The 2-door Nova saloon

I think this is the first time I've ever seen one.

ETA: reminds me of and old HA Viva a mate had in the mid-70s, the passenger could lift the foot mat and polish their boots on the front tyre as  the car went along.

  • My first car at 18 years old, Celica 1600 ST, obviously I was shy so it had an Eagle on the bonnet and huge Pioneer speakers.

They were quite rare compared to their 4-door counterparts IIRC.

My Granda (through my Mum's side) had an HA Viva when he passed his driving test in 1966. It started life in duck-egg blue, then white, then red with a black roof. :D

My dad had a viva in 70s ,i used to watch him try to mend it as kid every weekend ,hence i have a large repatoir of foul language thanks to that viva .

You needed the paint to hold them together, same for many other makes and models though.  These films and TV programs of the 60s and 70s with all the cars very shiny and pristine when most were dirty and rusty.  Vauxhalls were even worse in the early 70s for rust, same with the Datsuns that held them back otherwise the British car makers would have gone down the toilet earlier than they did.

Another one, with the Veccy B. This must have been one of the earliest examples as well. Taken at Aird Donald Caravan Park in Stranraer, c.1996.

My Dad's first Nova... a D-reg 1.2, presumably a Merit.

Not gat a photo of my actual one, but I'm ashamed to admit my first student car was a white Renault 6 like this one!

It lasted 2 months before ending up upside down in a ditch...

My first car, a 1937 Morris 8 Tourer, and my Norton Model 50, the latter my first ‘proper’ motorbike,  bought the day after I passed my bike test (on a Lambretta) at 16 yrs old in 1963.

Just found a picture of the car I inherited in 2002 - the car that got me into VAG - 1989 small bumper 3dr Mk2 GTI 16v, named by its previous owner as 'Schwarzer Blitz':

Schwarzer Blitz.jpg

Fond memories 😎 of a car left in my ward by my mate Larry, who passed away in 2002 after a short battle with prostate cancer (he lost).

I remember thrashing one of those around an airfield a long time ago!  the place I was at also had an 8v that was torquier and would pull away slightly out of corners but was then caught by the 16v on the straights.

After razzing both I had a go in an Ferrari Mondial that had a pig of a gearbox so was glad to get back in my MX5 for the drive home!

A contender for one of the best cars I've owned.  I got it new in 1990 and drove it for 238,000 miles until I wrote it off in '98 in a low speed accident in traffic in Edinburgh.

I thrashed it pretty much everywhere including extended periods at 100 mph on French Autoroutes and around Circuit de Charade at Clermont Ferrand with wife, kids and tyres squealing.

I took it off road, towed half a dozen grass surfers around a large field perched on a big sheet of plywood, towed an overly large caravan up and down Lake District passes, taught my 8 year old son to drive in it.  I could go on...

In its lifetime it consumed three radiators, two sets of suspension spheres, a few sets of discs and pads and several tyres.  I fitted the Peugeot 205 GTi alloys largely to get more air to the brakes after setting fire to them coming down Puy de Dôme.

When it was written off it was still on its original turbo and had had no engine work other than oil and filter changes.

My Dad have a BX19DTR estate in red and whilst he didnt have it for that long, I thought it was an awesome car.

  • 3 months later...

Trying to find a picture of my Saab 9-5 Aero (think they've been lost with the dead HD on my previous MacBook), I happened across XAP 229 Y, a Mk1 Golf I had for a while:

Bought with a blown head gasket, stripped it down, skimmed the head, put it back together   Manual choke, wind up windows and original cassette player, three speed auto.

You're making me want one now... been looking at various VAG 'classics' (at least old enough to get classic insurance) to tinker with. Just need a garage now! :D

After much ado, here's one of my 2001 Saab 9-5 HOT Aero in Cosmic Blue:

If I can find a clearer image, I'll update it.  I was so stupid, stupid, STUPID to let the insurance company write it off 😡

Awesome car, didn't own it for anywhere near long enough 🥲

And while I'm meandering down memory lane, my first CRX Del Sol 😎:

Loved it to bits, but christ did it rot away fast 🙄

Very nice. The one I drove was a 2004 red estate on 205k miles (stage 1 map too!!)... was told it was quick as fk, but didn't believe it... then gave it welly. New trousers were needed. :D

I've no reason to think this one was anything other than standard, but it went well

Of their time they were often lauded to have a better mid-range than a Porsche 911.  A friend has a 911, and there was definitely something to the accolade.  Very addictive, but with a thirst to match - mine averaged 21mpg, not that I bought it for economy 😇

those 95 aeros were such an underrated, natural sleeper, hot saloon.

i could never justify the running costs, otherwise id probably have one.

and now with the age and difficulty to get spares... 😞

i wish they hadnt gone to the wall.

Plenty of SAAB spares still available, my son works in a SAAB specialist garage keeping plenty of SAAB’s on the road.
He currently has a 9-5 2.3 Turbo Edition estate.

What that needs... is a stage 1 map. They get scary fast after that.
