Mechatronic unit failure .. :(

Recommended Posts

Just been trying to find out information to see what experiences other have had with their DSG gearbox.  I've seen that some have had issues?  I have a late 2017 2.0 TDI 7 seat with a 7 speed gearbox.

I'm just wondering if a software update might have caused the issue.  Last week it went in for a service and apparently they also did "recall" work which happened to be a software update .. not sure exactly the nature of the update but anyway.  4 Days later driving along warning light gear box in emergency mode .. there was also a message saying that unusually high energy usage??  lost odd numbered gears.  Seemed to reset itself when the engine was switched off but the issue returned on the return journey.  Next day booked car in for diagnostics but would be another 4 days.  Still needed to drive the car so did do but cautiously .. happened again but this time only had two gears 2 & 4 .. this was the Saturday .. didn't have the issue at all the rest of the week.  Took the car in for diagnostics today .. confirmed it was the mechatronics unit .. 😞 .. thing is I'm now sure the car is shifting differently .. and more smoothly .. since the diagnostics!

Any advice would be welcomed.

@AngelinaAsk in writing what the nature was of any software updates.

Ask, What was the RECALL or Recall Action or Service Campaign for?

http://skoda-auto.com/services/recall-actions

It is your car,

your property,

it is not a Data Protection issue where they can know and you can not.

??

How many miles has your car done & is it over 40,000 miles,  if so was the DSG serviced @ or before 40,000 miles?

This is different being a 1.5tsi

Hi There,

My 2017 Kodiaq DSG has also just had the Mechatronic fail, lost odd-numbered gears. My car has done 58k miles, and has always been serviced. Just been quoted £3000 for a new one to be fitted! I was just wondering how you got on?

There is a Facebook group dedicated to UK Kodiaq owners.

Something is amiss, there has been on average one or two mechatronics failures a week for the last few months.

Does anyone know if the Mechatronics programming is in any way linked to the ignition key programming?

Had the mechatronics unit on my 2018 Kodiaq replaced last November and a couple of weeks back I tried using the second key for the first time since last summer, and found it not activating anything.

Replaced the battery twice, swapped the batteries with the good key which still works, but nothing at all from the second key.

Bizarrely, if both keys are in the car at the same time, it comes up as “key not detected”. Open the door, lean out so the duff key is three feet outside and hey presto, the good key (which is still in the car) is recognised and the car starts!

The good key is the one which was with the car when it was in for the mechatronics unit to be replaced so could have been reprogrammed if this was required, and would explain why the second key is behaving so strangely.

You may just need to re sync the key again...   I seem to recall the procedure is in the owners manual...   Press any button on the remote then unlock using the key in the hidden lock barrel in the end of the drivers door handle.

I’ve been waiting for the Škoda garage to fix this problem for 8 weeks so far. Done 52,000 miles.
Part still not arrived. Quoted £1482.00 but I’m sure the garage will hoick the price up further when they finally fix it.
I am ****ed off and my next car will be Japanese!

I’m not mechanical but the last time I phoned to ask, I think the guy said it was the mechatronic unit they were waiting for.

The £1482 was the quote I agreed to at the beginning when the AA dropped the car off at their garage.
i’m sorry I can’t tell you my DSG number.

(The AA guy stuck a little gadget under the dashboard and the fault number was the one he suspected. He said it was common. I could only get gears 1, 3, 5, 7, but not 2, 4, and 6)

@ballcock

What car / Engine Size, ?  That helps give an idea of what gearbox you are talking about.

That is a bit cheap for a New MCU & fitted, compared to what others are paying.

?

Is this a main dealership?

There is sadly a growing number of reported issues with 7 speed wet clutch DSG.  DQ381,s.  MCU failures / leaks.

An issue that really needs more attention given possibly by motoring journalists.

VW Group / Skoda will always says just a small number / percentage.

Those companies offering repairs / refurbished MCU services might well know better.

I can not believe that VW Group are so far getting away with the failures in other world regions.

Maybe in Australia or New Zealand there will be a court or government agency that tears them a new one.

Maybe in the USA or Canada.

@ballcock  was that service at 40,000 miles done correctly might be the issue.  Were you advised to have it serviced then?    If it is a DQ381 the recommendation, guidelines, schedule from Skoda / VW is at 80,000 miles.  Sooner might be sensible.     But that would be by someone that does it correctly.    Just suggesting this as a possibility.    ?? Who was it that said a oil change was needed at 40,000 and was the filter changed?

@ballcock  do you have an invoice for the service showing parts used, this matters to see what was used as it is not the same as a DQ250.  I would be wanting to know that the correct service procedure was done.  They know which Tech or Fitter did the device.

Maybe that’s the problem. I had the DSG oil change done by a local garage specialising in VW cars. The 40,000 miles guidance was as per  a Karoq maintenance schedule dated 2021 I had downloaded.

Maybe they screwed it up.

@ballcock  I fear they might have.

There are videos showing just how it is done.

This Chart has mislead so many.   Skoda.

Then the TPS one, 80,000 miles.  But no filter.  Ridiculous.

From the ones on the Skoda groups on Facebook, the mechatronics failures seem completely disconnected to whether they’ve been serviced or not.

That would be because not a single owner that has reported issues has one near or over 80,000 miles covered.  Some are under a year old. Many in manufacturers warranty.  Ones have been having faults in Australia and New Zealand that have posted on here and with different models of Skoda.   The issue is in models in other VW Brands.      Vorsprung Dutch Technik.     Eventually the motoring press will ask VW group WTF are you doing?

Vantage Skoda Morecambe finally installed a new Mechatronic after I’d been waiting 9 weeks. The Service Manager phoned me.

Funny, it happened just after I wrote complaining to CEO Skoda and copied it to Customer  Services.

I told them it was disappointing that my car had done just 52,000 miles and 5 years.

That, an MOT, Oil Change and two new front discs and pads came to £2,208.37.

I suppose it’s cheaper to keep fixing bust DSGs every 5 years than buying a new car!
