Columbus and speakers problem

Featured Replies

Hi all,

The Columbus unit of my trusty old superb died. The screen stopped working, other than that it seemed to still work. Tried resets add so on, but the screen is dead.

A original replacement was terribly expensive here, so I opted for a cheaper solution and bought an aftermarket android unit for a fraction of the cost but on paper multiples better performance.

Wasn't that difficult to install. And while more performant still crappy UI and integration. But well well... At first I had no sound at all. Not even noise on speakers. After disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes the left (driver side) speakers came to life, but after a number of firmware updates I still have no sound on the right side (front and rear).

Does anyone here have any ideas what it could be? Does anyone know the wiring / fuses for a 2011 superb fitted with Columbus. It's a Conti unit. I can supply more information if there are variants that I don't know of.

Any ideas would be appreciated. I don't think the speakers are dead or broken as they worked after the Columbus unit broke down. I triggered a call from the instrument cluster and the speakers worked fine. The mic did not. Different routing I assume.

Hope anyone still bothers with these old versions. Thanks.

Is your car equipped with Sound System?

I read a bit on the forum to understand what you are asking. If I understood things correct, there are two versions.  One with 8 speakers and one with 10? And the Columbus was delivered with both these configurations? And if you have the 10 speaker system there should be an amplifier under driver seat? Correct me if I misunderstood it.

To tell you the truth, I don't remember what I bought back then. If I got it right, then I can check if I have anything that looks like an amp under the seat. Is there any other way identify the different versions?

Sorry for the dirty state of things and the terrible exposure.  This ECU was under the driver seat. P_20220616_165452.thumb.jpg.0b7c03e90f6d86f97b1d08b73c109c08.jpg

Yes, the Audience sound system. This is also the reason I haven't got a Head Unit.

I have tried to identify a seller that confirms that the Android unit works with av external amplifier. The unit I tried, did not work, even if I did the battery-trick. I only got sound in some speakers and lots of static.

Any tips regarding units that work or resellers that have good price/performance and is can be trusted with questions/return policy, are greatly appreciated.

I even looked up what it would cost to refurbish the unit I have, but the lowest price I got was 800€, with no guarantees of success. I can buy a old unit from junkyards for 350€, but that also feels quite expensive for legacy technology - even if I much prefer the analogue dials to digital soft buttons.

A lot of aftermarket units have any issue with OEM sound systems. You must either get the unit that is guranteed to work with OEM sound system or return to OEM system - either Columbus RNS510 or Bolero / Amundsen MIB STD2 PQ unit.
