Android Auto for phone screens will stop working soon.

Featured Replies

I got the above message in the AA app on my phone screen, today.

AA was not connected to the Infotainment unit (MIB3) at the time.

I have read that Google Assistant driving mode is an option for those who don't have an AA enabled vehicle - but cannot find anything about an option for those of us with an AA enabled vehicle.

I gave up trying to get AA wirelessly and now it seems as if the wired version won't work soon.

Can anyone throw any light on the matter.

It's only the phone version that will stop. Wired versions (and wireless if available) will continue so you can rest easy.

I had my wireless android auto on this evening on my way home

That's good news.

What I am wondering is - if the phone version is not working, then what is there that can be wired to the Infotainment unit?

I think, by 'soon', they mean in weeks or months.

I think that is for when phones are used in a holder on the dashboard or windscreen etc - Driving Assistant will let you run navigation on your phone screen.

I am querying what Google navigation system can be wired to the Infotainment unit.

I just realised how old I am getting - I have little idea what the above 6 posts refer to - but I don't think it concerns me so thats ok! 😂

+1      Life was much simpler years ago. A car radio then had two knobs one for on/off  the other for tuning and some presets if you bought the delux version.

Nowadays unless you read the manual little chance of getting anything at all - Its called progress!

I don't use it but understand Google are replacing it with 'Driving Assistant' which seems to be built in to the Android System.

The menu system for Google stuff on an Android phone is labyrinthine. Who could find that, even if they knew they needed to look for it?!

the mere fact that I don't have to unfold a physical map every 30min to figure out my next turn (when going on a long trip) is indeed progress

now I just enter an address in my phone (doesn't even matter if its in another country), and phone will figure out the best route to get there (in most cases), I just connect the phone to my car and have the directions on cars screen - want to find a petrol station or restaurant ? no problem, 2 taps and I get a listing of all stations/restaurants that are open and don't require going off route

It will even warn me of road closures or traffic jams and offer me alternative routes

also I can use internet radio for spots with bad radio analogue signal

can't get much easier than that

Don't need navigation/internet radio? Ok, just use the cars built in infotainment system as you did years ago

I don't understand how anyone can claim life was much simpler years ago..

I was emphasising that car radios in particular are far more complex than they need be. In days gone by there was no need to take ones eyes off the road to change a station etc. There are far too many distractions in modern cars that could lead to accidents

Yes SatNav is indeed very useful but a great deal of so called improvements are IMHO completely unnecessary:

E.g. keyless entry

Auto handbrake

All add to considerable costs and potential expensive failures.

Embrace progress. 😉

The radio station can be changed via the steering wheel or voice controls in most cars nowadays too so that doesn't mean taking your eyes off the road.

Keyless entry (with a security updated key) is effortless and I wouldn't buy any car without an auto handbrake as that also enhances the driving experience.

I can however remember (a long time ago) never wanting to have an automatic car as thinking they were a waste of time - that theory has been turned on it's head too!

My understanding is that this new development will affect drivers who use their mobile phone to look at navigation on the phone screen while it's in a hands-free cradle.
If you connect the phone (wired or wirelessly) to the car using Android Auto then you shouldn't notice any change. You will still see everything as normal on your infotainment screen.

In my Karoq I have the choice of three navigation systems:

- In-built Skoda sat nav

- Google Maps via Android Auto

- Waze via Android Auto

My first preference is Waze. If you haven't used it, download it from the Google Play store and give it a try.

Thanks for getting the post back on track and providing clarity.

Waze looks good.

How do you select Waze to run via AA - Google maps is my only in phone navigation app, so it connects via AA by default.

If you install Waze on your phone then by pressing the circular home button on your car screen you should be able to see Waze as another navigation option.

After selection it will stay as the default until you change it back.

Hi Toolie

There are many things I like about Waze. It's a community-based program where the users can report incidents, so for example you'll be driving down a motorway / road and it might alert you that 'there's a speed camera up ahead' or 'there's a vehicle broken down on the hard shoulder up ahead'. You can also set it to let you know if you're exceeding the speed limit.

Waze was bought by Google but it's kept its own identity. This website has a comparison of Waze v Google Maps - https://www.ridester.com/waze-vs-google-maps/

There's a fair bit of customisation in the settings menu. One of the first things to do after you've installed it onto your mobile phone is choose from all the different navigation voices available. To change the voice on Waze, tap My Waze > Settings > Voice & sound. I like 'English (UK) Kate' as she includes street names, eg, 'turn onto the A580 East Lancashire Road'. This Youtube video gives a good overview of the voice settings:

I forgot to add, driving down a road in Staffordshire last weekend Waze said 'Watch out, large pothole reported up ahead.' It saved me from some serious wheel damage.

If only Waze didn't teke me down many many dangerous single track country lanes it would be a contender (for me). As it is - it is pretty unusable if you live in a rural location. I did ask the Waze forums and a solution for "Avoiding Narrow UK Roads" was not forthcoming when I last gave it a spin.

Google maps (in my location) is abysmal at being accurate on road closures (something to do with Devon County Council's link from the OneNetwork to Google not working as it should so that is out too for me (as being reliable).  I just went back to TomTom Go which (for all its faults) now works with Android Auto and importantly the traffic seems to be quite good and the routing seems to be more sensible than Google Maps and Waze. you can also plan a route online and have it sent to TomTom Go on the phone and it all seems to be quite nice.  The only thing that (at the moment) is not working is to be able to ask it to "Avoid a roadblock ahead" via the car screen. To do that you have to pick up the phone and do it and it is then reflected on the Car screen.

The downside.... £20 per year but hey - its only money.   better than being routed down a crummy farm track during harvest season or holiday season and better than being told to go down such and such a road when you know full well that it's closed.

Some clarification on the original question in this thread.

There are two versions of Android Auto - and it is Android Auto for Phone Screens that is being replaced by Android Driving Mode. This is the one that uses your phone screen as a display while you're driving. Apparently the version that uses your car's infotainment screen is NOT being discontinued.

Absolutely correct.

AA has stopped working, stand alone, on my phone, but continues to work when connected by cable to the infotainment unit.

Android Auto had an update around 8th August 2023 and since that date AA has opened automatically when my phone is connected by cable.

Previously I had to open the 'AA for phone screens' app on my phone before connecting.

The 'AA for phone screens' app is no longer required and I have deleted it.

What are other people's experience of this?

This should have been the standard from the start.

AA for phone screens was meant to give you an Android Auto-like experience without needing your car to support it. Just start the AA for phone and it's lika a mini infotainment screen, even better put into landscape mode. This was the idea.

Since Android 10, Android Auto is now built into the phone as a technology, which means you no longer have to install a separate app from the Play Store to use Android Auto with your car display.

You can still customise how you want Android Auto to operate and which icons you want to appear on the display. Go Settings > Apps > Android Auto.
