Calliper painting time 😬

Featured Replies

So, just purchased new Brembo callipers to go with the Brembo disc & pad's, however, they are unpainted.

I have a Mk2 2007 Black Magic vRS estate with black wrapped Zenith's.

The vRS colours are greay, red, green.. So I'm thinking one of those colours

I'm currently thinking either something like polished gun metal grey or Apple Candy Red, either way I want the colour to really pop like a deep metallic paint..

Any help or advice?

Like how should I prep?

The caliper will be new the old bracket has been sanded back to shiny metal

Do I need multiple layers?

Primer, paint, protectent or with it needing VHT should it just be one paint and that's it?

I can't seem to find VHT Primar, am I right in thinking first I apply;

VHT Autotek AT0VHTA500 500ml VHT Paint - Aluminium https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004ZJIPJA/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_N80BXGED5CP64EQZSMZQ

This doesn't specify that it's a primer or base, however, I'm thinking that I will spray a couple of coats of this directly on to the calliper and bracket (after cleaning, masking and skuffing)

Then add a couple of layers of colour then decades then a clear coat?

Also I can find the pearlescent and flecked paint in a tin but not spray? Can you get VHT flecked spray?

Where to shop/what products?

Searching eBay and Amazon just returns multi listings when you whittle it down there is very little choice

I admit I haven't done enough research but just passive searching isn't giving me the info needed.

How much are you paying for us to actively search for you?

I don't believe either of these are available as caliper paint.

I've previously hand painted from a 250ml eBay can and found it sufficient for two coats on four calipers. This was 'on the car' and the only prep was to ensure everything was meticulously clean. No primer was used and the colour seemed to last for quite a while.

Shame I can't remember what colour was ordered though.

Yeah, I think I have found a place I can get the paint, however, it is pro stuff and will require the correct equipment and they only sell in bulk 😓

Thanks 👍

Thank you, that is still a great help as at this point I'm probably going to do the same, I think if I use a silver first then add the best red/green that I can find and cross my fingers 🤞

I don't think I can get the finish I was after but reassuring to know that no primer was needed and that 250ml will be all I need.

Thanks all,

I have now managed to do some more research and it would seem that the kind of candy paint I was thinking of just isn't really suitable for callipers.

I'm going to get the paint tomorrow and have them sprayed when everything has arrived, I'll post up the results when finished 👍

Speaking of which the document link you sent me has continued to be a great help, so thank you.

Searching for "brake paint" on the bay lists many options which could be used as is or mixed for your desired colour, they do not require a primer or top coat.

I don't personally know much about this subject, but there is something called t'internet which has info from those who claim to

For example, there is an article here https://www.autoguide.com/best-brake-caliper-paints where they start with

"1. Editor's Pick: G2 High Temperature Brake Caliper Paint System "

Which sounds like a good place to start (colours:  black, orange, silver, blue, red, white, purple, pink, green, gold, lime green, mustang redfire, mustang vista blue, and mustang windevil blue).

I note that you don't explicitly what criteria you are judging your colour on. I'm guessing anyone who is primarily interested in dissipating heat will go for as dark as they can, others will be wondering what those two Mustang colours are, among other things.

I’ve always just used hammerite,, just 2 coats with an artist’s brush but as yours are Brembo I’d powder coat em,, my last 4 cars have always been done in hammerite smooth finish,,

focus 1.8 mk2.5 blue —- calliper red

Mondeo st mk3 performance blue—-calliper  red

focus st170 mk1.5 imperial blue—calliper red

never had any problems with the paint coming off and unless you take it on a track the brakes don’t get super hot and scorch

Yes, however, it would seem that t'tinternet is (shockingly) full if misinformation or "Fake News" as a well informed and highly intelligent former US president may have previously mentioned.

I have continued researching and it turns out that the world of paint is more complex than I knew.

G2 High temp is recommended by quite a few YouTube'ers, however, it looks like I can get the deep candy flecked finish using K2 primer, Candy colour and then clear coat, the problem I see is that is contradictory to what others say in terms of using VHT only. Interesting point you make on using the colour itself to help dissipating the heat.

Windevil blue - seems perfectly obvious to me, self explanatory really. 🙄

I'm going to carry on digging, I have the old caliper as a test sample to play with, I will post up my findings and results if anyone is interested 👍

plenty of candy colours to choose from, ideal for brake calipers

Thanks 111zah111,

I have used Hammerite black smooth on all my other components like wishbone and steering knuckle, and if I am going to go with a solid colour that is exactly what I would get, however, I am going to explore a bit first and see what other options are before reaching for the hammer.

Sweet ride, I love that  Audi Daytona Grey!

Ill be keeping my progress posted

At first I thought these paints no good as I would require VHT paint for calipers, however, I think that it's the "2k clear with hardener" that makes the difference as neither the primer nor the paint are High Temp.

seems link has changed, type "high temp candy" into ebay and loads will pop up from same seller 😊

Hi

Thank you to everyone, I'm just posting a progress report for anybody interested.

As you can see I have my old caliper off and I have sanded it down until shinny, I will be keeping the bracket and using the caliper as a test sample for painting.

