Creaking rear suspension

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I've owned a 2018 Octavia 1.5tsi DSG estate for nearly a year now. I've had no issues and it drives really well. The only thing I noticed is that the rear suspension is creaky but only intially and then it settles down. Is it a known issue and is there a fix?

Thanks in advance

This is a well talked about problem on the front, but not sure about the rear.

I sprayed up all my joints front and rear the other weekend, I did have front end noises prior to this.

Now I have nothing!

There are threads in here about it.

My Octavia`s suspension was creaking a couple of years ago and just got greased up at a service and was fine. Seems to have a tendency to dry out.

I was towing a caravan with a Yeti not far past Bristol on the M5 everything started to squeak and groan. It was extremely Hot.

I came off the motorway and sprayed every suspension rubber I could reach with silicone lube and restarted my journey.

Lovely and quiet except for the tow hitch which still squealed, arriving on site it was so loud I had to wet the friction pads with water.

I had a similar problem with a car which had nylon steering bushes, these needed wetting ocassionally to stop the squeak and squeal.

There is nothing to dry out,  greasing of vehicle suspension articulated joints became obsolete 100 years ago with the advent of Silentbloc bushes and greasing of swivel joints over 50 years ago with the introduction of sealed for life ball joints.

Anyone that greases a rubber to metal bonded bush is at best a bodger, at worst risks causing premature failure of the joint.

If they are creaking then they have failed or failing and allowing metal to metal contact and they should be replaced

Some VAG front suspension bushes (console bushes?) weaken very quickly allowing metal to metal contact under certain conditions, slathering them with grease is not the answer, I don't care that a TPI exists telling the dealers to do exactly that, it simply shows how desperate they are, their complete lack of morals (Dieselgate anyone) and sadly that they have the measure of the the gullibility of many owners.

There is a reason that the name Silentbloc was chosen.

As far as you might be right, my car just passed it's MOT, so there's no wobbly bits and I'm no going to spend hundreds of pounds changing bits, if I can squirt a bit of grease on it.

Yep, the big rear rubber bushes (torsion beam suspension) can dry out and make creaking noises. The noise is very similar to the well known front bushing noise. I had this with my previous O3. Dealer lubricated them during service and the ugly noise disappeared.
