My assisted power stering is not working properly

Featured Replies

Good morning!

Since the day i got this car i notice the steering sometimes is smooth sometimes not that smooth, and i saw the dashboard lights dimming.

months later i notice when the dashboard lights were having a dimming party (they went up and down in brightness) the steering was very smooth and when they stop  (the lights) the steering then harden a little.

With the broke tensioner thing i was able it was the power steering pump that was causing that, because once i disconnected it for saving electricity i notice the issue with the dashboard lights was gone.

A local mechanic told me there is no necessity to change the electronic pump, but there is something electrical that need to be check, he says maybe a contact or conector in bad shape, what i dont think so because it only does it exactly en 2-4 minutes after first start the engine.

It is like the pump is drawing excessive amount of current at the beginning then it stop.

Now that you finally have the alternator sorted out you really need to check the battery because you've been killing it for all that time.

+1 on what Sep said. Definitely check the battery. Mine does the same thing (lights dimming) when the battery is under load as a result of the PAS, always has done it.

yes, i did check it, the battery looks healthy, in voltage readings and they way it discharge and charge back, but the issue with the lights of the dashboard is since i got the car,

I seem to remember that your fusebox above the battery is a big mess? So maybe a bad contact or wrong fuse installed for the PAS?

So what's the voltage reading in the morning before you start the engine?

i dont remember but i think it was 12.54 or 12.64, (it does the same with any battery i put in it)

Same here but it used to do it far worse when my previous battery was failing.

I've only ever had to jump start my Fabia once since me being a dingbat left the door open and the blower on when I was working on the under-seat box. :D

Oh dear :D

Those mountain roads might not help some steering parts and components.

Not the case, it has  been doing that since the day i got it.

The PAS is having a better life in my ha d because the previous user had no protective cover under the car, and al time in wet roads

It was meant more in jest but those roads would not do the steering generally any favours.

...or the road springs which are known to frequently snap on normal roads.

You clearly haven't had a Grande Punto then, Lee? Those Fiats went through the bloody springs as if they were going out of fashion. :D

Perhaps they were made of Italian spaghetti? :D

Broke like uncooked spaghetti, drove like cooked spaghetti. :D

I once drove a FIAT Panda, the old box shape ones, and it felt like it had no springs at all 😄
