Enabling extended tail light/drl (combi)

Featured Replies

Hi,

The lit area taillights/drls on my 2021 estate do not extend into the tailgate area.  I'd like to enable a 'full width' lighting up of the taillight/drl (see highlighted area of the attached photo). The rear lights on the main body of the car have LED taillights/DRLs but filament reverse light and indicator bulbs.  The tailgate lights seem to be fully LED going by their appearance and the foglight.

I can't see any option to do it in OBD Eleven with the closest option being to enable Scandanavian DRLS.  Is it possible to enable the strip on the tailgate itself?  From what I've seen on the road here in Ireland, the saloons seem to have the area fully lit.

Sorry, I can’t help with your question, but I have an Irish 2017 2.0 D Combi Style, and the light area on the tailgate does illuminate. Not sure why the 2021 model doesn’t.

Thanks for the pic - that's exactly the way that I'd like mine to look.  I haven't seen any other 2021 Combis to compare with but I'll keep a lookout

just b mindful the tail lights shown in both those pics above r the pre-facelift versions.

a 2021 has different tail lights, like this.....

Maybe it depends in trim or even markets, but here in Ireland, 2021 Style level Combis don't have those newer style lights. I assume the OP's picture is of his own (2021) car, and here's another example:

@Legacy, I'd go as far as to assume that the body section of the lights should be lighting up. Since the car is new and obviously in warranty, maybe give your dealer a call and ask about it.

I know on the earlier models it depended on what trim level you had as to if the inner/extended/tailgate lights actually light up.  For example, my 2016 SE-L does have those bits light up, but I'm sure the trim levels below that don't light up.

@Legacy On your car, do those inner bits light up with dipped lights on?

@PhilDigs6259 I remember that on my 2016 saloon the inner part lit up but didn't on the spec below mine.  I had hoped that if it was trim-related that I might be able to upgrade using OBD Eleven

I've tried every combination that I can think of including day/night time, engine running/off and dipped lights/fog lights etc on/off but the inner part stays unlit.  My car seems to have been built in May of this year.

@GregorSamsa  Good idea - I might call in to the dealer to make life easier

In the UK the spec has to be SE-L or above for the inner part of the lights to work.

The Style trim in Ireland would be the equivalent to the UK's SE-L in terms of hierarchy, although there's differences. For instance Style doesn't get the full matrix LED headlights SE-L gets, and it gets 18" Anteres wheels instead of Zenith. So maybe the rear lights aren't the full version.

That said, as I mentioned above, my 2017 Style has those bits of the lights working - however, I'm not sure if that came as standard or was part of some option, as I didn't buy the car new.

End of the day - facelift or not, no matter the trim level, it is not something that can b simply enabled via VCDS or OBDEleven.

It's different part number. It's a different cluster/unit.

There r two versions - Basic and High.

This applies to both Inner (on the boot) and Outer units.

U need the High version to have the strip of the Inner light up.

Thanks for the replies.  My dealer came back to say that only cars with matrix LED headlights have that strip light up so as @JR RS has mentioned above, my car seems to have the basic cluster and the likes of the Sportline and L&K trims have the high cluster (in term of the Irish specification).

Hello!

If I install small LED lights inside that light up the strip, is it enough to run the wire from the outside? Or will it throw an error code?
@JR RS I tried to write privately but the forum wouldn't let me.

Unfortunately no, u can't run the wire from the outside taillights to power/operate the inner lights.

These lights r controlled by the BCM - not like the old days where u could simply tap into an existing wire.

I found an interesting solution! The license plate provides the power.

Leider nein, Sie können den Draht nicht von den Außenüberschüssen ausführen, um die inneren Lichter mit Strom zu versorgen/zu betreiben.

Why shouldn't this work if the PIN is in the inner light?

It's actually wired that way originally, if you check the wiring diagram. The small LED strip is attached to the outer light.

It's the same with the FL lights with the trim strip.

In some cases, it was possible to code it, but in others, the cable had to be removed.

I bought the full lamp today. It has LED strips everywhere. The 2big (left / right ) are Plugandplay, I powered the inner one with the power supply from the gray/yellow license plate. Perfect!

I will need a oroginal factory connector and fix both.

Thank you, that's all I wanted with the rear lights. I like this better than the latest animated headlight. I bought a clip and connected it.
