Issues with adaptive cruise control

Featured Replies

I've owned my Kodiaq for nearly a year now and for the past 9 months I've had problems with the adaptive cruise control that until joining Briskoda I thought was unique to my car.  I didn't have problems with my previous Skoda Karoq so is it a problem linked only to Kodiaqs?  The issues I've had and continue to have are;

Traffic sign recognition -

  • The system mis-reads road signs. Often reads 5s as 8s so when I’m driving along the motorway and there’s a road sign stating to reduce speed to 50mph the system reads, and it’s displayed on the dashboard, as 80 mph therefore  if I have the Adaptive Cruise Control switched on the car begins to increase speed.
  • Occasionally converts 60mph into 110kph which cancels the Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Occasionally I switch on the Adaptive Cruise Control the sign in the dashboard states 34mph and won’t change the number so I have to repeatedly switch the Adaptive Cruise Control on and off until the sign informs of the true speed of the road.  This happens as I’m driving past road signs.

Drive Assist

  • Warning sign flashes on the dashboard to inform the system isn’t working with a bleep noise.  This can happen once in a journey or multiple times.  This issue occurs in different weathers and different parts of the journey. I’ve attempted without success to stop the flashing sign and bleeping noise by stopping the car, switched off the engine and restarted the engine to continue with my journey and yet it continues.  Also, the flashing sign and bleeping occurs whether I driving slowly or quickly or driving on straight roads or going around bends/roundabouts.  The Skoda dealership has said it's due to the buttons on the steering wheel so they've ordered another steering wheel.

Adaptive Cruise Control

  • When activated and traveling on the motorway, or dual carriageways, the system tells me via information on the dashboard there’s a bend ahead or a roundabout and begins to reduce the speed of the car to 40mph.  Issue is that when this occurs there’s never a bend ahead as I’m travelling along a straight road.
  • I’ll be travelling in the middle or outer lane of a motorway and the system will inform me via a warning sign in the dashboard that there’s a car on the left of my car, which there is because I’m on a motorway and I’m overtaking a vehicle on my left traveling at a lower speed, and the system decides to slow my car down so I’m unable to overtake the car on my left.  When this occurs I have to cancel the Adaptive Cruise Control so I can take control and over take the car on my left.

To add to the above I'm now having problems with the In Car Entertainment system as it's crashed twice and when it occurs a yellow coloured symbol shows on the dashboard with the words SOS next to the symbol.  When I  touch the screen but nothing happens other than a dotted circular symbol that going round.

Does anyone have any advice as the dealership have said that these issues are unique to my car but reading through other reviews on this web

site it appears these issues are more common than the dealership is letting on.

TSR - I make 60mph to be 96kph using 8/5. Which suggests either a wrong conversion factor or a wrong value in a look up table.

ACC  - No comment beyond that both issues are common when people insist on using this highly flawed software.

In the first 9 months or so of ownership (of 13) my SOS errored maybe two or three times and I put it down to poor signal. There were no other apparent problems.

Since then the SOS has errored multiple times, and is often associated with ICE problems, such as crashing, or Nav not being available. Google search suggested SOS errors are a known issue with VAGs and have been going on for years.

Talked to Service Centre about it when it went for the first service and they said it required a system software update, which it had done, and to be fair it's not happened since (service was early March). I don't have details of the update, but might be able to find out.

I had some of the same issues with ACC.

I had to turn off the predictive part as it would see a road sign on a side road for 40 and slam on the breakes when doing 70 down a dual carriagway.

Not turned it back on so no idea if still an issue but as all it is doing is adjusting speed to the road signs it sees, I guess it will still be doing it. Only really happened when it saw a speed sign for a road parallel to the one I was driving on.

I have also had it where it thought I was driving on the right and would slow down when trying to pass cars on the motorway, tapping the accelerator makes it ignore the car.

And I have had it decide to display the road signs in KPH not MPH so 70 mph displayed 110 and 30mph displayed 50, but never had it change speed when displaying KPH just stuck to the speed selected even before I turned the predictive part off.

It was in the dealers for those issues and others, not really sure what they did but it has not done either of those for a while, probably a software update by them.

The SOS is a known issue and it does need a software fix at the dealers.

Have you tried rebooting the infotainment system by holding the power button untill you hear a pop through the speakers.

I would speak to the dealers and explain that others have had the same issues and can they find out about any software updates to fix it.

I am not a fan of thw ACC. I have had the issue with the brakes slamming on when the car sees a lower limit sign on a slip road. It also annoys me because I don't tend to rush. I'm quite happy to set 55mph, then going into, say, a 30limit the brakes are harsh and uncomfortable, then instaed of reverting to the 55mph I had set, it goes up to 60 and  have to reset. So I just use it as a normal CC, but it still has a tendency to slam the brakes on as I pass a slower car on the motorway. Also, I'm not keen on the jerky braking on over-run downhill.

You can turn off the part of ACC that will change speed with road signs, then it will still slow down and speed up with traffic but not slam on the brakes when the speed signs change or go above the speed top speed you have selected.

Thank you. I had spotted this as a possible issue before ACC was any sort of a thing.

Your profile says you have a manual gearbox... so I'd suggest this is half the problem with that. With the DSG, it will change down and use gear braking as well, so it's not constantly jabbing on the brakes like I'm guessing it is on yours.

This is how I use it.

Thank you for your post as it's worked.  I've gone into the ACC menu and unticked the road sign recognition. I've driven twice with the ACC switched on and had no problems.  Okay, it means I have to manually set the speed limit but it's a minor issue in comparison to how the ACC was functioning in the past, which in my opinion was unpredictable and at time dangerous.

It is frustrating that when speaking to the service guys at my local dealership they said that the issue is unknown and unique to my car and yet I ask other Skoda owners who have the answer.

Now guess why they're often known as "Skoda Main Stealers".

@Mark@Hx They do not just employ anyone at Skoda / VW Group main dealers.

There has to be certain criteria they meet.

Excerpt from VAG Dealer employee application - Q1, On the board displayed, place each peg into its corresponding hole.

A 1, What board? This vehicle is not fitted with that feature - and even if it is, it is a 'feature' that the round peg always fits into the square hole.

Note to examiner, give extra point if candidate uses hammer to make pegs fit.
