Cambelt replaced and Hmmm!

Featured Replies

Hi, after a bit of information or advice before I go back to the Dealer as it is now too late in the day now.

Had the cambelt replaced as it is 5 years old along with oil and filter,  I only live around the corner from the dealer and it was slow traffic so didn't notice the following.

Drove the car and it felt sluggish when i put foot down and then slowly picked up speed,  I can usually feel a definite pick up of speed, I now hear what sounds like an intake of air as the engine picks up speeds, I've never heard or noticed this before.

Just wondering if anyone has any possible reasons.

Octavia SE L Tsi, 2017,

Thanks in advance.

If the cambelt required the removal of intake and boost pipes I'd be checking those are all in place, intact and tight first

Unfortunately, I don't look under the bonnet other than to check fluids etc so I wouldn't know if that was the case but it does sound about right, give me a classic mini or MK4 Cortina, I wouldn't have a problem stripping parts down, things have got too electronically complicated for me.

It sounds like the turbo boost pipe has popped off- very common on turbo cars- easy fix if it has just need to push back on and then tighten the pipe clamp👍 You will be able to see this easily too if you lift the bonnet 👍

Just had a quick look under the bonnet, the pipes / hoses do not feel loose assuming i'm looking in the correct area with the light from the phone,  It makes sense a pipe being loose to the turbo with the symptoms I have.  Will have another look first thing tomorrow, but seeing as I paid all that money, I shall be popping around to Skoda and getting them to look at it.

Yes the main dealer should definitely sort it- mistakes happen as we are all human 👍

Sounds like the cambelt timing is out, maybe one tooth, fitted wrong.

If it was that far out wouldn't the cam shaft sensor be throwing up an warning light / error code ?

No idea, ask the dealer to check.

Quick update,  It was just a loose pipe connection,  I wasn't at the dealer for longer than 20 minutes, that includes chatting to reception who went to find service manager.

Thank you guys for answering and putting my fears to rest, it all made sense when boost pipe was mentioned.

I thought so. I have replaced a turbo on my own car years ago and forgot to tighten the boost pipe so knew straight away what it was lol😂

Didn't replace the turbo but did do some work a long time ago that resulted in the boost pipe not clicking back in fully - it popped off after about a mile and the car felt like it had about 25bhp!

When I replaced the boost pipe on it some years later I made sure all the clips and clamps were damn tight!

From the description I was given, it may have been these clips that were not snapped in correctly therefore not creating the seal.

Certainly makes a difference when it is all sealed. 😀

Funny thats almost exactly what happened to me- pulled away at a roundabout and pop and no power lol
