Uncertain whether to replace sump plug only or plug plus washer on Fabia 3.

Featured Replies

     Hello,

I am going to get my 2017 Fabia 3 estate serviced at my normal independent soon. I am drawing up a list of the parts that will be needed, I normally do this and the garage source the parts from TPS. The only exception is the Castrol Edge 5w30, they normally have that in stock. I have told them to get a new sump plug and new sump washer but now I am wondering whether a new washer only would suffice, Before anyone tells me its only a few pounds difference I agree but all prices have increased  quite a  bit since the last service of course ( definitely more than  my pension increase)  and I dont want to specify anything  unless it is definitely needed. OK?

I must have specified both items two years ago because both were changed. I must also have specified the washer only one year ago because the washer only was changed. I havent had to top up the oil after either service until the oil and filter was next changed. Any leaks would of course be extremely unwelcome to put it mildly  because of the possibility of the oil level dropping too low and cause engine damage. Should I  get both sump plug and washer replaced this time and have alternative years from now on?

Thanks for reading, look forward to reading your answers.

If it is an EA211 engine, ie 1.2TSI or 1.0TSI, then it is only the washer that needs replacing, though from memory that crush washer costs same or more than the previous plug-washer combo used on some other engines. Though I tend to keep on buying these washers from a VW Group parts department.

Edit:- initially I did buy a new/spare plug as well as washers, but that was only for convenience in case I dropped the fitted plug and washer into my oil basin/catcher, ie so that I could fit the spare plug and new washer etc while waiting to retrieve the previous plug and washer from the oil while decanting it into an container prior to disposal.

Well, IMO (and E) there is no real point in replacing a steel sump plug, and a crush washer doesn't need replaced every oil drain.

At £1.25 each for plug and washer combined I got (two) box(es) of these, I know it's waste of materials but finding the washer in a reasonable quantity at a reasonable price was beyond me and I've already too many different washers and fixings spare that just take up space rather than use.

As happens often with VW (VAG) there was a change of mind (confusion) by them as to which engines needed which plugs and when but AFAIK this fits the 1.2 TSI engine and whatever number and code that is.

As at today, £6.25 for quantity of 5 -5 Oil Sump Drain Plugs - VW Golf Polo T4 T5 T6 - N90813201 Febi Trade Pack 48871 -

THIS!!

I always change the sump plug and washer... its a small cost and yes not very eco friendly but at least you know its sealed properly. Nothing worse than a ill-fitting crush washer and it leaking.
