New 19” tyres required, which ones

Featured Replies

Car passed MOT, just an advisory on the tyres as expected.

So can now wait until April for the Eagle F1 6’s

So you want to drive another 2 months on cracked tyres (why?)

Then change to Ultra high performance summer tyres

I thought it was a Superb, not a sports car.

Be interesting to see what your winter tyre choice will be, as you are not buying all year (all season) tyres. Remember UHP summer tyres don’t work well below about +10c and are really optimised for +20c upwards.

By the way, having a used by Volvo label, doesn’t mean can only be used on Volvos, just means they had some input into its spec, then fitted it to some of their models.

  • Yes, you absolutely do not know what you’re talking about.

  • Expensive does not necessarely means  they are the best as well, but i understand what you say.

  • Couldn't say, I haven't paid much attention to it on the PS4 I've seen on other cars. Photos of them aren't helping much either. My Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 5s have excellent rim protection though

There’s a few reasons why I’m going to wait but the main one is I only do around 10 miles per week if that, sometimes more but generally low use

I think the Eagle F1 will be a good choice because when I do go for a longer drive I can either drive like an old man when the dogs onboard or go for a spirited drive when he’s not inside.

The new F1 6 is cheaper than the F1 5 as well and no potential of being sat in a warehouse and be a few years old before I’ve even used them

They look ready to fall apart. I'd be surprised if the MOT tester didn't at least put an advisory on your MOT history.

The P7’s on our 280 are exactly the same as Danoids and it passed the MOT last Saturday without any advisories. It’s annoying, given there is probably another 10k in them.

The cracking from what I’ve read is completely normal, as long as it’s on the tread it’s okay  but I’ll be changing for sure.

I also had an inspection and tyres have around 3.5mm left, if they weren’t cracking I’d expect at least 50k miles on the P7’s set which is amazing tbh even though they’re not really a great all rounder

Well, that's actually the problem, you don't have 10K in them.

That's like saying the packet of condoms that's 18 months out of date has 4 roots left in them.

What's the manufacture date on the side of the tyre?

Edited by Legion

But sell by dates are old school now as you do not want to waste for no good reason. The tyres are cracking because they are merging into all season tyres with extra sipes.

2016 is the manufactured date.

What I meant by annoying is if it didn’t have the cracks

1. Well, that's actually just your inexperience causing you to spout such nonsense.

2. Well, that's a pretty dumb and wholly inaccurate analogy

3. 0316

When did a packet of three become a packet of 4?

Mate, if the tyres are that rooted that you can see the cracking, they might be still round but the rubber is no longer performing as it should.

They come in packets of 24 in Australia. Better to buy in bulk but its a false economy if your not using them.

🙄 Sigh…. you still don’t know what you’re talking about.

You have to laugh. More tyre experts than a F1 team, advising a man insisting on driving a car on knackered tyres, who drives it 10 miles per week but wants performance tyres…….. 😀 Just buy some tyres and stop messing about.

Oh wise one what would you recommend then?

You don’t have to be a tyre expert to recommend tyres, if you knew anything about tyres you’d know pros and cons and when tyres for our cars can be as much as £230 per tyre I’d rather not take a punt

Regardless I’m waiting for the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 released in about 3 weeks

The SportContact 7 won the latest tyreview test performing really well in both the wet and dry, and the Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport came in 4th place. They didn't test the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 or the Michelin Pilot Sport 5.

So much cheaper but unfortunately my insurance won’t have it that it’s bigger than original spec 😞

Asymmetric 6 providing a little more rim protection than the P7’s which I thought was very good anyway, handy when visiting the in laws as it’s street parking only and horrible old broken kerbs.

I’d say quieter than the P7’s by quite a bit as well which is good

I got them from Camskill in the end at £155 per tyre then £60 fitted with usual balancing, disposal etc

Due to go on a longish drive soon which will bed them in nicely.

Just need to get some Bilt Hamber auto wheels

Thank Gawd for that “bud”…🙄

New question - best eco tyres in this size?

Local fitter has some Pirelli Powergy that are B rated for fuel eco. I spend about 80% of my high mileage cruising along a motorway, and since it's business mileage with a fixed fuel reimbursement rate, then eco is more important than outright grip, not interested in summer UHP tyres; but don't want to fall off the road on a wet RAB. Any recommendations?

On shortlist so far:

Yokohama BluEarth-GT AE51

Bridgestone Turanza T005

Pirelli Powergy

These are the only obvious eco tyres on black circles right now in the 235/40/19 size.
