How much time do you warm-up your Felicia?

Featured Replies

So you are driving your Felly on roads like this?

Wow! Beautiful! But unforgiving for cars.

No wonder why you want better brakes, better cooling.

Your car must be in top condition.

No doubt that you are a good driver and owner.

You also ride a motorcycle on these roads too? That requires even higher skill level.

  • The best way to warm an engine is to drive the car. Idling slows warm-up, and potentially washes the bores with petrol.

  • Skoda recommends to start driving immediately but without going to town with revving. Normally the engine will warm up in about 5 minutes. Then you can go to rally with this small family car.

  • Was you parked with the car or exhaust tail pipe near a wall or building as the exhaust sounded a little as if there could be a minor blow or it may be that is just the normal sound and the recording

Fair enough, same as before then, for some reason I did not think the weather was as warm as usual I must have got mixed up with elsewhere.

My car was parked in a place where the sun has hit it hard, cold start less than a minute.

I parked the car in a place under a shadow from a block of flats, cold start 3:40

I don't know what to say, the German electronics will drive me crazy!

On the other hand, i discovered a fuel leak few days ago. 😲

Starting the car inside the underground parking i smell gasoline but few minutes later in the road this disappeared, this happened again some times but the mechanic said were the fumes from the exhaust.

I decide to take action, i opened the hood and i notice on the air intake manifold a brown spot, i turn the key to the 1st scale and i searched with my fingers the 2 pipes which go to the fuel pressure and i discovered fuel drops!

Although i was at work immediately run to a tool store and i bought 2 hose clamps and i fix it, since then no smell and no fuel drops.

How much fuel i have lost? I don't know because this may started days ago slowly and later get worst and this may affected more or less the fuel consumption.

I like the turns and not travelling in boring national roads with steady speed for long time looking far away in a straight line.

I like to drive in mountain roads full of turns like these:

In the past i was driver with 2 stroke 250cc and 4 stroke 400cc motorcycles and i have an 30 years experience (in this style of roads) in brake pads, brake discs designs, brake hoses, suspension adjustment, coolant types, octane gasoline experiments, weight balance and ''racing'' between other drivers in mountain roads (yes, i admit it sometimes was wrong).

I am a persist driver (not a Kamikaze style) and many times i have beat other cars higher HP than me because many times those drivers think that everything is like a straight line-press the pedal-lot of HP-i pass in front but when comes the time for consecutive turns often the ''lose it'' especially with braking.

PS: before all these i was an armoured vehicle driver in the Army.

A very small constant leak can add up to a fair amount but as you do not know when it started you cannot know, but it does not matter now anyway as long as you have stopped it.

Impressive.

I'll need brake related help in the future. Now I know who to ask. :)

This make me nervous because may ruined my calculations for fuel consumption but since it warm here and i don't use the car often now i have to wait.

As for Cold Starts, i think i have to give up the fight.

In motorcycles i have used plain-drilled-grooved-floated discs and as for brake pads the factory-soft-hard, for brake fluids DOT4 and DOT5.1, factory brake hoses and metallic etc but now are many more companies in the market, new models etc so ''i have lost episodes'' as we say here.

I'm residing on top of a hill. Nothing like your environment but I have to go down and up every day. I have a full set of new (close to 1 year old) front discs, front pads, rear drums and rear pads. After only using them for a month or two, the fronts have started squealing. It's annoying. So I got questions like is it normal for new brakes to start squealing this fast? Is there anything I can do to heal the squealing? Brake pad longevity on hills? Especially the rear because I can't check it without disturbing the rear bearing. And some other questions like that.

Update:

The Cold starts are getting ''weird'' which means i had the car parked for some days and at starting took about 3:40 to come from 1100 to 800 rpm, i went to work then back home, i park it for about 15 hours and when i get it it took about a minute.

9th Gas station pump test: 107,9 Km distance, 12,970 ltr fuel which means 12,02 ltr / 100 km or 23.50 Uk mpg (city traffic plus some kilometres in boulevard)

The fuel consumption get Worst than previous and this i think because:

1) i found that the lever (clapet) was stacked in closed position which means only hot was coming inside the filter box and not cool

2) i had a fuel leak which one night get worst so i smell it hard and took the proper measures but i can't calculate how much gasoline i lost drop by drop all the other days.

What's next? I will fix the clapet at opened position or i remove it permanently which means from the Cold start till the end of the day the car will get only air from the factory hose from the grille, for the last days i have just close the hot air hole with heat tape and the TC-6 shows in City traffic 10,1-10,2 ltr/ 100 Km which is sort of ''Good" but let's wait till the next gas station pump test.

For the cold starts it would depend on how much heat the engine lost or gained from where it is parked, and other factors, 15 hours to some days could have lots of variables.

The consumption figures with the fuel leak and air filter fault have to be disregarded for your original purpose of measuring them.

