Tyre size

Featured Replies

Hi Guys , I am proud owner of the Superb 2016 SE estate , I bought the car with the Avon tyres 215-55r17 , I want to change these tyres to the all season and looking at the size of the tyres , my question is how much wider tyres I can putt in ( I want to go for 225-55r17 or even 235-55r17 ) will the 225 or 235 wide tyre fit on my 17”Rim ? Thank you

If you have 17" rims & If you go 215, to 225 or 235 you can not keep 55 each time as that is 55% of the 215.   55% of 225. 55% of 235.

ie the circumference of the tyres is getting more and more, the tyres are to tall.

Okay , I am not very good at this , could you tell me then if I want to go wider from 215 , can I go to 225/55 or 235/45?

Hopefully @Carlstonwill be along with all the info you should ever need.

225/55r17 is perfect choice

+1.5% in diameter

what gives less wheel spin on the wet

and closer to reality values on speedometer, -2km for each 100km, default is -5km

+5mm in height

what gives ground clearance

+10mm in width

what gives better grip

5mm wider side, better protection for alloys

Without an issue ? I just been to ask in Skoda saloon and they said I can’t putt any different then is already on the car 😒😒 offered me to buy bigger alloys instead 😒

For full reassurance Google the website 'Will they fit' - you can try all possible tyre and wheel size permutations on it.

all good :)

on OEM Stratos 7JX17 ET40 are mounted winter's Bridgestone Blizzak Ice 225/55 R17 101T XL
but summer's Michelin Primacy 3 225/55 R17 are mounted on AVUS Racing AC-515 Felgen black 7.5x17 E45

prepare before tires install, order some Direct Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Skoda dealers can't help you modify your car. All they can do is recommend what Skoda has approved.

Slightly oversize tyres such as 225/55R17 fitted to standard 7Jx17 ET40 rims and 245/45R18 fitted to 8Jx18 ET44 rims will be fine. Many Superb MK3 owners are already using these sizes without problems.

Speedometer values is not really an issue, as there is an adaptation that can be changed to fix that 😊

Anything up to approx. 5% increase in rolling circumference will usually tend to reduce any existing, built-in, speedo error. Can be checked with portable GPS unit. I use 215/60/16 winter tyres on my Octavia (instead of 205/55/16 in summer) and GPS matches speedo almost exactly with them fitted. From memory, winter size gives around 4. something % increase.

@komoornik  Would you be changing coding or using VCDS to alter the Speedo /milometer to suit the different tyre circumference?

If it is the  'Winter Tyre' speed warning setting you are thinking of that is a totally different thing.

We are talking about Superb 3 here. It doesn't even have the option you showed.

It's changing the adaptation via OBD11/VCDS. Adapation is called "Wheel Circ", and there are 8 options to choose from.

If I recall properly, setting the highest option on my car made the speedo go crazy, it was constantly showing 0 km/h 😁

What I meant is that you can change how the instrument cluster is displaying the speed, by changing the adapation which is basically setting different wheel size. Especially useful when going either for a smaller or bigger wheel.

All Continental European cars should have the Speed Warning for 'Winter Tyres' as otherwise a Sticker is required in some countries.

I am surprised if any Skoda Models but especially the biggest and in the past the most expensive models do not have that in the system someplace that an owner can set as it is required in some countries and is not just for owners to be aware what tyres are fitted but for anyone driving that vehicle..

Lesser Skoda models do have the options of 2 Speed Warning Settings.

To be honest I thought the option you showed is something magical to change the speed reading of the cluster 😅

Yeah, you can set it somewhere in the infotainment - but it's still not something I wanted to talk about anyway 😉