It would seem there are several schools of thought:

- Brembo official advice - Don't paint them unless your a pro.. Esp if they look like a banana - Actual advice 🙄

- Use spray labelled specifically as Brake Caliper Paint, or use Very High Temperature (VHT) - 2 or 3 coats no primer no clear coat (there are paints like Engine Enamel, Flame Proof, BBQ ect but I have watched vids with people saying these products generated bad results so I'm not going to use them) - This is the the most sensible option but from what I can find its just solid colours like this

Green - JENOLITE Brake Caliper Paint - Red - 400ml (Restore & Transform Car Brake Calipers) : Amazon.co.uk: Automotive

Red - MP Essentials Coat, Protect & Enhance XHT Xtremely High Temperature Paint (up to 650c) for Engine blocks, Exhausts & Manifold (Blue) : Amazon.co.uk: Automotive

- Use a build kit - If I want to achieve a candy type finish it requires building layers and is not VHT, the work around is found in kits like this:

Deco Color Brake Caliper Deluxe 3 Items KIT Drum Primer Paint Protective Clear Coat Spray Gloss Moto Sport CAR Tuning Vehicle (Silver Deluxe kit) : Amazon.co.uk: Automotive

CANDY CALIPER KITS HIGH TEMP CANDY APPLE GREEN + PRIMER+BASE 400ML SPRAY CAN X3 | eBay

or on YouTube like this:

or

Where by they build up these layers and do things like; flake, pearlescent ,metallic, candy..

Examples I have seen being used;

Black, Gray, Aluminium, Silver, Gold, White, Base Primer -

Etch Primer -

Adhesion Promoter -

Anticorrosive Primer -

and that's just the primers.... The new calipers arrive tomorrow and I have the day off, so I will make a decision tomorrow and let you all know what I get

Yes I will probably go for a build kit, my concern was that on most it doesn't say whether the primer or colour are VHT

CANDY CALIPER KITS HIGH TEMP CANDY APPLE GREEN + PRIMER+BASE 400ML SPRAY CAN X3 | eBay

This is probably the one will go with as it says all layers are VHT (I would be a little sceptical as other sellers say that they are VHT, however, only become VHT once they put on the final protective coat. This seller gives a lot more info than most.

Ill be making my decision tomorrow ill keep posted

I'd agree with Brembo's advice for already painted calipers (eg Brembo, Porsche carbon discs or carbon ceramic): Otherwise use VHT (I've burnt fingers on hot discs and caliers before).

Thanks,

The calipers have arrived and you are absolutely correct they are already painted

So exactly as @KenONeill says they have arrived with Silver base already painted on.

First impressions aren't fantastic, the caliper arrived simply in a box that was slightly too small, the box was sealed and I purchased from Autodoc so I don't question the authenticity, but I would expect it to be better packaged especially the piston boot and other rubber bits, also, I know that it is reconditioned (its hard to get a good photo) but there are a few pits and dinks, finally on my little rant, there isn't a single Brembo logo on any of the parts not even the rubber bits, which is brand snobbery but the old ones had the VW, Audi and Ate logos (I'm Skoda but at least some logos where there)

Hopefully you can see in the pic's the silver paint is on and is a bright silver (which is a bonus and ill explain why in a mo), and textured, I was expecting a smooth finish not this hammered texture, this changes tings..

My plan was;

Base - Silver or Gold VHT - MP Essentials Coat, Protect & Enhance XHT Xtremely High Temperature Paint (up to 650c) for Engine blocks, Exhausts & Manifold (Clear Transparent) : Amazon.co.uk: Automotive

Colour - Green Pearl - Xtremeauto Aerosol Spray CAN GRASS GREEN PEARL Heat Resistant Paint 400ML… : Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools

Brembo Decal - 10x - Brembo High Quality Brake Caliper Decal Stickers - 5 SIZES - BLACK | eBay

Clear cote - MP Essentials Coat, Protect & Enhance XHT Xtremely High Temperature Paint (up to 650c) for Engine blocks, Exhausts & Manifold (Clear Transparent) : Amazon.co.uk: Automotive

I figured this might get me a bit of depth whilst keeping to VHT to be on the safe side

Or as @111zah111 pointed out, I could go with this kit - CANDY CALIPER KITS HIGH TEMP CANDY APPLE GREEN + PRIMER+BASE 400ML SPRAY CAN X3 | eBay

Other options would be wrapping, but I'm sceptical on the heat and they don't do purl or candy so i don't think this is a solution

Superwrap High Gloss Vinyl Spray Wrap In A Can! Kit For Emblems, Grills, Calipers And Wheels - Durable, Peelable Spray Wrap - Vehicle Customization (Gymkhana Green) : Amazon.co.uk: Automotive - I am using Superwrap on my alloys so I know it's good stuff

or

FullColors Kit x2 Spray Paint for Brake Caliper 400 ml – Easy Application – Professional Finish (Colours to Choose From) (Lime Green) : Amazon.co.uk: Automotive

However, now that I have seen the new caliper I can forgo the idea of needing a primer as it is already bright silver which is what you need for candy. Good stuff. But I am wondering if this texture changes anything, for example will it require a bit more paint or clearcoat to build up to a smooth surface? Getting the decals in place will be a bit more difficult on this surface also.

I think I will go with the kit, I am going to message the seller and see what there advice is.

Ill keep posted
