the edges of the bumps but not wallowy. Miles better than the Golf I swapped it for.

I have a petrol vRS without DCC and the ride is fine. Reasonably compliant and quiet. No complaints and that's on the standard 19" wheels.

I would ask the garage to check the suspension at next oil change. I have DCC and in comfort mode you barley feel the road.

It could be just the way you feel the car, but since others with DCC and even 19" say it is a nice ride you should investigate further.
By the way, what tyre pressure are you using?

Now on winter set is somewhere between 2.5 to 2.7 bar. Year ago when I picked up the car from the dealer it was on summer tires and they were over inflated, I think they were around 3.0 bar.

Agreed. I have the same setup, the car is extremely comfortable.

do you run on 18 or 19" ?

This is question for who?

I run 19" in the summer and 18" in winter.

i ve ordered mine with 18" but considering doing the same: keeping the 18" with winter tire for next winter and buy 19 with summer tire.

I do a lot of km (60 000/year) so i don't want something too harsh !

yes my car will came with DCC

if you asking me, I said it in the post above.

I run 18" for winter and the summer.

I see lot of you are owners of vRS, so maybe car behaves differently with IRS (independent rear suspension).

My car is fitted with torsion beam.

When I was ordering the car I was sure it will be the same as with VW Golf, lower spec cars will get torsion beam, higher spec cars will get IRS.

But I was mistaken.

I've got the same set up as you @Sebastijan00, ie sport suspension, 18" wheels, DCC, torsion beam. I've never experienced a "crashing suspension feeling", but on the other hand I don't know exactly what you mean by that. To figure out If it's just you or something wrong with your car, maybe a test drive of an Octavia with a set up similar to yours at a dealer would be the best option.

If you want to try to figure out the problem (if there is one) on your own

where you will find the work shop manuals.

F.eks. removal of the transport locks (which you've already checked) is described on page 161 in the Maintenance manual.

I too have the 19"s on the VRS without dcc and the ride is very good, rides very smooth , my last car a Superb sportline had stiffer suspension

To fill you all on this.

Yesterday I was at my first oil change and I told them to check suspension and they found what I expected, nothing...

Test drove Octavia with sport suspension and without DCC, and the car feels more stable and comfy on the road.

For some reason that car is much quieter then mine. Had other person in the car that confirmed all that.

It feels like DCC is not working like it should on my car, but dealer won't do anything about it.

Was offered vRS in exchange for my car, and almost said yes because I am fed up with how my car rides.

What car do you have? I have an SEL with 17” wheels and I surprised at how good the ride is, it’s the best car I’ve had for our terrible roads where I live in the UK. I don’t have sports suspension or DCC

The suspension isn’t great for spirited driving though, bumps in corners knock it off line when driving fast but I didn’t buy it as a sports car.

Mine is Style that would be same as SEL in UK.

And this is the spec.

@SiWaitingHave you ever experienced cheap or faulty suspension ? That is what I meant by "crashing".

Nope, never. But if I had a faulty suspension or experience anything that could be described as "crashing", I would have my car towed to a garage and not be driving around.

I've driven quite a few Skoda Octavia MK4s by now and by far the worst experience I've had, related to the suspension, was the combination of sport suspension (no DCC) and winter tires (Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2, no studs) on 16" rims. The car felt dangerous to drive due to numb unresponsive steering (even in Sport mode) and a floating uncontrollable bouncing feeling from the combination of the suspension and the tires. No experience of something being faulty or "crashing", just a very unsuitable combination for the Skoda Octavia MK4.

Now I've got sport suspension, DCC, winter tires (Goodyear Ultragrip ICE 2, no studs) on 17" rims, and the ride is completely different compared to the above combination. The steering is responsive (when steering is set to Sport) and even when the DCC is set to max Comfort the ride does not take on the same uncontrollable feeling (and I never ride in max Comfort, Sport mode delivers the best overall experience imo).
