the truth about electric cars

Featured Replies

The Electric busses / coaches are here and Chargers are in and going in and the Electric HGV and LGV,s are here and the facilities for charging are going in and are already in at various locations.

Applications for Battery Storage Facilities keep getting knocked back at Council Planning Meetings in Scotland. These are absolutely necessary if the excess electricity that can be generated is to be used.

There is just a crazy amount of electricity available in many regions of Scotland, some quite remote and yet the turbines are turned of as not wanted by the National Grid and there is no storage locally.

No battery storage or used to produce hydrogen.

When I was working on the buses, in my garage there was 100 buses and if they had been electric the power they would need could have have been enough to power the entire housing stock of London.

The good old days, reeking buses, just like Ann Gloag of Stage Coach,s

old Berry Busses they used.

London is not in Scotland though, and the population of Scotland is less than in London.

London needs to have more Wind Farms, Solar, Nuclear, Gas Powered & Coal Fired power stations maybe,

and then you can run CLEANER Busses from that energy.

Maybe even more Oil Wells and Refineries.

Electric Buses are now in Cities and on Routes and there are more coming.

@Ootohere that was a rather strange review of a bus, have to agree with his appraisal of the exterior and the dim front route box is strange as that one needs to brighter than the rear, so people can see it above the glare from headlights. I found it rather odd that he kept going on about the good right of the bus, as if that was a feature of electric buses, it isn't, there is no need for the normal diesel buses to have such a harsh rough rattled and bumpy ride at all. Back in the time I was with buses, we had air suspension on our buses and the Bristol RE coaches used to waft along on airbags. Also the 3 bell pushes for different types of bus passengers is so going to be misused, but that is a direct consequence of having the exit halfway along the side of the bus, the driver can't see just who needs to get off and thus activate the different ramp/step units.

Great idea being a Vlogger on busses though. Make busses cool!

You can do a video every day for very little expense. No need trying to blag Media cars or Demonstrators.

Choose a stance and away you go.

Edited by Ootohere

He is not unique though, there are loads of channels that are all about buses, some about repairs, others about American buses etc. Yes, buses are cool until you have to rely on them and put up with the horrendous ride some of them have and the terrible rattles etc.

I think people need to watch this video, it highlights some of the issues I have been saying regarding the false claims that electric cars are green and the methods of mining and production of the rare metals etc used to make the batteries are far from green and the massive human cost and the massive toxic waste and pollution released directly into the atmosphere and the sea.

In this video is the footage of Sam Evans (The Electric Viking) who is also it seems aided in the escape of Chris Bowens (Australia Energy Minister) from the critical open public questioning of the media who produced this documentary about the dirty Nickel from Indonesia which has effectively shut down the Nickel mining in Australia which was producing green Nickel without the toxic waste on pollution, all in the name of quick easy money. It is looking like there is an agenda with electric cars after all, that does not fit the narrative we all being fed.

Terrible. And the nickle is not just for lithium batteries, for the catalysts in green hydrogen production and high performance alloys used in wind turbines and solar panels.

Its really mean being green.

Also being mineral or oil & gas rich and wiping out people all around the world to get the land and resources.

Much of the equipment and weapons for that not just from China or Russia but the USA & the UK.

Indeed. Nickel is being used less and less with EV batteries as car companies are phasing out NMC lithium batteries in favour of LFP lithium batteries, BYD over completely to this chemistry. Sodium and LFP may be the normal chemistry for EVs but I have not heard of alternate materials for usages like gas turbine blades and many other uses for Nickel.

Old story and a quickly diminishing issue for EVs. Lots of lithium and rare earth metals in US, UK ie Cornwall etc just we would rather buy cheap from less ethical countries and perhaps time to do this in our own countries, mine and refine. Dig baby dig !

Nickel is also used extensively for plating plumbing items as a less environmentally damaging alternative to hexavalent chromium.

I recall there was some Chroming process that involved cyanide if I recall correctly which the EU banned, maybe some residuals cyanide leftover, so one very large importers asked us to removed hundreds or may have been thousands of their cars from the coastal customs warehouse to import them before the July 1st deadline.

If the public even knew a fraction of what is done they would freak. We rely on the EU to continue to improve public safety for Europe but standards elsewhere are not so good but to be fair China and India are doing a lot to improve the exposure of dangerous chemicals to their citizens but it is a long road to Nirvana.

Sodium Cyanide as used for electro plating & that the cargo ship turned out was not carrying in containers that struck the tanker that was caring the barrels of jet fuel off the East Coast the other week.

Sodium cyanide used in the extraction of gold and silver.

Dangers every place you look.

Killed on the ground or in the skies by anyone anyplace with material that come out of the ground and are traded globally.

Australia likes jails and jailing the indigenous Australians.

They even poisoning them to make them from having children or just to kill them.

Probably Colonial Britain taught others a lot of what went on in the past and not that distant past.

Exactly, but will they do that, no of course not, money talks, which makes a complete mockery out of all the waffle we are being told about net-zero and harmful emissions, especially when you consider that it is claimed that those plants in Indonesia are spewing out more harmful emissions than the whole of Mexico and in addition to that the sheer scale of the deforestation that is going on there to extract the nickel, when we really also badly need trees etc in order to process the vast amounts of CO2 being produced. It does make you wonder about the ethics of the whole green thing is being just one big con to help make a lot of money for certain people, and loads of people may be accepting backhanders to assist the propagation of the con. That is not to say that electric could well be the future, but not at the current pace.

