  • Don't turn the ignition on while the airbag is disconnected.

  • MIL light on the dashboard and fault code that cannot be deleted with a basic code reader, VCDS or similar used, not the end of the world.

Sadly that might be the only option for a quick fix, but then we'd always be wondering how long it would last. Thinking of buying another car, my daughter needs something for work, she's currently using her brother's car, and sometimes a friends'.

It can't be reassembled without the broken part and still function?

Let me rewrite this as I read it - Can you reassemble the ignition switch without the ignition switch?

@KenONeill

If there was an award for pointless sarcasm you'd get the gold medal.

Of course, its called hot-wiring or shunting.

Fallen out of peoples consciousness due to cars having RF chipped keys for the last 25 years but the OP still has the encoded key, he could wire up a seperate ignition/starter switch and not lose any security just a longer start procedure.

I had a failed thermo-time switch on a K-Jetronic Scirocco GLi, it was a pig to start on winter mornings without enrichment, I was working long hours a long way from any VW dealer, at lunchtime armed with 2 drawing pins, a rubber (pencil eraser not condom) and a speaker cable ripped from the parcel shelf I made up a DIY manual switch for cold starts.

As far as hot wiring is concerned it would have been a doddle had I not actually destroyed the switch. I could have reconnected the antenna to the wiring and put the key within the cylinder and that would suffice. But I'm not confident about the steering lock so will remove that anyway. I can order the bits and get the car sorted for after the holiday, but will need to buy a cheap car in the interim anyway.

Well the Yorkshire one looks promising, but the other was China! 🤣

Thanks for that, I'll order the bits but no longer in a panic, just about to buy another car.

If you think that sounds a bit OTT, there's other issues I haven't even started on, mainly a logbook issue which makes me reluctant to spend cash until we have it in our possession.

Thanks for the help, keep you posted.

The second one isn't China it's a holding place in Leicester I've had many items from places like that

Ok, interesting, I wonder why the Chinese address on the bottom of the page 🤔

Anyway, picked up another car now and that's perfect, so I can fix this over the holiday when I have time. I'll let you all know when it's done and working well again, cheers!

Reminds me of the rich arab buying a new Roller every time the old one ran out of petrol!

So the car with the broken switch has only one key and no logbook. Sounds like stolen/recovered or Cat S/N insurance write-off.

Update, now have the logbook. I won't make that mistake again.

I will fix the Skoda soon now that the break is over. Didn't have time to look at it at all. I will give you an update once it's done, cheers.
