Rusty Brake Discs

Featured Replies

I have noticed that my all brake discs are rusty, does anybody know how get rid of this?

New discs. Good quality discs such as ATE are about £240 for two 340mm front discs and two 310mm rear discs. However, with summer weather coming the appearance might improve

over the summer. Do the brakes work ok?

Use them....hard

Hard braking from speed a few times should clean them up. Apply progressively. Don't overdo it, allow time to cool between braking. Visual check and repeat if necessary.

Obviously observe safe practices, good weather/conditions, good straight road, quiet, preferrably no traffic, check no-one behind you and no oncoming traffic that may be impacted if you lose control of your direction etc etc

They will always be rusty after sitting for a while.

They can be rusty sitting for a few hours sometimes!

Nothing to worry about most of the time. Check them just after you’ve been for a drive and see if they are better then.

Yep, in perfect conditions they rust pretty much instantly.

It’s the UK, not a desert country, steel rusts

Will rust much faster when wet, if you had driven through puddles splashing them before parking.   Rusts even faster if water was salty (which is often put on roads during icy weather).

Basically as others have said, find a wide empty straight road, brake heavily to scour them clean.  You might need to apply handbrake to clean rears as fronts normally do majority of work

As others have said, its absolutely normal, just drive the car that will sort them out.
