Spare Tyre well has screw in body work that punctured the tyre

Featured Replies

Hi all

I cam to take out the spare tyre and as I did it got punctured from a screw that is sticking out. I have put the images of it below. Any ideas about that screw? I am unsure how that has appeared.

I noticed at the other side there is also a hole in the same place but has not screw on that part.

Regards

I'd suggest looking under the car to see what it's attaching to the underside...

I can't imagine it's a factory thing so a previous owner or garage have done something stupid by the looks.

Malicious.

Is there anything attached to the underside of that screw? If not, perhaps some scrote thought it was the fuel tank and was trying for a free top up but was disturbed in the act.

They'd get really disturbed if I caught them!

He would have to be a patient scrote because that looks to be a 4mm max self drilling screw.

It's more likely to be something that was/is attached or malicious, I would check the inside sidewall of the rear tyres for the same attack.

I would suspect it is supporting a loose heat shield and the mechanic didn't think it through.

Good call!

heat shield bodge seems the most likely...

why would someone maliciously crawl under the car with a self tapping tekscrew and put it through the wheel well to cause a puncture. thats way more time and effort than any malicious attack is going to be given

It seems it is for the heatshield and looks as though the mechanic has put that in to try to resolve the issue they saw and didn't do it correctly.😠

Was this repaired within your ownership?

Youd think they would of heard the hissing and wondered what is was... or then again, if they just wanna stick a random screw through the trunk then they probably didnt care enough to check...

I am contacting the garage tomorrow who have worked on it, they mentioned last time I saw them, 4something was rattling, and I asked and they said the only thing they could see was the undermount engine cover/shield which was loose. They said they had screwed another bolt as one was missing. They didn't say anything else about the heatshield, if they botchily secured the heatshield on. It has happened within the ownership.

What are your thoughts on what it would be attached to?

Because they would have been harbouring a grudge against whoever owned the car at the time, the suggestion was that it would have been done in conjunction with one of the rear tyres, the logic (malicious) being that the self drilling screw would create a slow puncture on the rear tyre, that it would deflate when driving and the spare would lose its air when the victim got it out to replace the punctured wheel.

Of course in this instance and with what has subsequently been written the rattly heat shield is almost certainly the reason but for those who scoff at the malicious suggestion lets just say that when you have been deliberately screwed over in business you learn a bit about sabotage.

I'd also have suggested that it was attached to something underneath and asked for pics for clarification but exhaust related would also have been high on the list for me along with brake or fuel line - perhaps where a bodge had been done to fix a broken clip or something. I wouldn't jump straight in with accusations of malintent without knowing more.
