2019 Superb 206 vs 2019 Golf R

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm just looking to get some advice regarding the two cars. I currently drive a 2011 125TDI which has been totally reliable. I'm looking to buy a new used car and I was looking for something a little quicker. I've worked out for me the best value 0-100km per dollar in Australia is probably the Golf R. The Superb 206 variants appear to have the same engine and drive train as the Golf R and I've been following elfensin's alloy wheels thread and Gandalf's build and they look like nice cars. I'm not sure why leather seems to have disappeared off Aussie cars.

Why is the Superb a second slower than the Golf R

Superb 206

   Engine code    CJX

   Tare weight     1578 Kg

   Power              206Kw @ 6500rpm

   Torque             350Nm @ 1700-5600rpm

   0-100kmh        5.8 sec

Golf R

   Engine code    DJHB

   Tare weight     1450 Kg

   Power              213Kw @ 6500rpm

   Torque             380Nm @ 1850-5300rpm

   0-100kmh        4.8 sec

There is 128Kg difference in tare weight, a few kw down, and 30Nm down. The Golf R has a 7 spd gearbox while the Superb has a 6 spd gearbox.

On paper it doesn't seem a huge difference.

Do they both have the same turbocharger unit?

Would a light tune bring the 0-100 under the Golf R?

thanks

Andrew

It’s heavier and less powerful…

As far as I can tell, 4.8s for the Golf R is using launch control, and 5.8s for the Superb is without launch control.

Here's a comparison of a stock Superb using launch control to do a 5.3s 0-100, and remapped doing 4.5s -

That makes a lot of sense

7kw is about 0.16 seconds and 128kg is about 0.38 seconds based on some calculators. So 0.54 seconds all up.

So 0.5 s of launch control makes up the difference.

Thanks

The Superb is a bigger car in every sense.

And it’s more comfortable, more practical, almost as quick (literally less than a blink of an eye to 60) and just as well built… what’s not to like?

I like 👍

I’d like a leather interior instead of velour, digital dash and a sub 5 second 0-100 more.

Previously, we got the Superb 206, which could b optioned with leather seats (i.e. Comfort Pack).

Then they introduced the Superb 206 Sportline, which meant sports seats only, hence no option for leather seats.

The introduction of the 206 Sportline variant meant the death of the normal 206, here in Oz.

Skoda AU wasn't interested in selling both 206 and 206 Sportline.

I think it was MY17 that was the last of the non-Sportline 206 available.

If you need the backseat and boot space, I'd take a Superb any time of the day. If you don't, I wouldn't hesitate and take the Golf. Even though the platform is the same the Golf is a much much better ride.

Do you need backseat space? If not, go for a Golf R.

Here in OZ, Golf R's resale value is much much higher than a Skoda Superb.

Regarding to the seat, I do believe Skoda AU offers ventilated leather seats options on Sportline, at least offerd early last year. I remember I did see some demo Sportlines with leather seats on carsales.

Sportline models come with Alcantara leather Sports seats, which r heated only.

the full leather seats (offered with the Comfort Pack) r both ventilated & heated.

these leather seats aren't available on the Sportline, although I believe they r now, from MY20/MY21.

I'm not sure whether it is able to order a new Sportline with the leather seat optional now, since the 'build a Skoda' function on Skoda AU has been disappeared for quite a long time.

@elfensin - yes, that's a facelift MY21 Sportline.

Hence it has the leather seats, not previously available on the Sportlines here in Oz.

I’m not going to buy new. I’m looking at a 2018. While the golf has better resale and is better specified with leather and digital dash it’s also 10k more to buy. I’m going to salary sacrifice it so 10k difference in price equates to an extra 2k in fbt a year. Golfs are more popular so there’s more demand at sale time. We’re a family of 5 but my wife has a car as well.

Yes, I've long suspected that the times for the Superb 206 Sportline are without launch control activated (which is available on the vehicle), while those for the Golf R are.

Out of interest are the figures in the back of the owner's manual that came with my MY21 Superb indicating a 5.2 second for 0-100Kmh (and 400Nm of torque).

I should have added, that it demonstrates how the Euro 6 emission standards hobble the performance!

10k is a lot of money!  it all depends on your needs, if your wife's car is big enough and the extra money isn't a concern then my choice would be the Golf R!

The reason why I bought my MK3 Superb instead of the a MK3 VRS due to it having the same engine/components as the Golf R and the family preferred it due to the space -it was more expensive than the VRS but still cheaper than a Golf R.

I never thought somebody would compare a Golf & a Superb....the Golf's interior (especially the rear seat space & boot space) is way smaller than the Superb....the cars are in two completely different class/size categories....regardless if they have both been fitted with the same or similar powertrain...

2019 was the last (MY19) build of the non SportLine 206's for Oz.

Default was leather, Comfort Pack added perforated/ventilated leather.

Note that from about MY17, Sportlines had most 'options' standard, whereas earlier Sportlines and all 'normal' 206's had tech/comfort packs as options. They were quite pricey $3500/$1500 (tech/comfort).

The Golf R and Superb are similar, but a Golf R is going to be a more focussed driving car than a Superb.

Pick up on Friday. A 2018 MY19.

Well done. My wagon is a 2018 MY19 too.

Enjoy it.

Superb 2 280 is more a long distance cruiser that has good performance - its not the same thing as a Golf R. its Apples and Oranges.

The newer superbs with 7speed gearbox is faster. But the original 6speed does have a slightly underrated time.

In any case, if the OP wants the space, get the superb. Get a remap if more performance required.

The 7 speed isn't any faster, especially in the 0-100 Km/h segment. The DQ381 7 speed is being rolled-out as it has lower cruising rpm = better fuel economy and meeting emissions requirements in certain markets. The DQ381 (stock) can also handle additional torque (DQ250 is apparently limited to 400Nm in stock form - but can be safely tuned above that).

TBH, unless you use launch control or some specific DSG re-mapping, the biggest impediment with any DSG is getting it quickly off the line, as there is always the inevitable pause while the clutches engage. Recent local tests of the updated VW Arteon (same 206kw engine tune), it was almost a full second outside the advertised 0-100 km/h time, unless launch control was used, when it then performed almost exactly to the advertised time.

Despite some answers above, I went through this exact same thought process in the last few months and was down to either Golf R estate or Superb 272/280 hatch or estate - clearly very different but both ticked my must-have (4x4, enough room for family of 4 plus Golden Retriever, THAT engine with a possible stage one remap). Drove both, loved both.

Changed my mind a few times - the key points for me in the end were toys/options, space in the rear, likelihood to be nicked (work a fair bit in big cities including overnight parking) and relative value for money - the Superb edged it but probably would have been happy/compromised on either. As it is I have a 25k 2019 L&K 272 for roughly the same prices as would have got me a 2018 Golf with a few more miles. Resale values clearly favour the Golf though.
