Oil Consumption on a 1.8 TSI Octavia

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

Hopefully asked this under the right section of the forum, apologies if not.

I recently bought a 2010 Skoda Octavia 1.8 TSI from a motor trader with 3 previous owners. There was a full service history with the vehicle and it seemed to be well looked after. After around a week of driving the oil light came on (during this week I would say I covered around 70/80 miles). Initially I thought perhaps the levels were low when I bought the car so I tried not to be pessimistic. Fast forward 3 weeks and I have put a total of 2.5 litres of oil into the car as the oil light has come on twice.

I asked a local mechanic about it and he believed the turbo was burning oil, so I contacted a turbo specialist who believed that more likely it was an internal engine issue separate from the turbo. It has also been suggested that the PCV valve could be a potential cheap fix if that is causing the issue.

I contacted the motor trader who denied any knowledge of the issue and advised he never had to top up the oil outside of services.

Generally I use the car for driving to and from work and the gym which are both around 4 miles from my home.

The car had 71k miles at the time of purchase and I've been using 5W30 Castrol oil, last service was in November where a full oil change and filter replacement was done. Anyone have any similar experiences or advice?

Cheers!

These engines were know to have oil consumption problems. I don’t know the details personally. Hopefully some with more knowledge will help.

Welcome to the forum.

You should read the pinned thread at the top of this section.

This kind of motor trader is only too common.

Cheers for the input folks much appreciated.

You should have handed the car back to the dealer if soon enough because they sold you a bad one and you have consumers rights.

The Dealer needs to get to grips with the vehicles they sell.  Sadly your engine needs a rebuild.

I tried to get in touch this evening with no luck, but that's going to be my next course of action. Unfortunately that's all part of the used car market I suppose. Thanks again though for the input!

Doesn't fix the problem but have you read this thread in the stickies above. Gives you info from 9 years ago until now.

I've seen this scenario on here many many times and the same response from a used dealer who will either fob you off until you give up or explain your only option is the warranty they gave you. If they did.

It is not though. You need to be clued up with the consumer rights. Exactly how long ago did you purchase, is it less than 28 days?

Unfortunately I bought the car on the 5th of July so it's outside of the 28 day window. The seller at this point is taking nothing to do with the issue which I'm sure comes as no surprise in this scenario.

I read that outside of the 28 day window the seller is responsible for the cost of repair which even if true I doubt they would cover without legal action. An expensive lesson to learn on my part I suppose.

I wouldn't give up so easily. It is the selling dealers problem regardless if they realised or not. I'll try to link a thread or two where others have had to fight for the return of vehicle. Truth is they won't be able to repair economically so they have no choice but to refund. At what point did you first raise with them oil level low I.e oil use?

If seller persists in fobbing you off and will not take responsibility,

1 - Keep a record of all correspondence with them.

2 - Check your legal rights under Sale of Goods Act (or whatever the latest iteration is called)

3 - File a case in County Court - this isn't expensive to do.

The chances are that they will see sense when they realise that you are serious, if they don't, they will have to attend a court venue convenient to you - if they fail to appear, you should get an automatic judgement in your favour, if they then refuse to pay, the bailiffs will go in and start seizing 'goods to the value' - with all the disruption to business that will ensue from this.

Unfortunately, all this can take some considerable time.

^^^ The system is much the same just in Northern Ireland and not England.  The websites are good showing what is what.

Best of luck. Fingers 🤞.  Do post if we can help further. Don't get riled or angry. It is not your fault. This is the most recent thread I could think of. It's the 2.0tsi version but the issues are the same. Ea888 gen 2 engine. Just capacity is different.
