Isn't the 1.4 VRS a Fabia MK2? You've posted in the Fabia MK3 section.

The smallest you might want to go on a Mk2 Fabia vRS will likely be 15" and that is the size the Skoda Spare wheel is.

 

The standard 17" Gigaro alloys are fitted with 205/40 R 17 tyres.

15" is the smallest that will fit over 288mm brakes.

195/55R15 would be a good winter tyre size for the Fabia MK2 VRS if you don't use snow chains.

 

Suitable rim sizes include 6Jx15 ET43 (standard Fabia MK2 rim size), 6Jx15 ET38, 6Jx15 ET35, 6.5Jx15 ET34. Perhaps even 5.5Jx15 ET40 or 5.5Jx15 ET34 if you like narrow 5.5J rims with the 195/55R15 tyre size. It's more common to fit 195/55 to wider 6J or 6.5J rims.

 

The 195/55R15 tyre size will better fill the wheelarches when used with ET38, ET35, and ET34 offsets compared to the rather recessed standard ET43 offset. 

 

As you can see in the chart below, 195/55 can be fitted to a rim between 5.5J and 7J with 6J highlighted in bold as that's a good starting point if you're not sure what rim width you want. However, fitting a 195/55 tyre to a 6.5J rim will give slightly sharper steering at the expense of a slight reduction in ride comfort compared to fitting the 195/55 tyre to a 6J rim. For example, the Renault Zoe electric car fits its 195/55 tyre size to a 6.5J rim.

@Carlston  Sometime go drive a Mk2 vRS on 195/55 R 15 tyres without changing the Steering Assist setting, (reducing it)  then tell us about the sharper steering or actually the crap steering and the flashing TC light as well unless they are nice grippy tyres on a grippy road surface.

I think he's referencing the same tyre size on a different sized rim , not comparing 195/55 15 inch wheels and tyres to standard Mk2 vrs wheels.

Good.   205 tyres are fine as summer or winter tyres on 17" or just 16", and 215's are fine. 195 on 17,16 or 15 is just not necessary. 

This is a vRS / DSG i mean with 180 ps.  Not generally Mk2 Fabias.  Lots of days and miles driven in the UK October to April  are lovely dry and warm days.

I ran 195/50 16s last winter and it was comical at times. Wheelspin in third on my 140hp tdi

Was great when it was icy and the council didn't salt the roads, but under those conditions everyone else is driving that slow, having winter tyres didn't make a bit of difference.

Nice to have them but this year I'll not bother swapping unless it gets very bad.

In slippery winter conditions while driving a lightweight 180PS FWD car you won't always be able to plant your right foot whatever tyres you fit.

 

What spare tyre size will fit in the spare wheel well of a Fabia MK2? I'm guessing 185/55R15 fitted to a 6Jx15 ET43 will fit, but anything wider?

 

Actual width of tyre when inflated (measured from sidewall to sidewall)

185/55R15 fitted to 6J rim 194mm

195/55R15 fitted to 5.5J rim about 195mm

 

As you can see in the above chart, a 195/55R15 tyre fitted to a 5.5J rim is about the same width as a 185/55R15 tyre fitted to a 6J rim.

 

This means that if a 185/55R15 tyre fitted to a 6J rim fits in the spare wheel well, then a 195/55R15 tyre fitted to a 5.5J rim will also fit in the spare wheel well.

Winter is not slippery that much for long in much of the UK though.  

There are all the lovely days and nights. 

 

@Carlston  where is it you live and drive and do you still have a Fabia Mk1 Estate? 

 

A Mk2 Fabia vRS comes with a 195/55 R 15 spare tyre in the UK. 

 

A 215/40 R 17 or a 205/45 R 17 fits in the spare tyre well just fine.

It sounds like you are describing stretching the same size tyre on a wider rim, which would probably make it feel "sharper", but I personally wouldn't have stretched tyres on a set of rims especially winters. 

Why? Having a bit of extra tyre gives some rim protection and a bit more comfort. Winter tends to create a lot of potholes, and a bit of extra tyre is very helpful in that case also.

 

I know for a fact that a standard 17" Monte wheel with 215/40 tyres, and a Standard Mk1 vRS 16" wheel with 195/50 tyres will fit into the spare wheel well of a Mk2.

Unless winters are very bad where you are, maybe consider Michelin CrossClimate? Excellent all-rounder for typical winter conditions on these islands.

I'm changing mine soon to the smaller MK3 Fabia alloy with 215/45/R16 with uniroyals, using as all rounder tyres, has anyone tried this is it straight swap in the garage?

Should be a straight swap, used a comparison website and the outer diameter looks to be basically the same as 215/40 17 which I'm running at the minute with no issue.