With the time of year on balance you would probably be best with the flap at open until you can work something out.  Why is it not working, is it its thermostat faulty or something mechanical stuck.

Could you convert it from thermostat control to manually controlled with perhaps a cable to open and close it from inside the car.

@Pete_Ex-Wino said that about that wax thermostat

Why disregard them? If the car was working with hot air only plus the fuel leak these would affect the fuel consumption.

I thought it was a new part or NOS, though both can give faulty parts.  It worked when tested before fitting

but obviously not now.

I mean disregard them for your testing of parts and combination of parts, you do not know when and by how much either of these faults started and progressed.

With the air box you can at least go back to how it was for many years before and now you are using a more reliable and robust paper air filter.

The quest continues.

Just get sprint filter

I send them email 3 days ago, i asked them if the P121S is proper for my car (due to ECU-chip, the custom exhaust etc) or if they have to suggest me another code and if i can buy it straight from them.

No answer yet, maybe they don't have time for Felicia owners or they don't want more money from new customers.

Yes, parking the car in the road where the sun hit's it many hours = very quickly Cold start.

Here is the ''next":

10th Gas station pump test: 146,7 Km distance, 14,550 ltr fuel which means 9,91 ltr / 100 km or 28.50 Uk mpg (high temperature city traffic mainly plus some kilometres in mountain route)

Yes, i am very happy 😁 and i think the results could be better next time because now the leak was stopped and the air box takes only fresh air.

No, only one store from Italy said that if i order it today i will get it (via courier with high shipping) at the first day of August (!) and when i said why that kind of delay they replied that they will get it first from the manufacturer (order) and when they get it they can send it to Greece.

Update:

Due to the summer vacations i manage to make a trip to the country, i had in the odometer only few kilometres in City traffic and the rest were an National Highway and Mountain roads although i was carrying some heavy luggages.

11th Gas station pump test: 255,8 Km distance, 18,660 ltr fuel which means 7,29 ltr / 100 km or 38.74 Uk mpg which are very good results.

As for the Cold starts although the temperature was high the ''fastest'' always were at the noon, in the morning always i had a ''delay'' but never count it in seconds but i don't think would be less than 3:40

Well summer seems to be sorted at least.  Well done.

Cold start measurement: the car has parked in the road and the morning sun could hit it directly so it took only 5 seconds.

Fuel consumption: 2 persons, Mountain roads (not high rpm) National road (speed till 100-120 Km, in purpose no more but with medium load of baggages in the trunk)

12th Gas station pump test: 314,4 Km distance, 21,070 ltr fuel which means 6,70 ltr / 100 km or 42,16 Uk mpg which is the personal fuel consumption Record from 2005 till now 2022. 🤩

Well something worked out right - but what change or change of part most contributed. 🤣

Now to see if records can be set in autumn and winter.

The new NGK Lambda sensor was ''the Master'', without him no matter how i have tried i would have such low Mpg numbers.

The programmer insisted than the Bosch wasn't the best choice and he could not guarantee that the signals which was sending to the ECU would be 100% proper.

Due to the high temperatures and the climate change here in Greece you can use a motorcycle even at October (!) so the Winter car traffic times will come at least in November.

It does seem that way which shows the importance of getting the right relevant part and good on your programmer for highlighting the possible problem.

and don't trust the Skoda parts seller which gives anything is suitable for him at this moment.

I lost money in wrong Bosch lambda sensor plus money in gas plus many hours of worry ''what's wrong?"

BAD NEWS:

13th Gas station pump test: 164 Km distance, 19,890 ltr fuel which means 12,1 ltr / 100 km or 23,34 Uk mpg

Those 164 Km were made in short routes (home to work) and only 2 times few kilometres in a boulevard, that because was Summer season and most of the time i used my small motorcycle.

I am very disappointed because my Trusty still after all that effort by me to solve the problem does not likes the short routes and refuses to make better Cold Starts than 3:44 minutes.

I made a test, i removed the factory filter box and run few kilometres with the air box empty, i had no problem at all in low-medium rpm but the Cold Star today morning at 12 o'clock noon was 3:42 minutes.

4wEdzpj.jpg

Just for the experiment i installed a No Name POD to check the Cold Start time at 6 o'clock in the afternoon, the Cold Start was 3:41 minutes.

GqPrcvh.jpg

No road test with POD, just a Cold Start but as i can see no matter if it's the factory Paper filter or No filter or POD my car refuses to make short Cold Starts.

Since the incoming air to the MAP-Throttle is different in those 3 cases WHY the Cold Start is almost identical?

PS: the @Thefeliciahacker told my to install Sprint Filter, yes i have it in mind but what difference would make since my car (in all three ways) refuses to make shorter time Cold Starts?

no it would not i dont think the amount of air at idle can alter significantly
