2022 Octavia reverse camera option

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I went to the Skoda dealership today, i am getting a really good deal on a brand new Octavia 'Style' trim level with some extra options except for reverse camera. For some reason, the dealership says they can install a camera for free but it will be displayed in the rearview mirror and not in the infotainment system, so my question is, do we have a kit that fits this car and displays directly on the big screen instead of the rearview mirror?

All help is most welcome! Thanks

i am awaiting my car and it does not have a reverse camera.i was thinking when i get i would retro fit,now with what you say i have have second thoughts.i am sure i while back someone was fitting reverse cameras and give a full vision on inf screen.i could be wrong but it will be interesting to see.

I had initially thought that the reverse camera with full screen display would be standard as the car is already highly priced, my kia sportage of 2019 cost me less money but has the full screen 8 inch reverse camera display, so...

I am trying to find a company here that can retro fit such a camera to the car, that eould be awesome!

I'm afraid that would be a mirror on top of the original mirror, since your dealer probably doesn't want to bother with coding an original camera into the system of the car. Another downside I read about is that when coding (retrofitting) a reverse camera, it's highly likely that when a major infotainment update is performed, the camera might be disabled. That's because the OTA update is tailored to the factory specs of the car... Which means one might need to code the camera into the system again (and again...).

Octavia MY21 had the reverse camera optional for Style trim; by the end of 2021 they asked me if I would give up that option when they were sure I would receive the MY22 (or even MY23). So I agreed to the Addendum to the Contract, hoping it would lead to less delay - since current Style trim no longer offers reverse cam as an option. However, the dealer told me they will be able to install and activate the camera with on-screen display, but I should beware of the price - it will be much more expensive than the factory one...

My vRS would have been more highly priced but the camera was an extra.

The rear sensors are very accurate when reversing anyway, I’ve never come close to hitting anything with them. My fathers XC60 has a built in camera, nice to have but by no means essential.

Isn’t there a plug and play version from AliExpress for the MkIV, like has been successfully fitted to many MkIII cars (including mine)?

This is definitely not the case, when you correctly using main dealer software code the camera using whats called an SVM code it sends the signal to the main vw servers, your complete file they hold for your car is modified to show a reverse camera. At this point anything further will know no different than 'reverse camera fitted' so everything should be okay. Now if its done without the main dealer tool there is a good chance this could happen.

Dear lord no! This is a terrible idea, theyre proposing pulling apart a perfectly good car to fit a cheap ****ty reverse camera, get them to order the genuine retrofit kit, fit it, code it and be done with it. Fully oem that way.

There is many plug and play knock of versions that are fairly low quality, Mk4 is different to mk3 in many ways including MIB3 radio, ethernet signal transmission and tighter module security.

That's another aftermarket kit.

This is an example of the OEM version: https://www.carsystems.eu/skoda-octavia-nx-4-gen-rear-high-line-camera-kit-retrofit,id4406.html

Please note, they do various camera versions depending on LHD/RHD, which headunit you have and if you want a washer jet. I'd also expect it to be cheaper from other suppliers :)

One can easily find aftermarket cam-kits on aliexpress somewhere around 100 Euro, with the wiring included. However, installing and coding it is not plug-and-play.

Wow, i thought i could just use any kit, i did not think LHD/RHD would affect it..in my country it is RHD, i already chose my vehicle, i am getting a special edition Octavia Style that has been factory configured with some extra options as it was a vehicule meant to be displayed for the launching of the brand, so i get 18" wheels, an extra airbag in the dash, blind spot monitoring, two spoke steering wheel (three spoke on all octavias here), and other options which i am yet to discover😁

When you say coding, what does it imply and how complicated is it? Can it be done using the coding functionality on the Carly obd scanner?

It could be done via OBD11 or VCSD for Octavia before MK4 (up to mk3.5), but I haven't seen any tutorial or step-by-step guide for MK4 so far; so not sure about how complicated it might be on the new system.
But as @ApertureS said earlier, if you don't do it the proper way (sending the new car config to VAG servers), any major system update might "uncode" the camera.

The agency here will not do it for me, so how do i ensure the config is sent to VAG servers if coded by an individual? Anything particular i should look out for?

They need to be an approved repaired using ODIS - no other software will do it.

But to be honest, ETKA doesnt even list a genuine reverse camera retrofit for the 2022 yet so you may have to wait a few months.

I just had a second look at the in-car-install kit as I was curious how it could work without coding.

It's basically looks like a £30 Chinese camera (based on the connectors) and a LVCDS display switcher.

The silver box connects between the headunit 'brains' and the display. It normally passes the video signal straight through. When it gets a CAN-bus message to say reverse is selected, it takes over the display to show the reverse camera output. Based on the images, it probably also understands the parking sensor/steering CAN-bus messages to give the proximity overlay and moving guidelines.

In short, it means you will only get an image but there will be no controls or adjustability like an OEM camera:

It's down to you if you're happy with that level of functionally :)

Oh😳, that is not what i want😭, i was expecting high quality components to fit on the car, not cheap chinese stuff🥺

The "intelligent Parking Assist System" module seems to be pretty generic too, these both look near identical but are being sold for BMW or Mercs:

https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Camera-Interface-for-Mercedes-BENZ-NTG_1600129774946.html

Completely different to the OEM system which is just a camera and wire, for example this from Kufatc:

image.png.97f7ed93735176a8b7f098b2a1541e00.png

No idea how well their 'coding dongle' works but you would need either OBDeleven or a dealer to unlock SFD first.

While I agree that the coding could be lost if a dealer does a reset. I don't think I've heard of a OTA update resetting coding changes yet...

If i were to buy a kit online for reverse camera, which one would you recommend? A friend has vagcom and says he can code it to work..also the car i am ordering has rear parking sensors only, can i add an extra 4 sensors to the front bumper and connect to the same system to make it work with the rear ones?

  • 1 year later...

Could someone please tell me how get the options A, B and C in the screen as can seen in the picture of post 17-6-2022?

Thanks in advanced
