Loosing coolant

If it's not leaking from a hose, and visible on the ground under the car (but beware confusion with the water that drips from the aircon after use in hot temperatures), then it could be a failed gasket with the coolant leaking into the cylinders (expensive!!) How much coolant are you losing?

Chris

I had a warning light come on when I checked it it was just passed minimum, refilled it but only drove it for a couple of day then went away for a week when I checked it again dropped just passed minimum

@ShuttlebasherHow much coolant?

Was it at MAX at some point, or between MAX & MIN, and where is it now showing?

Have you had a low coolant warning?

It was at max when on a long journey on the way back I had the warning light come on then it was past Minimum

Well yes the warning light should come on at or just under minimum. I think what others are asking is have you had fluctuations in coolant level (between max/min) when you routinely check your engine fluid levels. If it is a failed head gasket then it could be pressurising your coolant system, rather than just losing coolant.
Rather less severely it could be a leaking/cracked thermostat or  thermostat gasket. I had that on a tdi once and it only leaked as the engine was warming up, once at normal temp it didn’t leak at all, so could take several journeys to bring the coolant down below minimum.

Whatever it is good luck.

A failed head gasket used to be the go to for causing a panic.

Not the usual go to guess these days.

So much more before that becomes the thing to consider.  Just because the coolant leak is not obvious at first it can be a water pump,

a Radiator leak / damage, pipe / hose, reservoir / bottle leak. These are why you are going to a Tech / Mechanic for them to diagnose.

Thanks yes  will book it in

We had a Fabia years ago which needed regular topping up. No sign of a leak. It was weeping out of the seal around the temp sensor onto the radiator only when hot and instantly vaporised. Took six years to track it down in end!

Just had another look and found some water by the drive belt so I am suspecting the water pump, maybe wrong  awful if it is as it’s only done 23,000 miles and always service at Skoda, could be just a gasket but still be the same labour cost just waiting for Skoda to see if they can fit me in going away on Monday typical

This is the thing with engines, particularly VW engines and it can take years before you know how they will be for reliability of parts.

VW have had them out for 6 years so time will tell if they got water pumps right this time. There has been decades since they changed from air cooled with them not managing to source good ones.

There can always be premature failures.  We learn how few as the years pass.

Classic (meaning old fashioned) indicator for a blown head gasket is to take off the oil filler cap and see if you can see anything looking like mayonnaise inside.

if you do then it's an urgent visit to the dealer.

I had this on my 2016 2.0TSi Superb a while ago at 52k miles. Slow water leak & low coolant warning turned out to be a water pump / thermostat issue. Not cheap. £734.26 + VAT to supply & fit a new pump & thermostat by an independent VAG specialist garage. Rear discs & pads also needed at the same time. Total bill £1,265.11☹️ including an annual service for what started out as an "interim service message". God knows what the price would have been at a main dealer.