Edited by Graham Butcher

Elon Musk's xAI super computer is accused or reported as having high polluting emission.

Lots of people want to make money, even more want stuff for what they consider as cheap.

That is very much a British think. All the tat that they buy from around the world be that from China, Indonesia.

Natural gas, wood / paper, clothes, and electrical equipment among imports from Indonesia.

All fair and well talking about stuff, but you need to consider if your purchasing & getting a bargain adds to others wealth or to terrible work conditions for a very poor work life balance.

Equally, it's going to be a never ending spiral to the bottom if we continually keep sacrificing all the things we hold dear to our hearts if we have to keep making cuts to the way we live in order to counterbalance the effects that these rogue countries are making on the global environment. In the video, we saw 2 huge nickel mines in Australia, perfectly green ones, no forest to destroy as it is effectively already a desert. The 2 pictures below show areas of approx 5,000 square miles in Indonesia as opposed to the same area in Western Australia where there are 2 nickel mines which are now non-productive because of the no regulations in Indonesia, which is home to as the picture shows some of the world's greatest forests, which as we already know, digest CO2 and give us back pure oxygen

Statement from Volkswagen Group:

Since 2021, the Volkswagen Group has also provided information on the fulfilment of its human rights due diligence obligations in the raw materials supply chain, including reporting on the status, progress and goals of the raw material due diligence management system, in an annual “Responsible Raw Materials Report”.

Here is an excerpt from the nickel chapter:

In 2024, we conducted a field trip to Indonesia to assess environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks related to nickel mining. The trip facilitated engagement with local stakeholders, including government bodies, workers’ unions and community representatives, to identify challenges and implement risk mitigation strategies.

In the reporting year, the Volkswagen Group took a leadership role as a founding member of an on-the-ground partnership project in Indonesia. This initiative focuses on driving on-the-ground improvements addressing key ESG risks such as biodiversity loss, labor conditions, human rights impacts, water contamination and tailing management. The partnership promotes collaboration with local stakeholders, including mining companies, NGOs and community representatives, to implement tangible solutions and improve industry practices. Potential on-the-ground projects in the Indonesian regions of Sulawesi and Halmahera were evaluated. Following these scoping activities, implementation of the projects is planned to start in 2025.

We also aligned with the Chinese and Indonesian companies on in-country work in Indonesia to promote sustainable sourcing and enhance traceability. During the reporting year, the Volkswagen Group also continued to engage in discussions with NGOs, media and other stakeholders to target key issues such as biodiversity degration and human rights risks and explored satellite monitoring programs of the European Space Programme partnership to monitor deforestation activities.

Stakeholder Engagement

— Founding member of Nickel on-the-ground partnership project in Indonesia

— Engagement in industry initiatives and working groups

— Ongoing dialogue with industry peers and direct and indirect suppliers

— Collaboration with NGOs and stakeholders

For 2025 we plan to

— continue promoting IRMA within the nickel supply chain.

— implement an on-the-ground partnership project in Indonesia.

— further adapt our processes and prepare for the EUBR.

The EV con: Deadly side of the electric vehicles sold in...

‘They were still searching for his body for days.’

Well done, very perceptive, certainly not anti-EV (!)

The Global Significance of Indonesian Nickel

Impact on Global Supply Chains

Indonesia's decisions regarding nickel production and export policies reverberate throughout global supply chains. As the source of half the world's mined nickel, production disruptions can trigger immediate price responses and availability concerns globally.

The country has become indispensable to electric vehicle manufacturing, supplying approximately 40% of the nickel used in EV batteries worldwide. Major automakers including Tesla, Volkswagen, and BYD have established direct supply agreements with Indonesian producers to secure stable nickel supplies for their battery production.

In the stainless steel industry, Indonesian nickel pig iron (NPI) has transformed production economics, particularly in China, which relies on Indonesian material for approximately 65% of its nickel inputs for stainless steel manufacturing.

Beyond commercial applications, Indonesian nickel has strategic importance for defense applications. Nickel alloys are critical components in jet engines, submarine systems, and missile technology, making secure supply chains a national security priority for many countries.

I remembering having a bottle of cyanide antidote by the case hardening area which the instructor said drink with 3 seconds else you would be Brown Bread. Reassuring.

Dumb as Homer Simpson.

After 30 years still not sure US citizens get the joke of the Simpsons.

Springfield is the town that appears in most of the 50 US states. The Homers are average Americans.

That said I know some smart US people and they are very rare. Most of the smart people in the US are immigrants, Elon Musk being an exception but as with the current US admin they are great at exploiting situations ie low IQ US voters.

nearly 1,000 miles in 17hrs in a Tesla averaged just under 60mph including charging, driving at 80+mph

So that's 4.5 hours charging. He was also speeding for most of the route.

Realistically how long would you rest stop for a 12.5 hour drive?

At a guess:

Rest stop every 2.5 hours mean 5 rest stops, at 20min for 1st, 3rd and 5th, 40min for food at 2nd and 4th => 2.33 hours stopped anyway.

Slower speed = higher efficiency = less need to charge.

Let's also not forget we live in a small island with really over crowded roads. Driving 500 miles takes just as much time.

Portions of the Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming road networks have 80 mph
