Radio turning on full blast, while car is sitting locked on driveway!

Featured Replies

I am going to have to call the dealers on this one, but in the interim I wondered if anyone else has had this and if so what was the cure (if any)?

A couple of times in the last month or so the car, while sitting locked on the drive and not having been used at all that day, has turned the radio on all by itself and sits there thumping away until we happen to notice and run out to stop it.   The volume level is far above any that I would have it on while driving.

The only thing we can think that might be a contributing factor is that (as far as I can recall) both times it's been a hot sunny day and the drive is in full sun for most of it - perhaps the strip below the touchscreen with the on/off button and volume slider gets too hot as it's all black?

Just thought I'd ask in case anyone has had similar - did try searching the forum but couldn't easily see anything similar.

It's a 70 plate SE Technology if that helps or affects anything.

Yup, happened to us in May.

The same day as it happened the last time, I was able to record this:

It first started last summer after one of the system updates. Media unit reboot (holding down power button) does not solve it. It is quite a dangerous situation since the volume constantly creeps up during driving and it happened to us one time that the touch power button was not registering touches and we couldn't turn the stereo off, but keep scrolling the volume down on the steering wheel.

Due to other issues (early HW, travel assist issues etc.), the media unit computer was replaced in order to accept the new system version. Then the steering wheel got replaced two times and now, we are on version 1896 and it hasn't happened (yet).

Hi, Just read your problem and absolutely the same thing is happening with the my Octavia in August 2023.  Car locked, and same hot, sunny conditions in the driveway, and the volume way up above what I would normally select.   Doesn't seem to happen at night when the temperature has dropped though.

It only seems to have happened since the last OTA update, but that might just be coincidence.  No solution found yet but it's driving me nuts!    I'm none too popular with the neighbours either.

Sorry,   I should have said I was referring to MCG1975's problem, and something I just remembered which was a bit weird.  When I noticed that the car was blaring away in the drive, I went out to unlock it but still had the key in a Faraday pouch.  I didn't realise this until I touched the driver's door handle and the 'Kissy' system failed to operate.  No problem there.   However, what I did notice was that, surprisingly, even though the car didn't unlock, and with the key still firmly in the pouch, the radio stopped playing and the screen went blank, apart from the 'Home' and 'Menu' icons remaining illuminated.  This just shouldn't have happened with the pouch preventing any connection to the car.

Just wondered if anyone else had had something similar?

Well, the same problem occurred again late yesterday evening, so not temperature related it would seem.  Car locked in the drive but the radio came on at high volume so I had to dash out and switch it off.  No subsequent repeat in the night, but really annoying.  This only seems to happen every few days and also appears to be the only software glitch with the car at moment. Worth repeating that I never experienced this issue prior to the latest OTA upgrade.
Other than this, the car is great, except, obviously, for lack of physical control switches for the fundamental operations.

This is what you get when you let 21 yr old design ‘experts’ have way too much say in the board room.

So this has happened to me twice today, and yes making me real popular with the neighbours too lol..

yup its a hot sunny day.. half 5 and currently 24 degrees..

but we’ve had hotter earlier this week and its not happened.

was there any fix found for this?

Yup,  same thing still going on with my Octavia 2 years down the line.  No dealer seems able to fix this and Skoda don’t appear to acknowledge that the fault is as widespread as it obviously is from all the similar complaints in the forum.
Just wonder if anyone who’s bought the recent (2024) updated Octavia has experienced the problem, or has Skoda finally found a fix but are keeping quiet about it from a sense of acute embarrassment.

My 2020 mk4 threw a complete infotainment hissy fit on holiday in June.  Driving along when the radio started up spontaneously and rapidly climbed to max volume.  Couldn’t switch it off, and as fast as I scrolled back the volume, it started climbing back up again.  At the same time the multimedia screen was switching itself on and off, randomly displaying the nav map, the clock (different variations) or the radio page as it saw fit.  The whole system just couldn’t be turned off for more than a few seconds before switching itself back on again.   Skoda Assist sent the AA to help.  They were able to get the system to stabilise, with just the clock showing,  but the car had to go to the local dealer.  I got charged over £100 for a complete reboot and update (1941) which appeared to resolve the problem for a while.  On the way home, I found that once or twice the radio would start up un-commanded when I started the car but could at least be switched off.   Otherwise no problems…… until this week during the hot weather when the radio started coming on again ( thankfully not at max volume) when the car was locked and sitting in the drive.  Aaaaaagh!!!.   I’m convinced that a design fault and high temperatures have rather more to do with this problem than software, as update ‘fixes’ rarely seem to produce a permanent cure.
The only ‘cure’ which seems to have worked for me is to put a reflective screen shield in the windscreen whenever I leave the car, and to put a folded-in-half large soft detailing/cleaning sheet (Supagard)  over the whole infotainment screen to absorb the heat.  When practical, I also crack open all four windows to try to keep the interior heat down.  So far, by doing this, especially in this last week of UK hot weather, I’ve not had a single instance the radio starting.   Not the greatest of fixes, but at least the neighbours are happy and I can sleep at night!
I do hope Skoda come up soon with something permanent to fix the infotainment problem.   It really does ruin what is otherwise an excellent car.

Good luck with your own ‘fix’!

I think we’re on the same page here.. it threw a hissy fit today with the random on off on satnav off on radio off welcome screen off on apple car play etc..but could also hear the touch tones as it did it so i’m wondering if its something expanding inside and causing ghost presses for the screen and touch strip etc.. i did the same as i was doing some project work at work in a secure compound so i left windows half down and covered the infotainment unit with a folded fleece too i had in the boot.. it seemed to insulate it enough from the direct sun for today at least.

So.. update on this as it may help someone..

as i have a couple of years warranty left on mine, i enquired at skoda garage because:

radio was getting too frisky and turning on even on cooler days when car was parked up.

when driving you would on occasion have to battle with the infotainment using the steering wheel volume control to turn it down.

managed on most occasions to get videos of it happening and i think the winner was that you could hear the ‘touch’ clicks as it was ramping the volume up or randomly selecting things which made me think it was more mechanical than software..

took a month to get an appointment but all credit to the dealership - they said as soon as they saw the vids that they agreed it was a physical thing and liaised with Skoda head honchos to get it replaced.. initially they were saying it would be software but as mentioned, the hearing of the clicks was a clincher to change their minds..

so if you have this issue and you have some sort of warranty on the car, get vids of it and make sure you can hear the clicks.

not a single issue since they replaced the unit..

i’ve not checked what software/hardware revisions it has now compared to previous but i can check and post if need be.
